        Reestimation of The Renminbi

        In this paper, we analyze mainly the well-known relationship between deviation from absolute purchasing power parity and real per capita income by using panel regression models, and verify Balassa-Samuelson effects. We determine how much of the degree of misalignment of the renminbi (RMB) stands relative to the equilibrium real exchange rate using these methods. Although undervaluation or overvaluation of the RMB exists, most of the misalignments from the equilibrium exchange rate keep within two standard error bands. The Balassa-Samuelson effects are at work. Even considering the serial correlation and control variables (demographic variables, current account, M2/GDP, capital openness, corruption index, an interaction term), similar results can be obtained.

      • Overexpression of Cyclooxygenase-1 Correlates with Poor Prognosis in Renal Cell Carcinoma

        The aim of this study was to evaluate expression of COX-1 in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and its prognostic value. mRNA of COX-1 was detected in 42 paired RCC and adjacent normal tissues with quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Expression of COX-1 was also evaluated in 196 RCC sections and 91 adjacent normal tissues with immunohistochemistry. Statistical analysis was performed to assess COX-1 expression in RCC and its prognostic significance. The results of qRT-PCR showed mRNA levels of COX-1 in RCC tissues to be significantly higher than that in adjacent normal tissues (p < 0.001). Immunohistochemical assays also revealed COX-1 to be overexpressed in RCC tissues (p < 0.001). Statistical analysis demonstrated high expression of COX-1 was correlated with tumour size (p = 0.002), pathological stage (p = 0.003), TNM stage (p = 0.003, 0.007, 0.027, respectively), and tumour recurrence (p < 0.001). Survival analysis indicated patients with high expression of COX-1 had shorter survival time (p < 0.001), and COX-1 was an independent predictor. This is the first study to reveal overexpression of COX-1 in RRC and point to use as a prognostic marker in affected patients.

        Effect of the opening of a butterfly valve on the dynamic evolution of cavitation

        As the key control equipment for the transmission of fluid medium, processing valves are widely used in the transmission systems of fluid medium in energy, chemical industry, metallurgy and other fields, which play important roles in the stability and reliability of the system operation. When the flow cross-section is operated in a sudden change, the pressure decreases rapidly at the downstream, which leads to the cavitation in the processing valves. Cavitation makes serious erosion and damage on the valve core and pipeline surface, which makes the leakage and noise problems in processing valves. This seriously affects the regulation performance and lifetime of processing valves. In this article, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the transient cavitation in a model butterfly valve. By considering effects of local pressure on formation of cavitation, a modified model for calculating the diameter of cavitation bubbles was derived. Effects of valve opening degree were investigated on the dynamic evolution of cavitation by analyzing formation, development and collapse of cavitation. The generation, development and collapse of single cavitation bubble was obtained and discussed in details to state the interaction between vortices and cavitation. Attached and quasiperiodic cavitation were observed and analyzed at different valve opening degrees in detail as well.

        Diarylheptanoids suppress proliferation of pancreatic cancer PANC-1 cells through modulating shh-Gli-FoxM1 pathway

        Pancreatic cancer is one of the leading causes ofcancer, and it has the lowest 5-year survival rates. It isnecessary to develop more potent anti-pancreatic cancerdrugs to overcome the fast metastasis and resistance tosurgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and combinations ofthese. We have identified several diarylheptanoids as antipancreaticcancer agents from Alpinia officinarum (lessergalangal) and Alnus japonica. These diarylheptanoidssuppressed cell proliferation and induced the cellcycle arrest of pancreatic cancer cells (PANC-1). Amongthem, the most potent compounds 1 and 7 inhibited theshh-Gli-FoxM1 pathway and their target gene expression inPANC-1 cells. Furthermore, they suppressed the expressionof the cell cycle associated genes that were rescued bythe overexpression of exogenous FoxM1. Taken together,(E)-7-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenylhept-4-en-3-one (1) from Alpinia officinarum (lesser galangal) andplatyphyllenone (7) from Alnus japonica inhibit PANC-1cell proliferation by suppressing the shh-Gli-FoxM1 pathway,and they can be potential candidates for anti-pancreaticcancer drug development.

