Vol.34 No.1B

      • Research on Hazardous Materials in Fishery Products in Busan Area

        Jiyoon Lee,Hocheol Yun,Hyeonjeong Kwon,Eungung Jeong,Hyunnho Cho,Dayoung Kim,Seongju Lee,Jung-mi Kang 한국분석과학회 2021 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.11

To ensure the safety of fishery products marketed in Busan, 42 residual veterinary drugs, heavy metals (Pb, Cd and Hg) and radioactivity (131I, 134Cs, 137Cs) were analyzed. Fishery products were collected in 2020 from January to November, and collected products were divided into groups for further analysis. Fifty-one samples were analyzed for residual veterinary drugs, 157 samples for heavy metals and 322 samples for radioactivity. LC-MS/MS analysis showed that veterinary drugs were detected in 9 cases in 4 species of fishery products. Detected samples were Rockfish (5 cases), Olive flounder (2 cases), Sea bass (1 case) and Gizzard shad (1 case). The detected veterinary drugs were ciprofloxacin (3 cases), trimethoprim (3 cases), lincomycin (2 cases) and enrofloxacin (1 case), and the concentrations were below MRL (Maximum Residue Limit). A total of 157 samples were analyzed for heavy metals using ICP-MS and mean concentrations were 0.024 mg/kg for Pb, 0.063 mg/kg for Cd and 0.074 mg/kg for Hg. The concentrations of Pb, Cd and Hg were within MRL. Radioactivity was measured by HPGe spectrometer and among the 322 samples tested, radioactivity was not detected in 321 samples which means that the activity was below MDA (Minimum Detectable Activity). For 1 sample (Sea bass), 0.88 Bq/kg of 137Cs was detected, but 238Pu, 239Pu, 240Pu and 90Sr were not detected in the subsequent experiment.

Is loss of smell an early predictor of COVID-19 severity: a systematic review and meta-analysis

        Sujata Purja,Hocheol Shin,Ji-Yun Lee,EunYoung Kim 대한약학회 2021 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.44 No.7

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the severityof coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), caused bysevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2), is likely to be distinguished by variations in lossof smell (LOS). Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis of 45articles that include a total of 42,120 COVID-19 patientsfrom 17 diff erent countries to demonstrate that severely illor hospitalized COVID-19 patients have a lesser chanceof experiencing LOS than non-severely ill or non-hospitalizedCOVID-19 patients (odds ratio = 0.527 [95% CI0.373–0.744; p < 0.001] and 0.283 [95% CI 0.173–0.462;p < 0.001], respectively). We also proposed a possiblemechanism underlying the association of COVID-19 severitywith anosmia, which may explain why patients withoutsense of smell develop severe COVID-19. Variations in LOSaccording to the severity of COVID-19 is a global phenomenon, with few exceptions. Since severely ill patients have alower rate of anosmia, patients without anosmia should be monitored more closely in the early stages of COVID-19, forearly diagnosis of severity of illness. An understanding ofhow the severity of COVID-19 infection and LOS are associatedhas profound implications for the clinical managementand mitigation strategies for the disease.

      • Correlation between gut microbiota and personality in adults: A cross-sectional study

        Kim, Han-Na,Yun, Yeojun,Ryu, Seungho,Chang, Yoosoo,Kwon, Min-Jung,Cho, Juhee,Shin, Hocheol,Kim, Hyung-Lae Elsevier 2018 Brain, behavior, and immunity Vol.69 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Personality affects fundamental behavior patterns and has been related with health outcomes and mental disorders. Recent evidence has emerged supporting a relationship between the microbiota and behavior, referred to as brain-gut relationships. Here, we first report correlations between personality traits and gut microbiota. This research was performed using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory and the sequencing data of the 16S rRNA gene in 672 adults. The diversity and the composition of the human gut microbiota exhibited significant difference when stratified by personality traits. We found that personality traits were significantly correlated with diversity of gut microbiota, while their differences were extremely subtle. High neuroticism and low conscientiousness groups were correlated with high abundance of Gammaproteobacteria and Proteobacteria, respectively when covariates, including age, sex, BMI and nutrient intake, were controlled. Additionally, high conscientiousness group also showed increased abundance of some universal butyrate-producing bacteria including Lachnospiraceae. This study was of observational and cross-sectional design and our findings must be further validated through metagenomic or metatranscriptomic methodologies, or metabolomics-based analyses. Our findings will contribute to elucidating potential links between the gut microbiota and personality, and provide useful insights toward developing and testing personality- and microbiota-based interventions for promoting health.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Personality traits were correlated with gut microbiota composition. </LI> <LI> Gammaproteobacteria was increased in high neuroticism group. </LI> <LI> Low conscientiousness group showed increased abundance of Proteobacteria. </LI> <LI> The low conscientiousness group showed decreased abundance of Lachnospiraceae. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Meta-analysis of genome-wide SNP- and pathway-based associations for facets of neuroticism

