The JASMIN Collaboration has performed an experiment to conduct measurements of nuclear reaction rates around the anti-proton production (Pbar) target at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). At the Pbar target station, the target, consisting an Inconel 600 cylinder, was irradiated by a 120 GeV/c proton beam from the FNAL Main Injector. The beam intensity was 3.6 X 10^(12) protons per second. Samples of Al, Nb, Cu, and Au were placed near the target to investigate the spatial and energy distribution of secondary particles emitted from it. After irradiation, the induced activities of the samples were measured by studying their gamma ray spectra using HPGe detectors. The production rates of 30 nuclides induced in Al, Nb, Cu, Au samples were obtained. These rates increase for samples placed in a forward (small angle) position relative to the target. The angular dependence of these reaction rates becomes larger for increasing threshold energy. These experimental results are compared with Monte Carlo calculations. The calculated results generally agree with the experimental results to within a factor of 2 to 3.

In an antiproton production (Pbar) target station of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), the secondary particles produced by bombarding a target with 120-GeV protons are shielded by a thick iron shield. In order to obtain experimental data on high-energy neutron transport at more than 100-GeV-proton accelerator facilities, we indirectly measured more than 100-MeV neutrons at the outside of the iron shield at an angle of 50˚ in the Pbar target station. The measurement was performed by using the Au activation method coupled with a low-background γ-ray counting system. As an indicator for the neutron flux, we determined the production rates of 8 spallation nuclides (^(196)Au, ^(188)Pt, ^(189)Ir, ^(185)Os, ^(175)Hf, ^(173)Lu, ^(171)Lu, and ^(169)Yb) in the Au activation detector. The measured production rates were compared with the theoretical production rates calculated using PHITS. We proved that the Au activation method can serve as a powerful tool for indirect measurements of more than100-MeV neutrons that play a vital role in neutron transport. These results will be important for clarifying the problems in theoretical calculations of high-energy neutron transport.

Highly proten-conductive elastic composites have been successfully prepared from $H_3PO_4$-doped silica gel and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block elastic copolymer. In addition solid state electric double-layer capacitors have been fabricated using the composite as an electrolyte and activated carbon powders(ACP) hybridized with the composite as a polrizable electrode. The cyclic voltammogram of the electric double-layer capacitor fabricated demonstrated that electric charge was stored in the elecric double-layer at the interface between the polarizable electrode and the electrolyte. The value of capacitance of the capacitor was 10 F/(gram of total ACP), which was comparable to that of the capacitors using conventional liquid electrolytes.

Ceramides (Cer) and glucosylceramides (GlcCer) play an important role in moisturizing the epidermis. Dietary GlcCer has been reported to improve transepidermal water loss (TEWL). However, the effect of GlcCer on epidermal Cer and GlcCer has not been well established. Therefore, we prepared a GlcCer-rich fraction (GCFr) from rice and evaluated its effect on TEWL and epidermal Cer and GlcCer in mice. In addition, we examined the effect of GlcCer (d18:2) contained in GCFr on the changes in Cer and GlcCer in a human epidermal equivalent. Oral dosing of GCFr (3 and 10 mg/[kg·day]) improved TEWL treated with sodium dodecyl sulfate. In the skin, epidermal Cer 1 was increased, and GlcCer (esterified ω-hydroxy fatty acid and sphingosine [EOS]) and a complex mixture of GlcCer (NS), (NP), and (C24,26-AS), known as GlcCer A/B were decreased by the GCFr. These changes were accompanied with the enhancement of glucosylceramide synthase (GCSase) and glucocerebrosidase expression. On the other hand, GlcCer (d18:2) increased Cer 1, Cer 2, GlcCer (EOS), and GlcCer A/B in a human epidermal equivalent accompanied with expression of GCSase and epidermal maturation markers. These results suggest that oral dosing of rice-derived GlcCer can compensate for epidermal loss of Cer by enhancing epidermal GlcCer metabolism. Rice-derived GlcCer may improve epidermal water loss and barrier function.

As a method of instruction of information morals education, Tamada and others proposes the method of instruction by three sorts of knowledge, and also supposes that the method called “feedback method” of making one's act examine from a victim's position is effective to the student of low information morals (Tamada et al.1987). In this research, the new teaching materials which combined a feedback method and virtual reality (VR) technology were developed, and the effect was verified. In order for the student of low information morals to make it specifically look back upon the act performed within VR from a victim's position, within VR, the subject's head shot was attached to the face of the avatar which serves as an assailant, and victim experience was carried out. As a result, before and after carrying out victim experience, improvement in the consciousness to information morals and reduction of the act contrary to information morals were seen.
Anti-cancer effects of enzyme-digested fucoidan extract from seaweed Mozuku

Fucoidan is a uniquely-structured sulfated fucose-rich polysaccharide derived from brown algae. Recently, the abalone glycosidase-digested fucoidan extract (fucoidan extract) derived from seaweed Cladosiphon novae-caledoniae Kylin (Mozuku) draws much attention because of its clinical anti-cancer effect in Japan. Here, we report the cancer cells-specific apoptosis inducing effects of the fucoidan extract. The fucoidan extract suppressed the growth of various anchorage-dependent and -independent cancer cells. The fucoidan extract contained low molecular weight components, which induced apoptosis of human leukemic HL 60 cells but not of human lymphocytes. It was shown that the fucoidan extract lead caspase 3/7 activation and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in HL 60 cells. Another function of the fucoidan extract was also observed. It has been known that sugar chain expression on the surface of cancer cell membrane changes dependent on their malignancy. The analysis on sugar chain expression profiling using FITC-labeled lectins revealed that the expression of concanavalin A (Con A) binding sugar chain was enhanced by the treatment of human lung adenocarcinoma A549, human uterine carcinoma HeLa and human fibrosarcoma HT1080 cells with the fucoidan extract. Con A-induced apoptosis of cancer cells was stimulated in a dose-and time-dependent manner by the treatment with the fucoidan extract but not of human normal fibroblast TIG-1 cells.

11C-methionine (Met) positron emission tomography (PET) is one of the most commonly used PET tracers for evaluating brain tumors. However, few reports have described tips and pitfalls of 11C-Met PET for general practitioners. Physiological 11C-Met uptake, anatomical variations, vascular disorders, non-tumorous lesions such as inflammation or dysplasia, benign brain tumors and patient condition during 11C-Met PET examination can potentially affect the image interpretation and cause false positives and negatives. These pitfalls in the interpretation of 11C-Met PET images are important for not only nuclear medicine physicians but also general radiologists. Familiarity with the spectrum and pitfalls of 11C-Met images could help prevent unfavorable clinical results caused by misdiagnoses.
