        The concepts and the historical research works of cognitive styles were reviewed, particularly on the basis of the relationship between cognitive styles and vocational interests/choices. As a general principle, relatively field-independent persons, taken as a group, are likely to show interest in domains where their cognitive skill competence in articulation or in analysis, and structuring are called for and where relations with people are not particularly involved. In contrast, relatively field-dependent persons, as a group, are likely to favor domains with a "people" emphasis-that is, which feature social content and which involve interpersonal relations in daily ongoing activities and for which analytical/structuring competence does not particularly matter. Group Embedded Figure Tests were administered to examine any relationship between field-dependence-independence and academic-vocational interests/choices among Korean college and high school students. The Ss were 205 college students and 121 high school students. However, no significant relations were observed between cognitive styles and academic vocational interests/choices. Further research on this problem with more large sample size is required.

        Background: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a promising novel technique for the ablation of tumors. IRE has an advantage over other ablation technique in its mechanism to remove undesired cells by affecting the cell membrane without thermally destructing blood vessels, nerves and the surrounding tissues. This therapeutic modality has been considered to apply to Barrett`s dysplasia or epithelial neoplasm of upper gastrointestinal tract instead of previous radiofrequency ablation. Our purpose was to study effectiveness of IRE according to tissue properties in rat stomach. Methods: The Sprague-Dawley rats were used throughout this study. IRE ablation was applied in upper stomach (squamous cell epithelium) and lower stomach (columnar cell epithelium) with same energy parameters. The energy delivered for each ablation was 50/100 pulses of 1KV/cm ~ 3KV/cm. And we used DNA microarrays to measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes in rat stomach according to different electrical energy. And we measured several apoptotic gene expression using real time RT-PCR. Results: All animals survived for their designated times. H-E staining showed extensive cell death area at 10 hours after IRE ablation in upper (squamous cell epithelium) and lower (columnar cell epithelium) gastric tissue. We confi rmed apoptotic cell death by Tunnel assay. The number of signifi cantly up-regulated apoptotic genes was higher in 2KV, 100 pulse and 10hr than that of other electrical energy groups. The signifi cantly up-regulated genes related to apoptosis after IRE ablation in all IRE setting were s100a8/9, Ccl2, Timp1. Aif1, Lcn2, hspb1 genes. Conclusions: This study showed that IRE ablated stomach tissue through cellular apoptosis. This study suggests the potentiality of IRE application in the treatment of not only gastric neoplasm but also esophageal neoplasm including dysplasia of Barrett`s esophagus without metastasis.

        Expression Patterns of Ki-67, Cyclin A, and Cyclin D1 during Tooth Development

        치아발생 및 형태형성 과정에서 치아상피와 치아간엽을 구성하는 세포는 동적인 세포주기의 변화가 일어난다. 현재까지 세포증식은 치아발생에 중요한 현상으로 알려져 있지만, 치아발생 중에 일어나는 복잡한 분자적 기전과 연관해서 세포주기의 각 시기가 어떻게 관여하는지에 대해서는 충분한 연구가 이루어지지 않았다. 그러므로 본 연구는 치아발생 기전과 세포주기의 시기의 변화와의 관계를 밝히고자 하였다. 치아발생 과정에서 일어나는 형태변화를 확인하기 위해 싹시기, 모자시기, 종시기의 쥐 앞니 및 어금니 치배를 헤마톡실린-에오신으로 염색하여 조직학적으로 관찰하였다. 또한 세포주기 시기의 표지자인 Ki-67, 싸이클린 A, 싸이클린 D1의 발현양상을 관찰하기 위해 면역조직화학염색을 시행하였다. 싹시기, 모자시기, 종시기에서 증식하는 세포들은 Ki-67과 싸이클린 A를 발현하는 것을 확인하였다. 싸이클린 D1은 앞니의 상아질모세포 및 모자시기의 사기질결절에서 특이적인 발현을 보였으며, 이곳에서는 Ki-67이나 싸이클린 A가 발현되지 않는다는 것을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 치아발생 중 각 주요 시기에서 세포주기의 변화를 관찰하였으며, 이는 치아발생에 관여하는 기전에 대한 중요한 정보를 제공한다. 또한 본 연구의 결과는 지금까지의 앞니의 사기질모세포 및 사기질결절의 특성에 대한 지식을 이해하는 데에 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 사료된다. Dental epithelial and mesenchymal cells that form the teeth undergo dynamic changes in cell cycle during tooth development and morphogenesis. Although proliferation has been known as a key event during odontogenesis, the cell cycle phases and their relations with the complicated molecular mechanisms of tooth development are not fully understood yet. This study comparatively examined the expression patterns of Ki-67, cyclin A, and cyclin D1 during tooth development in the mouse incisor and molar in order to identify the cellcycle characteristics during odontogenesis. We found that Ki-67 and cyclin A were expressed in the proliferating cells in the dental epithelial and mesenchymal tissues at the bud, cap and bell stages. Cycln D1 showed distinct expression in the incisor odontoblast region and the enamel knot, in which Ki-67 nor cyclin A was expressed. Our results provide specific information on the cell cycle phases during tooth development that may provide clues to relate them with the complex odontogenic mechanisms. Furthermore, we suggest that our findings enlightened the previous studies on the incisor odontoblasts and the enamel knot during tooth development.

