Effect of flexibility on flapping wing characteristics in hover and forward flight

Abstract

Wing flexibility affects the flight performance of flapping-wing micro air vehicles. In this paper, we present a computational approach for the aeroelastic analysis of realistic insect-like flexible flapping wings with hovering and forward-flight modes. A three-dimensional preconditioned Navier–Stokes solver is used with a deforming mesh technique for the aerodynamic analysis of a flapping wing. For the structural analysis, co-rotational (CR) finite elements and CR shell elements are used. As seen from the numerical analysis, wing flexibility leads to thrust increments with the increasing flapping frequency. The advance ratio, however, is the cause of the thrust decrease for flexible flapping wings with high flapping-frequency motions.

Highlights

A aeroelastic analysis of a realistic insect-like flexible flapping wing with hovering and forward-flight modes is presented.

A three-dimensional preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver and a structural solver with co-rotational (CR) finite elements and CR shell elements are used for the aeroelastic analysis.

The thrust and lift forces of the flexible wing increase as the flapping frequency increases, but they decrease as the advance ratio increases.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a normal flora of human skin and is occasionally associated with pathogenic infections. We report the complete genome sequence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis strain Z0118SE0272 isolated from the residential environment sharing by a companion dog and dwellers. Resistance to cefoxitin was observed in the strain, whereas it was susceptible to erythromycin, clindamycin, quinupristin-dalfopristin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, mupirocin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, linezolid, and tigecycline. The strain Z0118SE0272 identified as sequence type 130 possessed the mecA gene responsible for methicillin resistance, which composed the new type of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec elements lacking mecRI.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius Z0118SP0130 was isolated from eye specimen of a companion dog in South Korea. The complete genome of Z0118SP0130 consisted of a 2,663,277 bp chromosome and there was no plasmid. The strain was identified as the sequence type 45 and contained a mecA gene which comprised of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec type Vb (5C2&5). Antimicrobial resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, quinupristin-dalfopristin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, mupirocin, oxacillin, streptomycin, and gentamicin was observed in the strain.

Local feature extraction methods for images and videos are widely applied in the fields of image understanding and computer vision. However, robust features are detected differently when using the latest feature detectors and descriptors because of diverse image environments. This paper analyzes various feature extraction methods by summarizing algorithms, specifying properties, and comparing performance. We analyze eight feature extraction methods. The performance of feature extraction in various image environments is compared and evaluated. As a result, the feature detectors and descriptors can be used adaptively for image sequences captured under various image environments. Also, the evaluation of feature detectors and descriptors can be applied to driving assistance systems, closed circuit televisions (CCTVs), robot vision, etc.

Growing needs for young people and second car of family are causing the increase of small vehicle. It’s concerned about lower leg injury in a frontal crash of small car because of short engine bay area and small legroom. In addition, footrest for driver’s convenience may cause more severe injury of lower leg in the accident. For this reason and according to strengthened safety requirement, it takes effort to reduce the lower leg injury. In this paper, occupant behavior CAE for the small vehicle which is installed footrest is conducted. This paper demonstrates y-moment of lower leg is main factor of tibia index and shows footrest optimization proposal for the improvement of lower leg injury.

In order to meet the world fuel economy standards, the global vehicle market of Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicle(BEV), and even Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle(FCEV) has been growing rapidly. Among them, PHEV which consists of Charge Depleting mode(CD mode) and Charge Sustaining mode(CS mode) has both characteristics of HEV and BEV. In this paper, the representative PHEVs in Toyota, Honda, and General Motors(GM) are analyzed respectively focusing on the powertrain configurations and control strategies, which is the first step of this study. Based on the conclusion of each characteristic of PHEVs, this study will move on to the next steps for developing the battery control strategy and optimizing the system.
