      • Analysis of Different Classification Techniques for Two-Class Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Based Brain-Computer Interface

Naseer, Noman,Qureshi, Nauman Khalid,Noori, Farzan Majeed,Hong, Keum-Shik Hindawi Publishing Corporation 2016 Computational intelligence and neuroscience Vol.2016 No.-

<P>We analyse and compare the classification accuracies of six different classifiers for a two-class mental task (mental arithmetic and rest) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals. The signals of the mental arithmetic and rest tasks from the prefrontal cortex region of the brain for seven healthy subjects were acquired using a multichannel continuous-wave imaging system. After removal of the physiological noises, six features were extracted from the oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) signals. Two- and three-dimensional combinations of those features were used for classification of mental tasks. In the classification, six different modalities, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), <I>k</I>-nearest neighbour (<I>k</I>NN), the Naïve Bayes approach, support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural networks (ANN), were utilized. With these classifiers, the average classification accuracies among the seven subjects for the 2- and 3-dimensional combinations of features were 71.6, 90.0, 69.7, 89.8, 89.5, and 91.4% and 79.6, 95.2, 64.5, 94.8, 95.2, and 96.3%, respectively. ANN showed the maximum classification accuracies: 91.4 and 96.3%. In order to validate the results, a statistical significance test was performed, which confirmed that the<I> p </I>values were statistically significant relative to all of the other classifiers (<I>p</I> < 0.005) using HbO signals. </P>

        Naseer Ahmad,Shahid Kamal,Zulfiqar Ali Raza,Sharjeel Abid,Muhammad Zeshan 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.5

Present work investigates multi-response optimization in development of super-oleohydrophobic cotton fabricunder pad-dry-cure method. A bleached cotton fabric was treated with ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated oil and waterrepellent finish (Oleophobol CP-C®) to impart in it antibacterial activity, UV protection and super oleo/hydrophobicity. Taguchi based fuzzy logics and grey relational analytical techniques were employed to obtain simultaneous optimum settingsof input parameters including concentrations of ZnO NPs, O-CPC® finish and Knittex FEL®, and curing temperature formultiple responses. The fuzzy logics and grey relational analysis were employed on the experimental data to determinesignificant process parameters for optimization of multiple responses. The present set of techniques was effectively used todevelop super-hydrophobic (WCA: 162 o) and oleophobic (OCA: 140 o) cotton fabric along with appropriate textileproperties as reported in the text. The developed fabric has potential uses in various domestic and house-hold applicationsdue to its antibacterial, self-cleaning, non-staining and UV-protection properties.

Coating Performance of SiO2/ Epoxy Composites as a Corrosion Protector

        Naseer Alhaboubi,Dina R. Rzaij,Nagham Y. Ahmed 한국부식방식학회 2022 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.21 No.2

To solve the corrosion problem of industrial equipment and other constructions containing metals, corrosion protection can be performed by using coating which provides a barrier between the metal and its environment. Coatings play a significant role in protecting irons and steels in harsh marine and acidenvironments. This study was conducted to identify an anti-corrosive epoxy coating for carbon steel composite with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% concentrations of nanoparticles of SiO2 using the dip-coating method. The electrochemical behavior was analyzed with open circuit potential (OCP) technics and polarization curves (Tafle) in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 5 vol% H2SO4 media. The structure, composition, and morphology were characterized using different analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that epoxynano SiO2 coating demonstrated a lower corrosion rate of 2.51 × 10-4 mm/year and the efficiency of corrosion protection was as high as 99.77%. The electrochemical measurement showed that the nano-SiO2 / epoxy coating enhanced the anti-corrosive performance in both NaCl and H2SO4 media.

