Solid animal wastes in Japan are treated mainly by composting. The composting process under controlled conditions is able to convert the wastes into high-quality organic fertilizer. Various types of composting facilities with/without forced aeration and turning device are available. Characterization of the maturing process during composting was studied, to improve the quality of compost and to make the degree of maturity. Recycling of animal wastes as compost without any environmental pollution will be closely related to the development of sustainable agriculture with organic fertilizer in Japan.

山形縣生まれ. 一九五三年東京大學敎養學部フランス科第一期生として卒業. 五五∼五七年佛政府給費留學生としてパリ大學に留學. 六十年東大大學院人文科學硏究科比較文學比較文化專門課程修了, 六三年同大敎養學部專任講師, 六五年助敎授を經て七五年敎授. 八三∼八八年同大大學院比較文學比較文化の主任を務める. また六五∼六七年米國プリンストン大學客員硏究員, 七五∼七六年ウッドロ-·ウィルソン硏究所(ワシントン)硏究員, 國立國際日本文化硏究センタ-敎授. 一九九七年四月から大正大學文學部敎授. 專攻は近代日本比較文化史. 文學博士. 多數の著書があり, 岩倉使節團の硏究を出發点として「大君の使節」『渡邊華山·優しい旅びと』『明治維新と日本人』『平賀源內』(八一年サントリ-學芸賞受賞)など, 明治維新史および江戶期の洋學と洋學者を硏究. また「與謝蕪村の小さな世界』で俳人蕪村へとさかのぼる. 一方, 明治以降の文學と美術の比較文化史にも取り組み, 「みだれ髮の系譜」, 大著『繪畵の領分」(八四年大佛次郎賞受賞)のほか.「文化の往還』「繪のなかの東京」『昨日の空-東大駒場憧憬集』がある.
Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillation in PuIn3

The Fermi surface of PuIn3 is investigated using flux-grown single crystals. Shubnikov-de Haas(SdH) oscillations were detected by means of the skin-depth measurement using a proximitydetector-oscillator circuit. Angular dependence of the SdH frequency which corresponds to theextremal cross-sectional area of Fermi surface agrees well with the previous magnetic susceptibilitymeasurement using conventional field-modulation method. The SdH oscillation suddenly vanisheswhen the magnetic field is tilted from the cubic [111] direction.
Epitaxial Growth of ZnO Films Prepared by Using MO-CVD with Zn(C9H15O3)₂

High-quality ZnO epitaxial lms with highly at surface were successfully prepared by using low-pressure metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition (MO-CVD) with Zn(C9H15O3)2 as a new liquid-phase source material. The crystal structures were characterized by using X-ray diraction and re ection high-energy electron diraction (RHEED) analysis. The surface morphology was evaluated by means of atomic force microscopy. Single-crystal ZnO (1120) lms were epitaxially grown on the (0112) plains of sapphire substrates. The RHEED patterns for the surfaces of the ZnO (1120) lms exhibited sharp streaky patterns with Kikuchi lines. The present ZnO lms had surface morphologies as excellent as those of lms that had been prepared well by using molecular beam epitaxy.
