The effect of metal work function on the barrier height of metal/CdS/SnO2/In–Ga structures

        Ilke Taşçıoğlu,S¸ emsettin Altındal,İsmail Polat,Emin Bacaksız 한국물리학회 2013 Current Applied Physics Vol.13 No.7

In order to interpret the effect of metal work function on the formation of the barrier height at metal/semiconductor (M/S) interface, the CdS/SnO2/IneGa structures with several metals (Ag, Au, Al, Te) have been investigated by using IeV characteristics at room temperature. The main electrical parameters such as ideality factor (n), zero-bias barrier height (FBo), series resistance (Rs) have been determined and compared with each other. The values of n were found to be 3.00, 2.56, 3.83, and 3.31 for Al, Ag, Te, and Au/CdS/SnO2/IneGa structures, respectively. The values of FBo were also found to be 0.489 eV, 0.490 eV,0.583 eV, 0.591 eV for Al, Ag, Te, and Au/CdS/SnO2/IneGa structures, respectively. The FBo dependence on the metal work function (Fm) was found to vary almost linearly as FBo = 0.106Fm þ 0.028. The low value of the slope S (dFB/dFM y 0.106) shows a weak relationship between FBo and Fm due to serious Fermilevel pinning in the conduction band. In addition, the IeV plots have a rectifying behavior. The rectification ratio, defined by the ratio of forward to reverse current (RR = IF/IR) measured at the same absolute bias, was found as 11.96, 20.88, 35.82, and 75.61 for Al, Ag, Te, Au/CdS/SnO2/IneGa diodes, respectively. In addition, the values of Rs were determined from Ohm’s Law and Norde’s method. Analysis of IeV characteristics confirm that using of different metal (Al, Ag, Te, Au) has significant effect on electrical parameters of such devices.

Use of sugammadex in Rett syndrome: A case report

Kupeli, Ilke,Tepe, Emine,Kuyrukluyildiz, Ufuk The Korean Dental Society of Anesthsiology 2018 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.18 No.4

Rett syndrome (RS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by loss of cognitive, motor, and social skills, epilepsy, autistic behavior, abnormal airway patterns, gastroesophageal reflux, nutritional problems, and severe scoliosis. Although girls with RS show normal or near-normal growth until 6-8 months, they lose their skills after that. The anesthetic management of these patients requires care because of all these clinical features. Especially in the postoperative period, prolonged apnea is common and extubation is delayed. In this case report, the effect of using sugammadex was presented in a 16-year-old girl with RS. The patient's all bimaxillary teeth and 4 wisdom teeth were extracted under general anesthesia in one session with minimal surgical trauma and moderate bleeding. Sugammadex can be a rapid and reliable agent for the reversal of the neuromuscular block in neurodegenerative patients.

Lacticaseibacillus casei AMBR2 Restores Airway Epithelial Integrity in Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps

        Martens Katleen,De Boeck Ilke,Jokicevic Katarina,Kiekens Filip,Farré Ricard,Vanderveken Olivier M.,Seys Sven F.,Lebeer Sarah,Hellings Peter W.,Steelant Brecht 대한천식알레르기학회 2021 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.13 No.4

Purpose A defective epithelial barrier has been demonstrated in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Lactobacilli are shown to restore epithelial barrier defects in gastrointestinal disorders, but their effect on the airway epithelial barrier is unknown. In this study, hence, we evaluated whether the nasopharyngeal isolates Lacticaseibacillus casei AMBR2 and Latilactobacillus sakei AMBR8 could restore nasal epithelial barrier integrity in CRSwNP. Methods Ex vivo trans-epithelial tissue resistance and fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran 4 kDa (FD4) permeability of nasal mucosal explants were measured. The relative abundance of lactobacilli in the maxillary sinus of CRSwNP patients was analyzed by amplicon sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. The effect of spray-dried L. casei AMBR2 and L. sakei AMBR8 on epithelial integrity was investigated in vitro in primary nasal epithelial cells (pNECs) from healthy controls and patients with CRSwNP as well as in vivo in a murine model of interleukin (IL)-4 induced barrier dysfunction. The activation of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) was explored in vitro by using polyclonal antibodies. Results Patients with CRSwNP had a defective epithelial barrier which positively correlated with the relative abundance of lactobacilli-specific amplicons in the maxillary sinus. L. casei AMBR2, but not L. sakei AMBR8, increased the trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TEER) of pNECs from CRSwNP patients in a time-dependent manner. Treatment of epithelial cells with L. casei AMBR2 promoted the tight junction proteins occludin and zonula occludens-1 reorganization. Furthermore, L. casei AMBR2 prevented IL-4-induced nasal permeability in vivo and in vitro. Finally, the beneficial effect of L. casei AMBR2 on nasal epithelial cells in vitro was TLR2-dependent as blocking TLR2 receptors prevented the increase in TEER. Conclusions A defective epithelial barrier in CRSwNP may be associated with a decrease in relative abundance of lactobacilli-specific amplicons. L. casei AMBR2 would restore nasal epithelial integrity and can be a novel therapeutic strategy for CRSwNP.

