<P>There is a recent interest in semiconducting superlattice films because their low dimensionality can increase the thermal power and phonon scattering at the interface in superlattice films. However, experimental studies in all cross-plane thermoelectric (TE) properties, including thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and electrical conductivity, have not been performed from these semiconducting superlattice films because of substantial difficulties in the direct measurement of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Unlike the conventional measurement method, we present a technique using a structure of sandwiched superlattice films between two embedded heaters as the heating source, and electrodes with two Cu plates, which directly enables the investigation of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity across the Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>/ZnO superlattice films, prepared by the atomic layer deposition method. Used in combination with the promising cross-plane four-point probe 3-ω method, our measurements and analysis demonstrate all cross-plane TE properties of Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>/ZnO superlattice films in the temperature range of 80 to 500 K. Our experimental methodology and the obtained results represent a significant advancement in the understanding of phonons and electrical transports in nanostructured materials, especially in semiconducting superlattice films in various temperature ranges.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

<P>Abstract</P><P><I>Objective:</I> The anti-epidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibody cetuximab has been shown to be effective in patients with wild-type<I> KRAS</I> metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Fragment C γ receptor <I>(Fc</I>γ<I>R)</I> polymorphisms may predict the effectiveness of cetuximab, but this has not been established. This study investigated the clinical relevance of <I>Fc</I>γ<I>R</I> gene polymorphisms and <I>KRAS</I> status in iri-notecan-refractory mCRC patients treated with cetuximab. <I>Methods:</I> The total number of irinotecan-refractory mCRC patients studied was 118. Among them, 117 and 107 patients were screened for <I>KRAS</I> mutations and genetic polymorphisms of <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIa-131H/R</I> and <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIIa-158V/F</I>, respectively. The association of <I>Fc</I>γ<I>R </I>polymorphisms and<I> KRAS </I>mutations with clinical outcome was analyzed. <I>Results:</I><I>KRAS</I> mutations were found in 33 patients (27.1%). Wild-type <I>KRAS</I> was associated with a better response rate (p < 0.001), longer progression-free survival (p < 0.001) and longer overall survival (p < 0.001). <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIa H/H, H/R </I>and<I> R/R </I>polymorphisms were observed in 54, 49 and 4 patients, respectively, and <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIIa V/V, V/F </I>and <I>F/F </I>polymorphisms were observed in 6, 65, and 36 patients, respectively. Clinical outcomes were not significantly associated with either <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIa</I> or <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIIa</I> polymorphisms or with combinations of <I>KRAS </I>status and <I>Fc</I>γ<I>R </I>polymorphisms. <I>Conclusion:</I> The <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIa</I> and <I>Fc</I>γ<I>RIIIa</I> polymorphisms may not be useful molecular biomarkers for the activity of cetuximab in patients with mCRC.</P><P>Copyright © 2012 S. Background/Aims: Thrombocytopenia is frequently found in patients with chronic liver disease. The mechanism of thrombocytopenia has been attributed to hypersplenism. Recently, several reports have shown that platelet associated IgG (PA-IgG), which has been thought to be closely related to idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), may play a role in the pathogenesis of thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic liver disease. The aim of this study was to elucidate the prevalance of PA-IgG and to evaluate the effect of splenomegaly and PA-IgG on thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic liver disease. Methods: The 125 patients with chronic liver disease (31 chronic hepatitis, 44 liver cirrhosis, 50 hepatocellular carcinoma) were studied. The prevalance of PA-IgG was checked using direct platelet immunofluorescent test. Spleen index was obtained by multiplying the long axis by short axis (cm2). Results: The prevalance of PA-IgG increased gradually according to the severity of liver disease, and was significantily higher in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (44.0%) than in patients with chronic hepatitis (6.5%) or liver cirrhosis (18.2%)(p$lt;0.001, p$lt;0.01, respectively). For all patients groups platelet count in PA- IgG positive poup was not significantly different from that in PA-IgG negative group. Noticeably, there was a significant correlation between platelet count and spleen index (r=-0.36, p$lt;0.0001). Conclusions: The prevalance of PA-IgG increased gradually according to the severity of liver disease form chronic hepatitis to hepatocellular carcinoma. Spleen enlargement showed important roles in thrombocytopenia, but PA-IgG had no effect on platelet count.

