Integral Imaging Monitors with an Enlarged Viewing Angle

Enlarging the horizontal viewing angle is an important feature of integral imaging monitors. Thus far, the horizontal viewing angle has been enlarged in different ways, such as by changing the size of the elemental images or by tilting the lens array in the capture and reconstruction stages. However, these methods are limited by the microlenses used in the capture stage and by the fact that the images obtained cannot be easily projected into different displays. In this study, we upgrade our previously reported method, called SPOC 2.0. In particular, our new approach, which can be called SPOC 2.1, enlarges the viewing angle by increasing the density of the elemental images in the horizontal direction and by an appropriate application of our transformation and reshape algorithm. To illustrate our approach, we have calculated some high-viewing angle elemental images and displayed them on an integral imaging monitor.

The City of Lipa in the province of Batangas in the Philippines is rapidly urbanizing. Business establishments, population and demand for decent housing have been steadily increasing since the 1980s. Rapid urbanization can exert pressure on a community’s limited resources. The limited amount of land available for development in Lipa City heightens the need for efficient allocation of land to the sectors that can enhance economic growth. This study provides the city government with an analytical tool to systematically determine the potential of the sectors to improve the economy of the city in terms of output, earnings and business tax collection. Identification of which sector(s) to focus on and an estimate of its possible impact to the local economy translates to effective economic development plans that can attain target progress and openness to trade, not just for the LGU but the nation as well. A 10 x 10 sector transaction table was constructed using the "rows only" method and was balanced using the Friedlander method. This table was used to analyze the economic structure of Lipa as well as the interlinkages of its sectors. The study shows that manufacturing is the dominant contributor to the total output of Lipa and that the trade sector has strong interlinkages with other industries.

Three-Dimensional Imaging and Display through Integral Photography

Here, we present a review of the proposals and advances in the field of three-dimensional (3D) imaging acquisition and display made in the last century. The most popular techniques are based on the concept of stereoscopy. However, stereoscopy does not provide real 3D experience, and produces discomfort due to the conflict between convergence and accommodation. For this reason, we focus this paper on integral imaging, which is a technique that permits the codification of 3D information in an array of 2D images obtained from different perspectives. When this array of elemental images is placed in front of an array of microlenses, the perspectives are integrated producing 3D images with full parallax and free of the convergence-accommodation conflict. In the paper we describe the principles of this technique, together with some new applications of integral imaging.

Do school-based nutrition interventions improve the eating behavior of school-age children?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Filipino children aged 6–10 yrs are consuming poor quantities and quality of food based on the 2013 Philippine National Nutrition Survey. During these years healthy eating habits must be formed through family influence. Within this background, a complete package of nutrition intervention—feeding and nutrition classes, was pilot tested in selected schools to determine 1) changes in nutrition attitude and behavior and 2) food intake of schoolchildren after the intervention. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was used in the study. School children aged 7–9 yrs enrolled in selected Philippine public elementary schools and their mothers/caregivers were the study participants. Profile and socio-demographic data were collected from each participant at baseline. The nutrition behavior and food intake of children were determined using the modified Child and Diet Evaluation Tool (CADET) and the 24-h food recall form, respectively. Data were analyzed using Stata version 15. RESULTS: No significant differences in characteristics were found among the 339 child-mother pairs in the 4 study groups. The modified CADET recorded improved mean attitude scores of children ranging from 22 to 24 points at endline in the group receiving both lunch feeding and nutrition education classes (group 3). The perceived better behavior of children was reported by their mothers in terms of increased intake of milk and vegetables and decreased consumption of sugar. These improvements were supported by the actual food intake of children obtained from the 24-h food recall. CONCLUSIONS: Family involvement, particularly of mothers/caregivers, appeared to be an important factor in shaping the children"s eating behavior. An intervention package with lunch feeding and nutrition classes resulted in a substantial improvement in children"s behavior and actual food intake with increased levels of vegetables and milk while lowering sugar consumption. The adoption of the intervention package in public elementary schools should therefore be pursued.

Towards 3D Television Through Fusion of Kinect and Integral-Imaging Concepts

<P>We report a new procedure for the capture and processing of light proceeding from 3D scenes of some cubic meters in size. Specifically we demonstrate that with the information provided by a kinect device it is possible to generate an array of microimages ready for their projection onto an integral-imaging monitor. We illustrate our proposal with some imaging experiment in which the final result are 3D images displayed with full parallax.</P>
