Vol.39 No.3

This study was intended to devise means to encourage participation for organizations taking part in "resident participation parks.", "Resident participation" has become increasingly recognized as an effective means of park management in Korea. To this end, this study analyzed the current status of social networks for civic organizations participating in park management with respect to their degree of participation, credibility and trust, and exchange of information. Among resident participation parks, "Seoul Forest Park" has been widely recognized as a model example; accordingly this study designated Seoul Forest Park as its primary research focus. Thirty core members of resident participation organizations were selected as test subjects. Members of the resident participation organizations under review came from various backgrounds, including government administrative organizations, citizens' groups, residents' groups, and private businesses. Surveys were used to provide data on credibility and trust between organizations, levels of participation, and exchange of information, as well as statistics on demographic affiliation. Results were examined through UCINET, a program designed to analyze social networks. Survey results indicated that 1) The "Seoul Forest Park Conservancy" and the "Seoul Forest Park Management Office" constituted a hub within their social networks that maintained significantly more relationships than other organizations with regard to levels of credibility and trust, participation, and exchange of information; 2) Social networks for organizations wishing to work together, or desiring active participation in the future tended to center on citizens' organizations in the environmental and arts fields; and 3) Women's associations and meetings of neighborhood("tong") leaders had very little significance as a center in the social networks of local residents groups, and indeed very few connections amongst themselves. The results of this research can be applied in the devising of proposals for encouraging participation in resident participation parks in consideration of the social networks between organizations engaging in park management activities for a diverse array of urban parks and other areas.

        Park*, Eui‐,Chul,Yoon, Jong‐,Bok,Seong*, Jin‐,Sil,Choi, Kyoung‐,Soo,Kong, Eung‐,Sik,Kim, Yun‐,Jeong,Park, Young‐,Mee,Park, Eun‐,Mi Taylor Francis 2006 Preparative biochemistry & biotechnology Vol.36 No.1

<P>Reactive oxygen species (ROS), generated by ionizing radiation, has been implicated in its effect on living tissues. We confirmed the changes in the oxidative stress markers upon irradiation. We characterized the changes in the proteome profile in rat liver after administering irradiation, and the affected proteins were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS and ESI-MS/MS. The identified proteins represent diverse sets of proteins participating in the cellular metabolism. Our results demonstrated that proteomics analysis is a useful method for characterization of a global proteome change caused by ionizing radiation to unravel the molecular mechanisms involved in the cellular responses to ionizing radiation.</P>

Differences in Clinical and Laboratory Findings between Group D and Non-Group D Non-Typhoidal Salmonella Gastroenteritis in Children

        Park, Heung Keun,Rhie, Kyuyol,Yeom, Jung Sook,Park, Ji Sook,Park, Eun Sil,Seo, Ji-Hyun,Lim, Jae Young,Park, Chan-Hoo,Woo, Hyang-Ok,Youn, Hee-Shang,Kang, Ki Ryeon,Park, Jung Je The Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology 2015 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.18 No.2

Purpose: To investigate the differences in clinical features and laboratory findings between group D and non-group D non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) gastroenteritis in children. Methods: A retrospective chart review of children diagnosed with NTS confirmed by culture study was performed. The clinical features and laboratory findings of group D and non-group D NTS were compared. Results: From 2003 to 2012, 75 cases were diagnosed as NTS at our center. The number of group D and non-group D patients was 45 and 30, respectively. The mean age was higher in group D than in non-group D patients (5.1 years vs. 3.4 years, p=0.038). Headaches were more frequently observed (p=0.046) and hematochezia was less frequently observed (p=0.017) in group D than in non-group D NTS gastroenteritis patients. A positive Widal test result was observed in 53.3% of group D and 6.7% of non-group D NTS cases (O-titer, p=0.030; H-titer, p=0.039). There were no differences in white blood cell counts, level of C-reactive protein and rate of antimicrobial resistance between group D and non-group D cases. Conclusion: The more severe clinical features such as headache, fever, and higher Widal titers were found to be indicative of group D NTS gastroenteritis. Additionally, group D NTS gastroenteritis was more commonly found in older patients. Therefore, old age, fever, headache, and a positive Widal test are more indicative of group D NTS than non-group D NTS gastroenteritis. Pathophysiological mechanisms may differ across serologic groups.

