Political Ties and Firm Performance in China: Evidence from a Quantile Regression

Whether political ties enhance or weaken firm performance has been widely investigated in a number of studies, including some on China. Based on a database of non-financial A-share listed firms from 2004 to 2012, we study the effects of political ties on firm performance within a quantile regression framework. We find that there is a positive relationship between political ties and economic performance, but that it is diminishing with respect to firm performance. Political ties appear particularly important for weaker firms.

COVID-19 is an emerging disease that poses a severe threat to global public health. As such, there is an urgent demand for vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Here, we describe a virus-like nanoparticle candidate vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 produced by an E. coli expression system. The fusion protein of a truncated ORF2-encoded protein of aa 439~608 (p170) from hepatitis E virus CCJD-517 and the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein from SARSCoV-2 were expressed, purified and characterized. The antigenicity and immunogenicity of p170-RBD were evaluated in vitro and in Kunming mice. Our investigation revealed that p170-RBD selfassembled into approximately 24 nm virus-like particles, which could bind to serum from vaccinated people (p < 0.001) and receptors on cells. Immunization with p170-RBD induced the titer of IgG antibody vaccine increased from 14 days post-immunization and was significantly enhanced after a booster immunization at 28 dpi, ultimately reaching a peak level on 42 dpi with a titer of 4.97 log10. Pseudovirus neutralization tests showed that the candidate vaccine induced a strong neutralizing antibody response in mice. In this research, we demonstrated that p170-RBD possesses strong antigenicity and immunogenicity and could be a potential candidate for use in future SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development.

During the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution achievedaccumulation of capital through continuous technological improvements. The urbanindustrialization was thereby booming but finally came to an end, leaving a greatamount of industrial heritage in cities. With the improved quality of life, themasses have paid increasing attention to the ecological environment, so theregenerated industrial heritage has come under the spotlight. Following the growingeconomic development around the world, the resource recycling of industrial heritagehas become a global hot topic. This paper expounds the formation and regeneratingmeans of industrial heritage, and analyzes the development history and regeneratingforms of the three mature industrial heritage parks, including the Pocheon Art Valley,Beijing 798 ArtDist and the Ashio Copper Mine. Due to the complicated spatial and time spans of industrial heritageregeneration, this paper takes the Hanyang Zao Advertising Creative IndustryPark in Wuhan, China as an example. It analyzes the status quo of “Hanyang Zao”through data investigation and file query and conducts an interactivecomparison with the North Duisburg Landscape Park, a successful transformationof industrial heritage by Peter Latz. Through studying the German version designmethods of resource recycling, this paper puts forward a feasible design planon the resource recycling of the Hanyang Zao Advertising Creative Industry Park,hoping to provide it as an easy reference for industrial heritage regenerationin many cities of China.

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of perfectionism in the relationship between self-management and performance confidence of Chinese students majoring in dance. Reliability analysis, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and structural model analysis were conducted. These results suggest that Chinese students majoring in dance behave confidently in dance performances because they are constantly striving and thoroughly managing and pursuing perfection.In future research, various discussions should be made on psychological problems that may affect performance confidence, difficulties in studying abroad, problems of Korean language ability, and adaptation to Korea.

In view of the defects of traditional droop control with differential regulation and the problems of uneven power sharing, slow regulation speed and complex controller design in some distributed secondary control methods, this paper proposes a secondary control strategy of microgrid based on distributed consensus algorithm. It uses the control quantity information of the distributed generations on the adjacent nodes collected by the communication network to obtain the secondary regulation quantity and send it to the droop control to shift the droop curve. After the load fluctuation occurs, the system can not only realize the rapid and stable frequency and voltage regulation, but also ensure the reasonable sharing of the output power of the distributed generations involved in the regulation. Finally, a model was built on MATLAB/Simulink platform to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

In an attempt to shift the optimal pH of the xylanase B (XynB) from Aspergillus niger towards alkalinity, target mutation sites were selected by alignment between Aspergillus niger xylanase B and other xylanases that have alkalophilic pH optima that highlight charged residues in the eight-residues-longer loop in the alkalophilic xylanase. Multiple engineered XynB mutants were created by site-directed mutagenesis with substitutions Q164K and Q164K+D117N. The variant XynB-117 had the highest optimum pH (at 5.5), which corresponded to a basic 0.5 pH unit shift when compared with the wild-type enzyme. However, the optimal pH of the XynB- 164 mutation was not changed, similar to the wild type. These results suggest that the residues at positions 164 and 117 in the eight-residues-longer loop and the cleft``s edge are important in determining the pH optima of XynB from Aspergillus niger.

In acute lung injury, two subsets of lung macrophages exist in the alveoli: tissue-resident alveolar macrophages (AMs) and monocyte-derived alveolar macrophages (MDMs). However, it is unclear whether these 2 subsets of macrophages have different functions and characteristics during the recovery phase. RNA-sequencing of AMs and MDMs from the recovery period of LPS-induced lung injury mice revealed their differences in proliferation, cell death, phagocytosis, inflammation and tissue repair. Using flow cytometry, we found that AMs showed a higher ability to proliferate, whereas MDMs expressed a larger amount of cell death. We also compared the ability of phagocytosing apoptotic cells and activating adaptive immunity and found that AMs have a stronger ability to phagocytose, while MDMs are the cells that activate lymphocytes during the resolving phase. By testing surface markers, we found that MDMs were more prone to the M1 phenotype, but expressed a higher level of pro-repairing genes. Finally, analysis of a publicly available set of single-cell RNA-sequencing data on bronchoalveolar lavage cells from patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection validated the double-sided role of MDMs. Blockade of inflammatory MDM recruitment using CCR2−/− mice effectively attenuates lung injury. Therefore, AMs and MDMs exhibited large differences during recovery. AMs are long-lived M2-like tissue-resident macrophages that have a strong ability to proliferate and phagocytose. MDMs are a paradoxical group of macrophages that promote the repair of tissue damage despite being strongly pro-inflammatory early in infection, and they may undergo cell death as inflammation fades. Preventing the massive recruitment of inflammatory MDMs or promoting their transition to pro-repairing phenotype may be a new direction for the treatment of acute lung injury.

Our research team combined humanoid robots with intelligent lower limb prostheses to study the dynamic characteristics of intelligent lower extremity prostheses for disabled people in the walking process, and proposed a biped robot with heterogeneous legs (BRHL). This paper proposes a new virtual-real inverted pendulum system model to unify the models for both single support phase and double support phase in walking process and builds a special simulation platform which can acquire the real-time center of mass (COM) trajectory. Initially, a gravity-compensated inverted pendulum model was built and improved the stability of gait, a natural ZMP trajectory improved the anthropomorphism of the gait. Furthermore, in double support phase, a virtual inverted pendulum model was established and a virtual-real inverted pendulum model was proposed and used to plan the gait of both single support phase and double support phase in the walking process. Additionally, the joint angles were obtained by inverse kinematics; the stability of the system was analyzed to be feasible and effective by phase trajectories. A special ADAMS simulation platform was built to simulate the walking process and acquire real-time COM trajectory. The feasibility of the gait planning was also verified. Finally, the trajectory of COM was optimized based on the minimum energy criterion according to the geodesic equation.