      • 위암종에서 Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor(VEGF)와 Ki-67에 관한 연구

        혈관 형성이 종양의 성장, 진행에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것이 알려져 있다. 저자들은 혈관 형성성 인자인 Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)의 발현과 위암종의 진행 및 핵 증식인자인 Ki-67과의 관계를 조사하여 VEGF 발현은 위암종의 진행과 관련이 있어 예후 인자로서 가치가 있으나, 종양세포의 악성도 표지자는 아니라는 결론을 얻었다. Many studies have shown that angiogenesis plays an important role in the growth, progression and metastasis of malignant tumors. Recently, several angiogenic factors have been identified. VEGF is thought to be a angiogenic factor and is also thought to be a selective mitogen for endothelial cells. The author investigated the correlation between the expression of VEGF and the progression of gastric carcinoma, and between expression of VEGF and index of Ki-67 of gastric carcinoma. The specimens used in this study were 98 cases of gastric carcinoma diagnosed during from 1995 to 1997 at surgical pathology section of Pusan National University Hospital. These specimens were investigated by staining with polyclonal antibody against the VEGF and a monoclonal antibody against the Ki-67. The expression of VEGF was not correlated with type of gastric carcinoma according to Lauren's classification, and not correlated with degree of differentiation of tumor cells. The expression of VEGF was significantly higher in advanced gastric carcinoma than in early gastric carcinoma. The expression of VEGF was not related with index of Ki-67. These findings suggested that expression of VEGF may be a good prognostic indicator for patient with gastric carcinoma but suggested that it may not be an indicator of tumor cell differentiation.

        Design of Autonomous Cruise Controller with Linear Time Varying Model

        Cruise control is a technology for automatically maintaining a steady speed of vehicle as set by the driver via controlling throttle valve and brake of vehicle. In this paper we investigate cruise controller design method with consideration for distance to vehicle ahead. We employ linear time varying (LTV) model to describe longitudinal vehicle dynamic motion. With this LTV system we approximately model the nonlinear dynamics of vehicle speed by frequent update of the system parameters. In addition we reformulate the LTV system by transforming distance to leading vehicle into variation of system parameters of the model. Note that in conventional control problem formulation this distance is considered as disturbance which should be rejected. Consequently a controller can be designed by pole placement at each instance of parameter update, based on the linear model with the present system parameters. The validity of this design method is examined by simulation study.

        Heteromaterial gate tunneling field-effect transistor for high-speed and radio-frequency applications.

        <P>We propose a tunneling field-effect transistor (TFET) with a heteromaterial (HM)-gate not only for low standby power (LSTP) applications, which TFETs are genuinely suitable for, but also for high-speed performance by properly adjusting intrinsic gate capacitance (C(gg)). As a result of simulations in this work, the HM-gate TFET showed better subthreshold characteristics (smaller S) at an appropriate threshold voltage (V(th)) for LSTP applications, enhancing tunneling probability by modulating the difference in the metal workfunction (φ(m)) between the source-side gate (S-gate) and the drain-side gate (D-gate). Further, the C(gg) of HM-gate TFET were extracted and compared against that of conventional TFETs having gates with various φ(m)'s. Since lower C(gg) can be formed by high φ(m) in the D-gate, the HM-gate TFET has an excellent cut-off frequency (f(T)) and intrinsic delay time (τ) associated with the C(gg). We confirmed that the HM-gate TFET proposed in this work achieves superb performance for LSTP applications as well as high-frequency operations.</P>

        Effect of spacer dielectrics on performance characteristics of Ge-based tunneling field-effect transistors

        <P>In this study, we investigated the effects of dielectric materials for spacers on the performance characteristics of germanium (Ge)-based tunneling field-effect transistors (TFETs). Direct current (DC), radio frequency (RF), and switching performance characteristics were analyzed using various spacer dielectric materials including recent interlayer dielectric (ILD) oxides, silicon dioxide (SiO2), silicon nitride (Si3N4), and hafnium oxide (HfO2). Since spacer dielectrics affect the band bending in the source and drain regions caused by fringing fields, a Ge-based TFET having a low-kappa. spacer dielectric showed a high current drivability owing to its steep energy-band bending on the source side. At the same time, outstanding switching and RF performance characteristics were achieved by reducing parasitic capacitances when a low-. spacer dielectric was employed. On this basis, a Ge-based TFET with a low-. spacer dielectric was designed with a drain underlap for satisfactory control of the ambipolar behaviors and for optimization of RF performance characteristics. It was proven that the drain underlap suppressed ambipolar current characteristics and reduced gate capacitance by minimizing the electric field induced by the gate electrode on the drain-side channel without degradation of current drivability.