Tandem High-Dose Chemotherapy and Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation in Young Children with Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor of the Central Nervous System

Park, Eun Sil,Sung, Ki Woong,Baek, Hee Jo,Park, Kyung Duk,Park, Hyeon Jin,Won, Sung Chul,Lim, Do Hoon,Kim, Heung Sik The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences 2012 JOURNAL OF KOREAN MEDICAL SCIENCE Vol.27 No.2

<P>The feasibility and effectiveness of tandem high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDCT/autoSCT) were evaluated in children younger than 3 yr of age with atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (ATRT). Tandem HDCT/autoSCT was administered following six cycles of induction chemotherapy. Radiotherapy (RT) was administered if the tumor relapsed or progressed, otherwise, it was administered after 3 yr of age. Tumors relapsed or progressed during induction chemotherapy in 5 of 9 patients enrolled; 3 of these 5 received tandem HDCT/autoSCT as a salvage treatment. One patient died from sepsis during induction chemotherapy. The remaining 3 patients proceeded to tandem HDCT/autoSCT; however, 2 of these patients showed tumor relapse/progression after tandem HDCT/autoSCT. All 7 relapses/progressions occurred at primary sites even in patients with leptomeningeal seeding. Toxicities during tandem HDCT/autoSCT were manageable. A total of 5 patients were alive with a median follow-up of 20 (range 16-70) months from diagnosis. Four of 5 patients who received RT after relapse/progression are alive. The probability of overall survival at 3 yr from diagnosis was 53.3% ± 17.3%. Our tandem HDCT/autoSCT is feasible; however, early administration of RT prior to tandem HDCT/autoSCT should be considered to improve the outcome after tandem HDCT/autoSCT.</P>

JAK2-STAT3 Blockade by AG490 Suppresses Autoimmune Arthritis in Mice via Reciprocal Regulation of Regulatory T Cells and Th17 Cells

        Park, Jin-Sil,Lee, Jennifer,Lim, Mi-Ae,Kim, Eun-Kyung,Kim, Sung-Min,Ryu, Jun-Geol,Lee, Jae Ho,Kwok, Seung-Ki,Park, Kyung-Su,Kim, Ho-Youn,Park, Sung-Hwan,Cho, Mi-La American Association of Immunologists 2014 Journal of Immunology Vol. No.

<P>IL-6–mediated STAT3 signaling is essential for Th17 differentiation and plays a central role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the antirheumatic effects and T cell regulatory effects of STAT3 inhibition, we studied the effects of the JAK 2 inhibitor AG490 on Th17 cell/regulatory T cell (Treg) balance and osteoclastogenesis. AG490 was administered to mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) via i.p. injection, and its in vivo effects were determined. Differential expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-17A, IL-1β, and IL-6, was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Levels of phosphorylated STAT3 and STAT5 and differentiation of Th17 cells and Tregs after AG490 treatment in our CIA model were analyzed by immunostaining. In vitro development of Th17 cells and Tregs was analyzed by flow cytometry and real-time PCR. AG490 ameliorated the arthritic phenotype in CIA and increased the proportion of Foxp3+ Tregs. In contrast, the proportion of IL-17A–producing T cells and levels of inflammatory markers were reduced in AG490-treated mice. Numbers of p-STAT3+ CD4+ T cells and p-STAT5+ CD4+ T cells were reduced and elevated, respectively, after treatment with AG490. Furthermore, AG490 markedly increased the expression of molecules associated with Treg development (ICOS, programmed cell death protein 1, ICAM-1, and CD103). The development and function of osteoclasts were suppressed by AG490 treatment. Our results suggest that AG490, specifically regulating the JAK2/STAT3 pathway, may be a promising treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.</P>
