The cellulase of verticillium sp. was purified to investigate its some properties. The enzyme purification was carried out by ammonium sulfate fractionation, and column chromatography of Sephadex G-50, G-100 and DEAE Sephadex A-25, with its specific activity increased to 17 fold. The molecular weight was estimated to be 46,000 by gel filtration. The optimum pH and temperature were pH 7 and 50℃, respectively. The enzyme was stable over the range of pH5-7 at 50℃ for 1 hour. But half of its activity was lost after 2 hour. The km value was calculated to be 1.2mg of CMC/㎖.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of the meridian muscle release technique on the pain and functional movement of patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) of the shoulder joint. METHODS: The subjects of this study included 45 patients with MPS of the shoulder joint. The subjects were divided randomly into the following groups; the meridian muscle release technique group (n=15), the Graston technique group (n=15), and the control group (n=15). Both the meridian muscle release group and the Graston technique group received conventional therapy for 35 minutes initially and were then treated using the meridian muscle releases technique and Graston technique for 10 minutes, respectively. The control group received only conventional therapy for 35 minutes. All three groups underwent treatments three times a week for four weeks. Each subject was evaluated randomly using the VAS, PPT, SPADI and ROM both before and after treatment. RESULTS: The Graston technique group showed a significantly more substantial increase in functional movement (p<.05) than the meridian muscle release technique and control groups. The meridian muscle release technique group had significantly less pain (p<.05) compared to the Graston technique and control groups. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the meridian muscle release technique can be useful for decreasing pain and increasing the functional movement of patients with MPS of the shoulder joint.

This paper investigates the relationship between acoustic characteristics and voice handicap index for 29 males with esophageal speakers. Acoustic characteristics were measured by using a sustained vowel /a/ three times. The stable vocalization for 2 seconds was analyzed by MDVP program. Specifically, relationships between four VHI scores (total, functional, physical, and emotional) and three acoustic characteristics (jitter, shimmer, and NHR) were investigated using the Pearson correlation coefficient. As results, we found no relationship between NHR and VHI scores. However, both jitter and shimmer had statistically significant correlations with all four VHI scores. This research will contribute to establishing a baseline related to speech characteristics in voice rehabilitation with esophageal speakers. Further research could be done to examine the overall quality of life survey, which is widely used as a subjective measure about voice for patients with esophageal speakers.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the acoustic characteristics of crying infants according to the communication intents such as hunger and pain in terms of acoustic differences in the fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonic ratio(NHR), habitual pitch, and intensity. The subjects were 20 healthy, normal infants, less than seven days old, from the city of Seoul and were born after 38 to 42 weeks(full term) of pregnancy. The sound of crying was recorded for three minutes. The crying due to pain was induced by means of the inborn metabolism error test, whereas the crying due to hunger was verified by means of the rooting reflex by waiting for the designated eating time. The results were as follows: (1) the fundamental frequency, noise-to-harmonic ratio(NHR), and intensity of the infants’ crying due to pain was higher than that by hunger, showing a significant difference between the mean values. (2) the infants’ crying due to hunger and that by pain did not have a significant difference in the mean jitter and shimmer values but both of them were largely outside of the normal threshold values(jitter by 1.04% and shimmer by 3.81%). This study was significant in the sense that it showed the acoustic characteristics of infants’ crying from hunger and pain were very different from each other according to the communication intents in terms of the six acoustic parameters.

This research is aimed at finding the acoustic characteristics of different voice rehabilitation techniques, the electrolaryx (EL), standard esophageal (SE), and tracheoesophageal (TE), used on 17 patients with laryngectomees. The analysis of the voice qualities was achieved using MDVP. In order to compare the acoustic characteristics, patients were asked to produce the vowel /a/ sound. The acoustic analysis included fundamental frequency (f0), jitter, shimmer, and noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR). The main acoustic results showed no significant statistical differences between the average measurements of SE and TE speakers. It was found that the current study showed the same tendency found in previous studies. There was also a significant difference between SE and EL speakers. On the other hand, there were no significant statistical differences between the average measurements of TE and EL speakers on all acoustic measurements. This research will contribute to establishing a baseline related to speech characteristics in voice rehabilitation for patients with laryngectomees. In future, the present findings and issues should be considered in the context of gender. Specifically, the number of women who are diagnosed with laryngeal cancer continues to rise and their acoustic characteristics may indeed differ from those of men.
Topical Hypopigmenting Agents for Pigmentary Disorders and Their Mechanisms of Action
( Hyo Jin Kim ),( Dong Seok Kim ),( Kyoung Chan Park ),( Hye Ryung Choi ) 대한피부과학회 2012 Annals of Dermatology Vol.24 No.1
Melanin is produced in melanocytes and stored in melanosomes. In spite of its beneficial sun- protective effect, abnormal accumulation of melanin results in esthetic problems. Hydroquinone, competing with tyrosine, is a major ingredient in topical pharmacological agents. However, frequent adverse reactions are amongst its major limitation. To solve this problem, several alternatives such as arbutin, kojic acid, aloesin, and 4-n-butyl resorcinol have been developed. Herein, we classify hypopigmenting agents according to their mechanism of action; a) regulation of enzyme, which is subdivided into three categories, i) regulation of transcription and maturation of tyrosinase, ii) inhibition of tyrosinase activity, and iii) post-transcriptional control of tyrosinase; b) inhibition of melanosome transfer, and c) additional mechanisms such as regulation of the melanocyte environment and antioxidant agents.
Subarray averaging and entropy minimization (SAEM) algorithm is applied to stepped-frequency ISAR autofocus to compensate for the phase error along the down-range due to high target speed and low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of radar systems. In stepped-frequency radar systems, the phase error due to target motion in each burst make range profiles blur. Thus, the stepped-frequency ISAR often adopts a high PRF radar system in order to suppress the effect of target motion in each burst. However, it inevitably leads to loss of many advantages by adopting low PRF radars in stepped-frequency ISAR imaging. In order to take advantage of a low PRF radar in stepped-frequency ISAR imaging, this paper makes use of a method called SAEM (subarray averaging and entropy minimization) that uses a subarray averaging concept in conjunction with the entropy cost function in order to find the target's motion parameters. Well-focused ISAR images also can be provided from the combination of the SAEM and a traditional autofocus algorithm, even when low PRF stepped-frequency waveform is used. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated and analyzed with simulated targets comprised of point scatters and measured Boeing-737 data.
