Housewives residing in the Kyongsang-Buk-do area were surveyed to determine their ownership of Korean traditional kitchen appliances and their usages. A breakdown of the appliances for the survey was as follows: 16 tableware, 17 household utensils, 15 heating utensils, 14 ceramic and earthen pottery, 6 stone utensils, 9 cooking utensils, 9 utensils made of the dried bamboo and bush clover, and 13 dining tables ("sang"). The types of the appliances with the largest ownerships and most frequently used were as follows: The jeopsi was most frequently owned, followed by the daejeop and the jaengban. The most frequently used item was the jubal,, followed by the daejeop and the jeopsi. Among the wooden utensils, bangmangi was most frequently owned, followed by the chanjang, the che, the doe, mal and hop. The most frequently used household utensil was the chanjang, followed by the takjasang and the doe, mal and hop. The utensil the most people owned for heating was the jujeonja, followed by the seoksoe, the musoesot and the siru. The most frequently used utensil for heating was the jujeonja, the musoesot and the seoksoe, in the order. As for the ceramic and earthen pottery, hangari and dok were owned and used most frequently. The maetdol and the jeolgu, though very low in their ownership rate, were most frequently owned items among the stoned utensils. The kal and the doma were the most frequently owned and used cooking utensils. The sokuri, and the chaeban and the baguni were the most frequently owned among the utensils made of the dried bamboo, bush clover and straw, while the sokuri was used the most frequently, followed by the chaeban and the jori. Among the dining tables, the kyojasang was the item most frequently owned, followed by the seonban and the chaeksangban, while the wonban was the most frequently used, followed by the kyojasang and the chaeksangban.

This study was conducted to investigated the major characteristics of genetically modified rice of "Milyang 204" originated from Dongjinbyeo compared to a non-transgenic rice varieties Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo. Basta resistant transgenic rice lines carrying bar gene produced by the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute were evaluated for their agronomic characters. The transgenic Japonica rice of "Milyang 204" showed inferior phenotypic traits compared to a non-transgenic rice variety Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo. On the basis of UPOV (Union Internationale Pour la Protaection des Obtentions Vegetables) and NSMO(National Seed Management Office) the transgenic "Milyang 204" showed difference in some traits out of some agronomic traits, such as leaf color, angle of flag leaf, number of spikelets, culm length, white core and white belly compared to the nontransgenic varieties rice.
Effects of vibration on the proteome expression of anterior cruciate ligament cells.

<P>Recent reports have suggested that vibration has beneficial effects on knee healing response; however, the biomechanism of these beneficial effects still need to be determined on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) cell level. In this study, we applied a 20 Hz vibration to ACL cells, which produced a 20% increase (P < 0.001) in cell activity and 17% increase (P < 0.001) in intracellular sulfated glycosaminoglycan levels. In the 20 Hz vibration-stimulated ACL cell group, eight up-regulated (100 300%) protein spots were identified compared with the control group by proteomics analysis. Among these proteins, Annexin A2 and Prolyl 4 hydroxylase (PH4B) were shown to have a 71% and 16% higher expression, respectively, in the 20 Hz vibration-stimulated ACL cell group by Western blotting (P < 0.001). These results indicate that vibration produces a positive cellular environment, and Annexin A2 and prolyl 4 hydroxylase are expected to help ligament repair and ACL cell proliferation by controlling cell membrane and extracellular matrix formation.</P>
Progress of Tissue Adhesives Based on Polymers

In recent years, polymer-based tissue adhesives (TAs) have been developed as an alternative to sutures to close and seal incisions or wounds owing to their ease of use, rapid application time, low cost, and minimal tissue damage. Although significant research is being conducted to develop new TAs with improved performances using different strategies, the applications of TAs are limited by several factors, such as weak adhesion strength and poor mechanical properties. Therefore, the next-generation advanced TAs with biomimetic and multifunctional properties should be developed. Herein, we review the requirements, adhesive performances, characteristics, adhesive mechanisms, applications, commercial products, and advantages and disadvantages of proteins- and synthetic polymer-based TAs. Furthermore, future perspectives in the field of TA-based research have been discussed.