        Kim, Song E,Kim, Han-Na,Yun, Yeo-Jun,Heo, Seong Gu,Cho, Juhee,Kwon, Min-Jung,Chang, Yoosoo,Ryu, Seungho,Shin, Hocheol,Shin, Chol,Cho, Nam H,Sung, Yeon Ah,Kim, Hyung-Lae Nature Publishing Group 2017 Journal of human genetics Vol.62 No.10

<P>Neuroticism is a heritable personality trait that is comprised of distinct sub-factors, or facets. Sub-factors of neuroticism are linked to different emotional states or psychiatric symptoms and studying the genetic variants associated with these facets may help reveal the biological mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders. In the present study, a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for six facets of neuroticism was performed in 5584 participants from three cohorts. Additionally, a Gene Set Enrichment Analysis was conducted to find biological pathways associated with each facet. Six neuroticism facets (N1: anxiety, N2: angry hostility, N3: depression, N4: self-consciousness, N5: impulsivity and N6: vulnerability) were assessed using the Korean version of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. In the single-nucleotide polymorphism-based analysis, results showed genome-wide significance for N2 within the <I>MIR548H3</I> gene (rs1360001, <I>P</I>=4.14 × 10−9). Notable genes with suggestive associations (<I>P</I><1.0 × 10−6) were <I>ITPR1</I> for N1, <I>WNT7A</I> for N2, <I>FGF10</I> and <I>FHIT</I> for N3, <I>DDR1</I> for N4, <I>VGLL4</I> for N5 and <I>PTPRD</I> for N6. In the pathway-based analysis, the axon guidance pathway was identified to be associated with multiple facets of neuroticism (N2, N4 and N6). The focal adhesion and extracellular matrix receptor interaction pathways were significantly associated with N2 and N3. Our findings revealed genetic influences and biological pathways that are associated with facets of neuroticism.</P>

      • Neuroprotective effect of HT008-1, a prescription of traditional Korean medicine, on transient focal cerebral ischemia model in rats

        Bu, Youngmin,Kwon, Sungeun,Kim, Yun Tai,Kim, Mi-Yeon,Choi, Hoyoung,Kim, Jae Goo,Jamarkattel-Pandit, Nirmala,Doré,, Sylvain,Kim, Sung-Hoon,Kim, Hocheol John Wiley Sons, Ltd. 2010 Phytotherapy research Vol.24 No.8

<P>HT008-1 is one of the prescriptions used in Traditional Korean Medicine for the treatment of mental and physical weakness. It is composed of Panax ginseng, Acanthopanax senticosus, Angelica sinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis, which have been reported to have various pharmacological effects on the central nervous system. The study investigated whether HT008-1 has neuroprotective effects in a focal cerebral ischemia rat model. Stroke was induced in rats by 2 h of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) followed by 22 h of reperfusion. HT008-1 (30, 100 and 300 mg/kg) and the component herbs (300 mg/kg) were administered orally twice at 0 and 2 h after ischemia. Oral administration of 300 mg/kg HT008-1 reduced brain infarction by 45.7%, prolonged the latency time by 24.8% in the rotarod test, and enhanced the score by 17.0% in the balance beam test. Only P. ginseng and S. baicalensis showed protective effects, and HT008-1 showed a greater effect than its component herbs. HT008-1 down-regulated the COX-2 and OX-42 expression in the penumbra region. In conclusion, the results show that HT008-1 may be effective in a rat stroke model by an antiinflammatory mechanism and may improve sensory-motor function by reducing damage in the cortex and caudoputamen.