      • Neuroprotective effect of vitamin C against the ethanol and nicotine modulation of GABAB receptor and PKA-α expression in prenatal rat brain

        Naseer, M.I.,Lee, H.Y.,Kim, M.O. Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2010 Synapse Vol.64 No.6

<P>Prenatal ethanol exposure has various deleterious effects on neuronal development and can induce various defects in developing brain, resulting in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABAB) receptor (R) is known to play an important role during the development of the central nervous system (CNS). Our study was designed to investigate the effect of ethanol (100 mM), nicotine (50 μM) (for 30 min and 1 h), vitamin C (vitC, 0.5 mM), ethanol plus vitC, and nicotine plus vitC on expression level of GABAB1, GABAB2R, and protein kinase A-α (PKA) in prenatal rat cortical and hippocampal neurons at gestational days (GD) 17.5. The results showed that, upon ethanol and nicotine exposure, GABAB1 and GABAB2R protein expression increased significantly in the cortex and hippocampus for a short (30 min) and long term (1 h), whereas only GABAB2R subunit was decreased upon nicotine exposure for a long term in the cortex. Furthermore, PKA expression in cortex and hippocampus increased with ethanol exposure during short term, whereas long-term exposure results increased in cortex and decreased in hippocampus. Moreover, the cotreatment of vitC with ethanol and nicotine showed significantly decreased expression of GABAB1, GABAB2R, and PKA in cortex and hippocampus for a long-term exposure. Mitochondrial membrane potential, Fluoro-jade-B, and propidium iodide staining were used to elucidate possible neurodegeneration. Our results suggest the involvement of GABABR and PKA in nicotine and ethanol-mediated neurodevelopmental defects and the potential use of vitC as a effective protective agent for FAS-related deficits. • Vitamin C protects against ethanol and PTZ‐induced apoptotic neurodegeneration in prenatal rat hippocampal neurons

        Naseer, M.I.,Ullah, N.,Ullah, I.,Koh, P.O.,Lee, H.Y.,Park, M.S.,Kim, M.O. Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2011 Synapse Vol.65 No.7

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Exposure to alcohol during brain development may cause a neurological syndrome called fetal alcohol syndrome, characterized by pre‐ and postnatal growth deficiencies, craniofacial anomalies, and evidence of CNS dysfunction. The objective of this study was to evaluate pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) and ethanol effects on Bax, Bcl‐2 expression, which further induced activation of caspase‐3, release of cytochrome‐c from mitochondria, and to observe the protective effects of vitamin C (vit‐C) against PTZ and ethanol‐induced apoptotic neurodegeneration in primary‐cultured neuronal cells at gestational day 17.5. Apoptotic neurodegeneration and neuroprotective effect of vit‐C were measured by using 3‐[4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl]‐2,5‐diphenly tetrazolium bromide assay, Western blot analysis, which further conformed by the measurement of mitochondrial membrane potential using JC‐1 detection kit and immunofluorescence analysis. The results showed that PTZ and ethanol produced extensive Bax‐dependent caspase‐9 and caspase‐3 activation and caused neuronal apoptosis. Furthermore, the cotreatment of vit‐C along with ethanol and PTZ showed significantly decreased expression of Bax, caspase‐9, caspase‐3, cytochrome‐c, and significantly increased expression of antiapoptotic Bcl‐2 protein when compared with control group. Our findings indicate that PTZ and ethanol activate an intrinsic apoptotic death program in neurons that is likely to contribute to the neuropathologic effects in fetal alcohol exposure, and vit‐C can prevent some of the deleterious effects of PTZ and ethanol on the developing brain. The available experimental evidence and the safety of vit‐C in pregnancy suggest the experimental use of ascorbic acid as a new and effective protective agent ethanol and PTZ‐induced apoptotic neurodegeneration. • Frequency of Delayed Diagnosis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Pakistan

Naseer, Rabia,Naz, Iram,Mahmood, Muhammad Khurram Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.11

