<P>In this review, we outline the synthesis and luminescence properties of metal-ion-incorporated doped nanoparticles and surface-passivated doped nanoparticles. The synthetic routes we describe are limited to those involving soft solution processing. The doping effects are discussed in this review on the semiconductor nanoparticles confining the size range near to the 'quantum dot size.' The effects on luminescence with respect to ionic valance of dopants and the luminescence phenomena on mismatching of ionic radii between the host-guest are also provided. In addition, we discuss the role of passivated organic surfactants and the necessity of surface passivation of doped or undoped nanoparticles with other semiconductor materials that possess larger band gaps. Biocompatible semiconductor nanoparticles and some of their applications are also mentioned briefly.</P>
Renal Failure in a Female Muskrat

야생 포유류의 신부전 증후군은 거의 보고가 없다. Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)는 중간 크기의 설치류이며 많은 질병을 가지고 있으나, 신부전 증후군은 보고된 바가 없으며, 본 케이스는 병리학적 진단을 위해 6개월령 암컷사향쥐의 다른 임상증후군 없는 상태로 부검을 실시하였다. 요관, 신장결석과 수진증을 관찰하였고, 결석에 의한 심각한 신장 손상과, 뇌 손상을 포함한 전신 출혈과 석회화가 관찰되었고, 이는 신장 손상으로 인한 요로결석과 장기 손상에 기인한 것이다. 괴사 및 미세석회화는 신장 피질 및 수질에서, 특히 근위 곡 세뇨관 및 신장의 수집관에서 검출되었다. 사구체의 초자양변성이 크게 관찰되었으며 이는 만성 신염을 나타내며. 이러한 소견은 특히 신장에 대한 진균성 독성 효과를 나타내는 것으로 사료된다. 또한, 폐에서 호중구 및 단핵 세포의 침윤이 관찰되었고, 비장에서도 만성 염증세포인 형질세포의 침윤이 관찰되었다. 본 소견에서는 사향쥐 신부전에 따른 사인은 오염된 사료섭취로 의심되는 것으로 판단된다. Renal failure syndrome in wild mammals is infrequently reported. Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is a medium-sized rodent known to carry many diseases but rarely exhibiting renal failure. A six-month old female muskrat was submitted to our laboratory for pathological diagnosis, and necropsy revealed severe renal damage with sand-like lithiasis in the ureter, renal calculi, and hydronephrosis. All major organs, including the cerebrum, also showed systemic hemorrhage and calcification which may have been due to uremia induced by renal failure. Histopathologically, necrosis and microcalcification were detected in the renal cortex and the medulla, especially in the proximal convoluted tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney. Significant hyalinization of the glomeruli was also observed, and this suggested chronic nephritis. These findings would support mycotoxic effects, particularly on the kidney. Moreover, infiltration of neutrophils and mononuclear cells was observed in the lung and of plasma cells in the spleen. The definitive cause of the toxic effects in this case of muskrat renal failure could be attributed to contaminated food.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is the large intestine disease that results in chronic inflammation and ulcers in the colon. Rg3-enriched Korean Red Ginseng extract (Rg3-RGE) is known for its pharmacological activities. Persicaria tinctoria (PT) is also used in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study is to investigate the attenuating effects of Rg3-RGE with PT on oxazolone (OXA)-induced UC in mice. Methods: A total of six groups of mice including control group, OXA (as model group, 1.5%) group, sulfasalazine (75 mg/kg) group, Rg3-RGE (20 mg/kg) group, PT (300 mg/kg) group, and Rg3-RGE (10 mg/kg) with PT (150 mg/kg) group. Data on the colon length, body weight, disease activity index (DAI), histological changes, nitric oxide (NO) assay, Real-time PCR of inflammatory factors, ELISA of inflammatory factors, Western blot, and flow cytometry analysis were obtained. Results: Overall, the combination treatment of Rg3-RGE and PT significantly improved the colon length and body weight and decreased the DAI in mice compared with the treatment with OXA. Additionally, the histological injury was also reduced by the combination treatment. Moreover, the NO production level and inflammatory mediators and cytokines were significantly downregulated in the Rg3-RGE with the PT group compared with the model group. Also, NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-𝛋B) were suppressed in the combination treatment group compared with the OXA group. Furthermore, the number of immune cell subtypes of CD4<sup>+</sup> T-helper cells, CD19<sup>+</sup> B-cells, and CD4<sup>+</sup> and CD25<sup>+</sup> regulatory T-cells (Tregs) was improved in the Rg3-RGE with the PT group compared with the OXA group. Conclusion: Overall, the mixture of Rg3-RGE and PT is an effective therapeutic treatment for UC.
Baccaurea motleyana (Rambai): nutritional, phytochemical, and medicinal overview

Baccaurea motleyana (Rambai) is a widely known plant for its fruits in South-East Asia, especially in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Traditionally it is also used as a source of medicine. In this review, we summarized the use of Rambai as a food source, its physicochemical, nutritional, biochemical, and antioxidant contents, and properties, its use as traditional medicine, and its medicinal properties based on modern studies. We found that Rambai fruits are good sources of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Rambai fruits have relatively low amounts of fats, organic acids, phenolics, and antioxidants compared to many other familiar fruits. 88 phytochemicals identified by different methods are reported in this paper which have a variety of health benefits and medicinal properties. Rambai tree parts were found to exhibit antidiabetic, antibacterial, and skincare properties. No anticancer and antifungal property of Rambai has been found yet. Many more studies are required to discover more biochemical and medicinal properties of Rambai.

During the lightning activities every air terminal has the equal chances to be hit by the lightning fashes and it produce electric feld in the surrounding. Therefore, with the passage of time when the lightning air terminals become aged due to acidic rain and chemical contamination, lightning air terminal (LAT) bypasses on side edges takes place which has not been given much attention by the researchers. A modifed lightning protection system (LPS) was proposed in this paper using experimental and electromagnetic feld approach. One of the LAT on diferent geometrical structure was selected as sacrifcial point in order to reduce the chances of LAT bypasses. The modifed protection system can be referred by diferent standard to make sure buildings protection. All the experimental work was done using high voltage impulse and ANSYS/MAXWELL was used as a simulation tool. The modifed protection technique will help diferent standards to provide comprehensive protective measures against lightning.

<P>GABA<SUB>B</SUB> receptors (R) are widely expressed and distributed in the nervous system, and have been implicated in variety of neurodegenerative and pathophysiological disorders. However, the exact molecular mechanism regarding responsibility of GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R in downstream signaling pathway is not well understood. The present study was undertaken to explore the downstream signaling and role of GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R upon acute ethanol and pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) exposure for (20 min) in cortical and hippocampal neuronal cell cultures by using GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R RNA interference (i) (30 nM, 48 h) at gestational days 17.5. The results showed that GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R and protein kinase A-α (PKA) showed decreased expression upon ethanol and PTZ exposure in cortical and hippocampal neurons during transfected and nontransfected conditions, whereas these effects could lead to significant changes in phosphorylation of cAMP-response element binding protein (p-CREB) expression where GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R was knocked down. Furthermore, intracellular Ca<SUP>+2</SUP> concentrations were also reduced in some groups after transfection with GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R RNAi. These results showed a critical role of GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R upon ethanol and PTZ exposure by modulating downstream signaling pathway. Finally, these findings suggested that inhibition of GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R results in the modulation of PKA, p-CREB pathway may play a role in long-term changes in the nervous system, and may be an underlying cause of ethanol's effects.
