        Computing Pore Size Distribution in Non-woven Fibrous Filter Media

        Fundamental understanding of transport properties of non-woven fibrous material is depended on in dept cognitionof their microstructure. Non-woven fibrous filter media are formed by the random distribution of fibers in a specific spaceexhibit a complicated pore size structure. Computing pore size distribution (PSD) is a vital parameter in studying materialtransport dynamics. In this work, a theoretical model was suggested based on the gamma distribution and fiber orientationdistribution to predict the PSD in non-woven fibrous filter media. In parallel, the analytical model was compared with theprevious PSD theories and experimental results. The 3D virtual fiber structure was constructed by using GeoDict code, andthe pore size was represented by the inscribed circle diameter. Parameters influencing the PSD were studied, including fiberdiameter, porosity, and fiber orientation. Comparison of simulation results with analytical model was made. The resultsdemonstrate that the angle between the fiber and the Z-axis has little effect on the PSD. When the porosity is consistent,smaller pores can be formed by reducing fiber diameter. With the fiber diameter is constant, larger pores can be formed byincreasing the porosity.

        Suppressing Erwinia carotovora Pathogenicity by Projecting N-Acyl Homoserine Lactonase onto the Surface of Pseudomonas putida Cells

        N-Acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) serve as the vital quorum-sensing signals that regulate the virulence of the pathogenic bacterium Erwinia carotovora. In the present study, an approach to efficiently restrain the pathogenicity of E. carotovora-induced soft rot disease is described. Bacillus thuringiensis-derived N-acyl homoserine lactonase (AiiA) was projected onto the surface of Pseudomonas putida cells, and inoculation with both strains was challenged. The previously identified N-terminal moiety of the ice nucleation protein, InaQ-N, was applied as the anchoring motif. A surface display cassette with inaQ-N/ aiiA was constructed and expressed under the control of a constitutive promoter in P. putida AB92019. Surface localization of the fusion protein was confirmed by Western blot analysis, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence microscopy. The antagonistic activity of P. putida MB116 expressing InaQ-N/AiiA toward E. carotovora ATCC25270 was evaluated by challenge inoculation in potato slices at different ratios. The results revealed a remarkable suppressing effect on E. carotovora infection. The active component was further analyzed using different cell fractions, and the cell surface-projected fusion protein was found to correspond to the suppressing effect.

      • PSSRC : A Web Service Registration Cloud Based on Structured P2P and Semantics

        <P>The Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) registry is widely used for organizing Web services in the Internet, but it cannot meet the requirement of organizing massive Web services in the cloud computing environment. In this paper, a Web service registration cloud based on structured P2P and semantics (PSSRC) is presented. On the one hand, PSSRC works on a structured P2P overlay which is organized by using Pastry in multiple registration nodes, where each registration node is composed of seven modules namely system configuration, schedule and distribution, P2P communication, access and control, UDDI, resources monitoring, and semantic process. On the other hand, a semantic ontology database named WordNet is used to process semantic queries in PSSRC. PSSRC inherits the advantage of UDDI in that the registration and discovery of Web services are transparent to Web services providers. Furthermore, it is shown by experiment that the capacity of PSSRC can be extended dynamically, and both semantic queries and large scalable accesses are well supported.</P>

        Prediction of cavitation dynamics and cavitation erosion around a three-dimensional twisted hydrofoil with an LES method

        The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method coupled with a Schnerr and Sauer cavitation model was adopted to simulate the unsteady cavitating flow around a Delft Twist 11 (Twist11) hydrofoil. We proposed a novel aggressiveness indicator to predict the risk of cavitation erosion on the hydrofoil surface by utilizing LES simulations as input. The proposed aggressiveness indicator introduces the time-averaged pressure, the hypotheses of Nohmi et al. and the concept of the power exponent into the energy balance approach. The results show that the current numerical method integrally reproduces the evolution of the cloud cavity observed in the cavitation tunnel. The cavitation erosion risk predicted by the aggressiveness indicator Ce1D 0 n¼5 agrees well with the erosion pattern obtained from the paint test. The predicted erosion risk regions are located in the “hoof” positions (region 2 and region 3) of the horse-shoe-shaped cloudy cavity and the positions (region 1) near the cavity closure line.