Objectives: To determine the frequency of delayed diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma in our setup; highlighting factors responsible for any delay and their possible relevance to demographic and diagnostic features. Methods: This cross sectional study of six months duration was conducted in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. A total of 246 patients, both male and female, having a biopsy proven definitive diagnosis of OSCC were included using a consecutive sampling technique. Delay in diagnosis was assessed from the stated period of time from when the patient first noticed symptoms of disease until a definitive diagnosis was made. We concluded delayed diagnosis if this was more than 40 days. Results: The ages of patients ranged from 27 to 60 years with a mean of $46.7{\pm}10.2$ years and a marked male predominance (3.7:1). Delayed diagnosis was observed in 91.5% of cases. However, statistically no significant differences were found with age, gender, marital, education status, household income and time of biopsy. Conclusion: Our primary finding of delayed diagnosis with no prior contact with any health care professional clearly reflects a need of taking urgent measures to avoid serious impacts on morbidity and mortality associated with OSCC.

Ethanol and PTZ effects on siRNA-mediated GABAB1 receptor: Down regulation of intracellular signaling pathway in prenatal rat cortical and hippocampal neurons

        Naseer, M.I.,Lee, H.Y.,Ullah, N.,Ullah, I.,Park, M.S.,Kim, S.H.,Kim, M.O. Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2010 Synapse Vol.64 No.3

<P>GABAB receptors (R) are widely expressed and distributed in the nervous system, and have been implicated in variety of neurodegenerative and pathophysiological disorders. However, the exact molecular mechanism regarding responsibility of GABAB1R in downstream signaling pathway is not well understood. The present study was undertaken to explore the downstream signaling and role of GABAB1R upon acute ethanol and pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) exposure for (20 min) in cortical and hippocampal neuronal cell cultures by using GABAB1R RNA interference (i) (30 nM, 48 h) at gestational days 17.5. The results showed that GABAB1R and protein kinase A-α (PKA) showed decreased expression upon ethanol and PTZ exposure in cortical and hippocampal neurons during transfected and nontransfected conditions, whereas these effects could lead to significant changes in phosphorylation of cAMP-response element binding protein (p-CREB) expression where GABAB1R was knocked down. Furthermore, intracellular Ca+2 concentrations were also reduced in some groups after transfection with GABAB1R RNAi. These results showed a critical role of GABAB1R upon ethanol and PTZ exposure by modulating downstream signaling pathway. Finally, these findings suggested that inhibition of GABAB1R results in the modulation of PKA, p-CREB pathway may play a role in long-term changes in the nervous system, and may be an underlying cause of ethanol's effects. • siRNA‐mediated GABAB receptor at early fetal rat brain upon acute and chronic ethanol exposure: Down regulation of PKA and p‐CREB expression

        Naseer, M.I.,Lee, H.Y.,Ullah, N.,Ullah, I.,Park, M.S.,Kim, M.O. Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2011 Synapse Vol.65 No.2

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>To observe the modulatory role of GABAB1R upon ethanol's effect during early brain development, we studied the effects of chronic maternal (10% ethanol during pregnancy) and acute (in vitro) ethanol exposure on the neuronal protein kinase A (PKA‐α) and phosphorylation of cAMP‐response element binding protein (p‐CREB), using a system where GABAB1R were specifically knocked down in the primary cells cultured at gestational day (GD) 12.5. The results showed that upon acute and chronic ethanol treatment the GABAB1R expression was decreased and further decreased when GABAB1R was transfection with siRNA, while increased upon exposure of baclofen, and baclofen plus phaclofen treatment. PKA expression was also decreased with acute and chronic ethanol treatment, whereas it showed increase upon exposure of baclofen and baclofen with phaclofen. Furthermore, intracellular Ca2+ concentration was increased upon ethanol, baclofen, phaclofen exposure but showed decrease in GABAB1R siRNA group. Finally, these effects could lead to changes of p‐CREB expression, which showed same expression pattern as PKA. We speculate that GABABR activity upon ethanol exposure could modulate intracellular calcium homeostasis and the expressional changes of PKA and p‐CREB, which cause various negative effects on fetal brain development and modulation of GABABR upon ethanol exposure may underlying cause of ethanol's effects.
