      • Development and usability testing of an operating manual for a hair-braiding machine

        <P>The present study applied the concepts and techniques of usability testing to the development of an operating manual for a hair-braiding machine. A preliminary version of the manual was developed in four stages: (1) profiling user characteristics, (2) defining design features of the manual, (3) preparing contents, and (4) designing the format and layout of the manual. In each development stage, design factors, such as user characteristics and operating instructions, were identified and relevant methods, such as user profile analysis and hierarchical task analysis, were applied. The preliminary manual was evaluated by 5 cosmetology students (age, 18 to 25 years; training, 60 to 700 hours) by using various performance and preference measures and surveying opinions of the participants regarding likes, dislikes, and suggestions. Based on the test results, recommendations were made for better usability of the manual and revisions were made accordingly. The design and evaluation process of an operating manual presented in the study would help practitioners to develop a user-friendly manual. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.</P>

      • 인체측정항목 Coding 시스템 개발

        Objective: 본 연구는 다양한 기관들이 측정한 인체측정 데이터가 효율적으로 관리되고 활용될 수 있도록 인체측정항목들에 대한 coding 시스템을 개발하는 것이다. Background: 인체측정 데이터는 인간공학적 설계를 위해 활용되는 기초 정보로서 국내외의 다양한 기관들에 의해 수집되고 보고되어 왔다. 그러나, 인체측정 항목에 대한 코드화가 되지 않아 인체측정 데이터를 비교하고 유용하게 활용하는데 한계가 있다. Method: 본 연구는 인체측정항목 종류, 분류 및 코드화에 대한 기존 연구를 조사하여 인체측정항목의 특성을 고려한 코드화 방안을 개발하였고 표준화를 추진하였다. Results: 본 연구는 의미성, 구분성, 포용성, 적용성, 확장성의 원칙을 기반으로 인체측정항목의 코드화 방안을 개발하였고, 300여개의 인체측정항목들에 적용되었다. Conclusion: 본 연구에서 개발된 인체측정항목의 코드화 방안은 다양한 인체측정항목들을 적절하게 코드화 할 수 있음을 파악하였다. Application: 본 연구에서 개발된 인체측정항목의 코드화 방안이 인체측정, 데이터 관리, 데이터 활용에 유용하게 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

      • Development of an Optimal Console Layout Design System Based on Ergonomic Design Characteristics

        Objective: The present study developed optimal console layout design system based on ergonomic design characteristics (visibility, reachability, sequence of use, importance, frequency, functional group). Background: Although many design methods and systems based on optimization methods to allocate components such as button and display to specific layout are suggested, understanding and applying ergonomic design characteristics to design methods are lacking. Method: The present study figure out ergonomic design characteristics which are important to console layout design by analyzing papers of optimal layout design papers. Results: The present study developed three methods (quantification for component, layout, and ergonomic design characteristic) for applying ergonomic design characteristics to console layout. In addition, the present study suggested a protocol for an optimal console layout design system. Conclusion: The present study suggested a protocol for an optimal console layout design system which could apply ergonomic design characteristics to console layout. The console layout design system could suggest the result based on ergonomic design characteristics. Application: The optimal console layout design system which will be developed to the present study could design detection radar console, control room interface of power plant or factory, or control equipment of helicopter.

      • Development of a Physical Therapy System for Enhancement of Balance Ability

        Objective: 본 연구는 노인이나 편마비 환자 등의 균형능력을 평가하고 균형장애를 치료할 수 있는 기능성 게임 기반 물리치료 시스템을 개발하고자 한다. Background: 기존 물리치료 방법은 단순하고 지루한 동작을 반복 수행하는 것으로서 환자의 재활의지를 저하시킬 여지가 있으므로, 효과적인 물리치료를 위해 치료동기 및 흥미를 유발시키는 방법이 요구된다. 기존 균형장애의 평가는 임상의의 주관적 판단에 의하여 이루어지고 있으며 정량적 평가 체계가 미흡한 실정이다. Method: 본 연구는 국내외 선행 연구 조사, 기존 제품 조사, 그리고 전문가 자문을 통해 기존 균형훈련 물리치료 시스템의 문제를 파악하고 새로운 아이디어를 제안하였다. 제안된 아이디어는 실용성 및 임상효과 측면에서 평가되었으며, 최종 제품 concept이 도출되었다. Results: 본 연구를 통해 개발된 기능성 게임 기반의 균형훈련 물리치료 시스템 아이디어는 사용성, 만족도, 임상적 활용성, 치료효과 측면에서 보다 효과적인 균형훈련 방법을 제공할 것으로 기대된다. Conclusion: 본 연구에서 개발될 신체균형능력 향상을 위한 기능성 게임 물리치료 시스템은 기존의 물리치료 장비들과 비교하여 치료의 효율 측면에서 우수한 효과가 기대된다. 또한, 가정에서도 치료사 없이 손쉽고 재미있게 자가 치료를 진행할 수 있어 지속적 치료가 가능하다. Application: 제안된 균형훈련 물리치료 시스템 아이디어는 재활의학센터, 요양원, 그리고 가정 등에서 사용될 수 있도록 상용장비로 개발되고 있으며, 시제품이 개발되면 균형장애환자를 대상으로 사용성 및 임상적 활용성 등이 평가될 예정이다.

      • Identify Applicable Design for Environment (DfE) Tools at the Early Stages of Product Development

        Awareness of people, organizations and societies about environmental impacts has been dramatically increased in last decade. This has caused many firms and practitioners to consider environmental aspects in various areas such as product development, service, and so forth. Nowadays, manufacturing companies have come to the conclusion that making environmentally sustainable products can be their competitive advantage in the global market. To make sustainable products, organizations need to incorporate environmental issues into their product development processes. For this purpose, plenty of Design for Environment (DfE) tools have been developed thus far. Majority of these tools can be applied only at later stages of the product development process for the purpose of redesigning of products. However, the most effective way to consider environmental factors is to integrate these issues at the early stages of the process. Therefore, this paper aims at identifying applicable design for environment tools into the early stages of the product development process. In this paper, seventy-seven design for environment tools were analyzed in-depth in accordance with their fundamental attributes and features, and then were classified systematically. Based on this analysis, applicable design for environment tools into the early stages of the product development were distinguished, and recommended appropriately. Regarding to the findings of this research, only limited number of design for environment tools can be used for the early integration of environmental impacts into the product development process. It is expected that this study will help design for environment practitioners choose a proper design for environment tool for the early introduction of environmental issues, and consequently to design and develop environmentally sustainable products.