        Risk of Dementia in Long-Term Benzodiazepine Users: Evidence from a Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies

        Background and Purpose There is conflicting evidence in the literature on the association between benzodiazepines (BDZs) and the risk of dementia. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the relationship between the long-term usage of BDZs and the risk of dementia. Methods The PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched for relevant publications up to September 2017. The literature search focused on observational studies that analyzed the relationship between the long-term use of BDZs and the risk of dementia. Pooled rate ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were assessed using a random-effects model. The robustness of the results was checked by performing subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Results Ten studies were included: six case–control and four cohort studies. The pooled RR for developing dementia was 1.51 (95% CI=1.17–1.95, p=0.002) in patients taking BDZ. The risk of dementia was higher in patients taking BDZs with a longer half-life (RR=1.16, 95% CI= 0.95–1.41, p=0.150) and for a longer time (RR=1.21, 95% CI=1.04–1.40, p=0.016). Conclusions This meta-analysis that pooled ten studies has shown that BDZ significantly increases the risk of dementia in the elderly population. The risk is higher in patients taking BDZ with a longer half-life (>20 hours) and for a longer duration (>3 years).

        Varilactones and wortmannilactones produced by Penicillium variabile cultured with histone deacetylase inhibitor

        Seven polyketides, including four new onesnamed as varilactones A–B (1–2) and wortmannilactonesM–N (3–4), as well as three biogenetically related knownwortmannilactones E, F and H (5–7), were isolated fromthe fungus Penicillium variabile HXQ-H-1, cultivated inpotato-based medium with the histone deacetylase inhibitorsuberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA). Their structures(1–7) were established by analysis of NMR and MS data,and the absolute configuration of oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptaneunit was deduced from 1H-NMR analyses on MPA estersafter chemical reduction reaction. Among them, varilactonesA and B (1 and 2), features a novel skeleton with atriene unit linking an oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane and anoxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane rings.

        致使性“得”字句構式中致使詞论元的實現

        Based on the interaction between construction and causative words, this paper explains the reasons for the diversity of causative words in the construction of causative words. This paper refers to Goldberg’s construction diagram and summarizes the interaction schema between the causative construction argument and the actor role of causative words. In this paper, relevant examples are used to explain the principle of the integration of the constructional elements of causative words and the roles of participants in causative words. On the basis of the fusion principle, this paper analyzes how the causative construction chooses and limits the actor role of causative words. This paper also makes a detailed summary of the fusion law between the causative constructors and the participants of causative words. 本文以致使性“得”字句為研究對象, 從構式與致使詞的互動角度出發, 對致使性“得”字句構式中致使詞多樣性的原因作出了解釋。首先參考Goldberg的構式圖, 總結了致使性“得”字句構式論元與致使詞的參與者角色的互動圖式。其次, 運用相關例句詳細闡釋了致使性“得”字句構式論元與致使詞的參與者角色的融合原則。在融合原則的基礎上, 分析了致使性“得”字句構式是如何對致使詞的參與者角色進行選擇和限制的。此外, 致使性“得”字句包含的事件數量的不同會影響構式論元與致使詞參與者角色的融合過程, 本文對不同事件數量的致使性“得”字句構式論元與致使詞參與者角色的融合規律也進行了詳細地總結。

        The cytoplasmic loops of AgrC contribute to the quorum-sensing activity of Staphylococcus aureus

        In Staphylococcus aureus, the accessory gene regulator (agr) quorum-sensing system is thought to play an important role in biofilm formation. The histidine kinase AgrC is one of the agr system components and activated by the self-generated auto-inducing peptide (AIP), which is released continuously into the extracellular environment during bacterial growth. The extracellular loops (Extra-loops) of AgrC are crucial for AIP binding. Here, we reported that the cytoplasmic loops (Cyto-loops) of AgrC are also involved in Agr activity. We identified S. aureus ST398 clinical isolates containing a naturally occurring single amino acid substitution (lysine to isoleucine) at position 73 of an AgrC Cyto-loop that exhibited significantly stronger biofilm formation and decreased Agr activity compared to the wild-type strain. A constructed strain containing the K73I point mutation in AgrC Cyto-loop continued to show a growth dependent induction of the agr system, although the growth dependent induction was delayed by about 6 h compared to the wild-type. In addition, a series of strains containing deletion mutants of the AgrC Cyto- and Extra-loops were constructed and revealed that the removal of the two Cyto-loops and Extra-loops 2 and 3 totally abolished the Agr activity and the growth-dependence on the agr system induction. Remarkably, the Extra-loop 1 deletion did not affect the Agr activity. In conclusion, the AgrC Cyto-loops play a crucial role in the S. aureus quorum-sensing activity.