<P>The effect of the post-annealing on the properties of the La<SUB>0.6</SUB>Sr<SUB>0.4</SUB>CoO<SUB>3-δ</SUB>-Ce<SUB>0.9</SUB>Gd<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> (LSC-GDC) nano-composite cathode fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is investigated. Implementing the post-annealing treatment at a temperature in the range of 800°C ∼ 1000°C enables the control of the grain size in the LSC-GDC over the range of several tens of nanometers to near one-hundred nanometers. Moreover, the post-annealing treatment improves the interconnectivity between the same materials and mitigates the vertical separation between the columnar domains, resulting in the reduction of the lateral conduction loss. In terms of the electrochemical properties, the cathodic activity of the post-annealed cathode appears to be reduced due to the reduction in the number of the surface reaction sites, which is a result of the post-annealing grain-size growth. Although this grain-size growth results less power output of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using a post-annealed LSC-GDC cathode relative to that of the SOFC using the as-deposited LSC-GDC cathode, the lifetime of the former at 650°C is improved.</P>

We have investigated microstructural and electrical properties of self-aligned Ni-InGaAs alloy used as contact material toInGaAs as a function rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature. The Ni-InGaAs alloy was the only phase resulting fromsolid-state reaction between Ni and InGaAs, regardless of the RTA temperature. Microstructural evolutions of Ni-InGaAs andoverlaid Ni films were observed for increasing RTA temperature. The increase in RTA temperature resulted in increasing thesize of the pinholes formed in the Ni film, which could be associated with the columnar growth nature of sputter-deposited Nifilm. A relatively uniform Ni-InGaAs layer was formed after RTA at 300 oC, which could be responsible for the minimumspecific contact resistivity observed at this temperature. Above this temperature, the Ni-InGaAs layer underwent severestructural degradation such as the formation of microvoids in its surface area, leading to a rapid increase in specific contactresistivity.
Evaluation of mandibular cortical bone thickness for placement of temporary anchorage devices (TADs)

Objective: In this study, we measured the cortical bone thickness in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas using computed tomography in order to evaluate the suitability of these areas for application of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and to suggest a clinical guide for TADs. Methods: The buccal and lingual cortical bone thickness was measured in 15 men and 15 women. Bone thickness was measured 4 mm apical to the interdental cementoenamel junction between the mandibular canine and the 2nd molar using the transaxial slices in computed tomography images. Results: The cortical bone in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas was thicker in men than in women. In men, the mandibular lingual cortical bone was thicker than the buccal cortical bone, except between the 1st and 2nd molars on both sides. In women, the mandibular lingual cortical bone was thicker in all regions when compared to the buccal cortical bone. The mandibular buccal cortical bone thickness increased from the canine to the molars. The mandibular lingual cortical bone was thickest between the 1st and 2nd premolars, followed by the areas between the canine and 1st premolar, between the 2nd premolar and 1st molar, and between the 1st molar and 2nd molar. Conclusions: There is sufficient cortical bone for TAD applications in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas. This provides the basis and guidelines for the clinical use of TADs in the mandibular buccal and lingual areas.

본 연구에서는 표준 게이트웨이 기반의 다중 생체계측 장비 및 CMCIS(Central Monitoring and Cardiology Information System) 기반의 통합 시스템을 개발하기 위한 타당성 분석을 위한 국내외 동향을 분석한 연구이다. 개발의 필요성을 타진하기 위하여 기술, 사회, 경제적 중요성과 국내외 관련기술의 현황을 분석하였다. 분석한 결과, 대부분 해외의 다국적 기업에 의존하는 실정이며 심혈관계 질환의 지속적 증가로 효율적인 의료 서비스를 위한 기술개발의 필요성이 높게 평가되었다. 또한 표준 게이트웨이 기술의 확보로 진단용 심전계 표준 게이트웨이를 적용함으로써 다양한 HIS 인터페이스가 가능하며, 편의성이 증대되어 활용성이 높아질 것으로 예상된다.

저자들은 이전에 정신병 병력이 없는 42세 여자 환자에서 결핵의 치료를 위해 1차 항결핵제를 사용하던 중, isoniazid 사용과 관련한 정신병을 경험하여 isoniazid의 중단과 항정신병 약물을 통해 치료한 1예를 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. A 42-year-old woman without a prior psychiatric history presented with psychotic symptoms that were suspected as related to treatment of tuberculosis with isoniazid. The psychotic symptoms resolved after isoniazid was discontinued. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of psychotic symptoms with use of this agent. (Korean J Med 78:650-653, 2010)