Effect of preemptive intravenous ibuprofen on postoperative edema and trismus in third molar tooth extraction: A randomized controlled study

Gulnahar, Yakup,Kupeli, Ilke The Korean Dental Society of Anesthsiology 2018 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.18 No.3

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory efficacy of preemptive intravenous ibuprofen on inflammatory complications such as edema and trismus in patients undergoing impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Methods: Sixty patients were included and divided into three groups (800 mg IV ibuprofen + 50 mg dexketoprofen, 800 mg IV ibuprofen, and control). In all patients, preoperative hemodynamic values were recorded before the infusions. The operation was started at 15-min post-infusion. Evaluation of edema size on the face and mouth opening (trismus) was conducted in the preoperative period, and at postoperative 48 h and 1 week. Results: No difference was determined among the groups in trismus and edema size in postoperative measurements (P > 0.05). There was a difference between group 2 and group 3 only in measurement value of tragus-corner of the mouth on the postoperative day 2 (P < 0.05). A difference was found between the measurement values of trismus preoperatively and at preoperative day 2, and between postoperative day 2 and 1 week in group 3 based on time (P < 0.05). In group 3, edema on the face on postoperative day 2 increased significantly compared to that in the preoperative period (P < 0.001); in addition, edema increased significantly in groups 1 and 2 in the postoperative period but was less than that in group 3 (P < 0.001). Conclusions: In this study, intravenous ibuprofen was determined to be more effective alone or in combination in alleviating trismus and to better limit the postoperative edema.

Evaluation of the Effects of the Flavonoid Apigenin on Apoptotic Pathway Gene Expression on the Colon Cancer Cell Line (HT29)

        Mehmet Turktekin,Ece Konac,H. Ilke Onen,Ebru Alp,Akin Yilmaz,Sevda Menevse 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.10

Apigenin (4′,5,7-trihydroxyflavone) is one of the leading components supporting targeted treatment options. We explored the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of various doses of apigenin administered alone and together with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)—a chemotherapeutic agent with high cytotoxicity—for different incubation periods, on morphologic, DNA, RNA (messenger RNA [mRNA]), and protein levels on the p53 mutant HT29 human colon adenocarcinoma cell line. Treatment with apigenin alone for a 72-hour incubation at 90-μM dose resulted in an apoptotic percentage of 24.92% (P=.001). A higher percentage (29.13%) was observed after treatment with the same dose of apigenin plus 5-FU for the same incubation period (P=.001). These results were confirmed as mRNA and protein expression levels of caspase-3 increased 2.567-fold and mRNA expression levels of caspase-8 increased 3.689-fold compared with the control group. On the other hand, mRNA expression levels of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and cyclin D1 (CCND1) decreased by 0.423-fold and 0.231-fold, respectively. To our knowledge this is the first study showing that treatment with apigenin alone results in cell cycle arrest through activation of caspase cascade and stimulation of apoptosis in HT29 cells. It also shows that use of apigenin plus 5-FU further increases this effect. This study draws attention to the probable clinical effectiveness of apigenin plus a chemotherapeutic agent with high cytotoxicity. It also highlights the induction of desirable apoptotic effects by targeting the caspase cascade pathway through administration of reduced doses for shorter incubation periods.

Vol.1 No.1

We performed a variety of lymphocyte stimulation tests, delayed hypersensitivity skin tests, and enumeration of several lymphocyte subpopulations in 21 patients with gastric cancer who did not receive any form of anticancer therapy, and in 20 healthy controls. The gastric cancer patients had significantly decreased number and total score of positive reactions in delayed hypersensitivity skin tests compared with the healthy controls. The percent of CD_(4) positive lymphocytes in the gastric cancer patients was significantly decreased compared to the normal control subjects, but it had no correlation with the total score of delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions. The ratio of helper to suppressor cells was lower in the cancer group. The uptake of 3H-thymidine was markedly depressed in cancer patients when stimulated with various mitogens. There was little correlation between any of the stimulation tests and any of the lymphocyte subpopulation proportions to delayed hypersensitivity cutaneous reactions. Optimal proliferative response was found in lymphocytes stimulated with 10 micrograms of concanavalin-A and 10 microgram of phytohemagglutinin. Advanced stage patients had greatly depressed delayed hypersensitivity skin reactions and proliferative responses to mitogens compared with localized diseases. These results suggest that gastric cancer patients have depressed cellular immune functions, which mainly result from the decreased helper cells and defects in functional proliferative response to mitogens. Interleukin-2 and interferon-gamma restored the in vitro proliferative response of lymphocyte in patients with gastric cancer.