        Modeling of time-varying stress in concrete under axial loading and sulfate attack

        This paper has numerically investigated the changes of loading-induced stress in concrete with the corrosion time in the sulfate-containing environment. Firstly, based on Fick’s law and reaction kinetics, a diffusion-reaction equation of sulfate ion in concrete is proposed, and it is numerically solved to obtain the spatial and temporal distribution of sulfate ion concentration in concrete by the finite difference method. Secondly, by fitting the existed experimental data of concrete in sodium sulfate solutions, the chemical damage of concrete associated with sulfate ion concentration and corrosion time is quantitatively presented. Thirdly, depending on the plastic-damage mechanics, while considering the influence of sulfate attack on concrete properties, a simplified chemo-mechanical damage model, with stress-based plasticity and strain-driven damage, for concrete under axial loading and sulfate attack is determined by introducing the chemical damage degree. Finally, an axially compressed concrete prism immersed into the sodium sulfate solution is regarded as an object to investigate the time-varying stress in concrete subjected to the couplings of axial loading and sulfate attack.

        An Empirical Study of the Renminbi Equilibrium Exchange Rate

        In order to analyze the massive trade imbalance between China and America, we discuss the degree of RMB's misalignment in a tractable framework by estimating the long run equilibrium real effective exchange rate of the currency during 1980-2009 in this paper. Based on estimation of behavioral equilibrium exchange rate (BEER) and using Johansen co-integration technique, we conclude that RMB fluctuates around its long-run equilibrium exchange rate within a range of positive 3% and minus 4% bands. This implies that the currency has not been significantly undervalued or overvalued. According to the four control variables (terms of trade, GDP per capita, foreign exchange reserve and money supply), we deem that increase of foreign exchange reserve and per capita output, decrease of money supply will lead to the appreciation of RMB real effective exchange rate. Implications of the empirical findings of this study indicates China's exchange rate policy may have played an insignificant role in its trade surpluses.

        Design procedure for modal controllers for defective and nearly defective systems

        This paper presents a procedure for designing feedback controllers for defective systems with repeated eigenvalues, and also for a nearly defective system with close eigenvalues. For the nearly defective system, we first transform it into a defective one, and then apply the same method to deal with the nearly defective system. A method for computing the gain matrices is discussed here. The methodologies proposed are based on the modal coordinate equation to avoid the tedious mathematical manipulation. As an application of the present procedure, a numerical example is given.

      • Association of Six Susceptibility Loci with Prostate Cancer in Northern Chinese Men

        Background/Aim: Six prostate cancer (PCa) susceptibility loci were identified in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in populations of European decent. However, the associations of these 6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with PCa has remained tobe clarified in men in Northern China. This study aimed to explore the loci associated with PCa risk in a Northern Chinese population. Methods: Blood samples and clinical information of 289 PCa patients and 288 controls from Beijing and Tianjin were collected. All risk SNPs were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-high resolution melting curve technology and gene sequencing. Associations between PCa and clinical covariates (age at diagnosis, prostate-specific antigen [PSA], Gleason score, tumor stage, and level of aggressiveness) and frequencies of alleles and genotypes of these SNPs were analyzed using genetic statistics. Results: Among the candidate SNPs, 11p15 (rs7127900, A) was associated with PCa risk (P = 0.02, odds ratio [OR] = 1.64, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.09-2.46). Genotypes showed differences between cases and controls on 11p15 (rs7127900, A), 11q13 (rs7931342, T), and HNF1B (rs4430796, A) (P = 0.03, P = 0.01, and P = 0.04, respectively). The genotype TG on 11q13 (rs7931342, T) was positively associated with an increased Gleason score (P = 0.04, OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.02-4.55). Patients carrying TG on 17q24 (rs1859962, G) were negatively associated with an increased body mass index (BMI) (P = 0.03, OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.21-0.92) while those with AG on HNF1B (rs4430796, A) were more likely to have PSA increase (P = 0.002). Conclusion: Our study suggests that 11p15 (rs7127900, A) could be a susceptibility locus associated with PCa in Northern Chinese. Genotype TG on 11q13 (rs7931342, T) could be related to an increased Gleason score, AG on HNF1B (rs4430796, A) could be associated with PSA increase, and TG on 17q24 (rs1859962, G) could be negatively associated with an increased BMI in Chinese men with PCa.

        Virtual Queue Based QoS Layered Vertical Mapping in Wireless Networks

        Wireless communication is one of most active areas in modern communication researches, QoS (Quality of Service) assurance is very important for wireless communication systems design, especially for applications such as streaming video etc., which requires strict QoS assurance. The modern wireless networks multi-layer protocol stack structure results in QoS metrics layered and acting in cascade and QoS metrics vertical mapping between protocol layers. Based on virtual buffer between protocol layers and queuing technology, a unified layered QoS mapping framework is proposed in this paper, in which we first propose virtual queue concept, give a novelty united neighboring protocol layers QoS metric mapping framework, and analysis method based on dicerete-time Markov chain, and numerical results show that our proposed framework represents a significant improvement over previous model.
