A 1-year old, intact male Jin-do dog with ataxia, hypersalivation and anorexia was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. Ivermectin toxicosis was diagnosed by the history taking, clinical signs, physical examination and neurological examination. After therapy with intravenous fluid and lipid emulsion administration, the clinical signs were found to have significantly improved.

Acanthopanax trifoliatus (L) Merr (AT) is commonly used as an herbal medicine and edible plant in some areas of China and other Asian countries. AT is thought to have anticancer effects, but potential mechanisms remain unknown. To assess the anticancer properties of AT, we exposed prostate cancer cells to AT extracts and assessed cell proliferation and signaling pathways. An ethanol extract of AT was suspended in water followed by sequential extraction with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. PC-3 cells were treated with different concentrations of each extract and cell viability was determined by the MTT and trypan blue exclusion assays. The ethyl acetate extract of the ethanol extract had a stronger inhibitory effect on growth and a stronger stimulatory effect on apoptosis than any of the other extracts. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the ethyl acetate extract suppressed the transcriptional activity of NF-${\kappa}B$, increased the level of caspase-3, and decreased the levels of phospho-Erk1/2 and phospho-Akt. This is the first report on the anticancer activity of AT in cultured human prostate cancer cells. The results suggest that AT can provide a plant-based medicine for the treatment or prevention of prostate cancer.

Background: Many clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate sorafenib for the treatment of advanced NSCLC, but the results for efficacy have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of sorafenib in patients with advanced NSCLC in more detail by meta-analysis. Methods: This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed after searching PubMed, EMBASE, ASCO Abstracts, ESMO Abstracts, and the proceedings of major conferences for relevant clinical trials. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of the trials. Outcomes analysis were disease control rate (DCR), progression- free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) and major toxicity. Subgroup analysis was conducted according to sorafenib monotherapy, in combination with chemotherapy or EGFR-TKI to investigate the preferred therapy strategy. Results: Results reported from 6 RCTs involving 2, 748 patients were included in the analysis. Compared to sorafenib-free group, SBT was not associated with higher DCR (RR 1.31 (0.96- 1.79), p=0.09), PFS (HR 0.82 (0.66-1.02), p=0.07) and OS (HR 1.01 (0.92-1.12), p=0.77). In terms of subgroup results, sorafenib monotherapy was associated with significant superior DCR and longer PFS, but failed to show advantage with regard to OS. Grade 3 or greater sorafenib-related adverse events included fatigue, hypertension, diarrhea, oral mucositis, rash and HFSR. Conclusions: SBT was revealed to yield no improvement in DCR, PFS and OS. However, sorafenib as monotherapy showed some activity in NSCLC. Further evaluation may be considered in subsets of patients who may benefit from this treatment. Sorafenib combined inhibition therapy should be limited unless the choice of platinum-doublet regimen, administration sequence or identification of predictive biomarkers are considered to receive better anti-tumor activity and prevention of resistance mechanisms.

Among the antimicrobial peptides, abaecin is rich in proline content and plays a vital role in insect innate im mune defense. Here, the full-length gene of abaecin from the bumblebee Bombus lantschouensis was cloned, and its expression profiles for different tissues, developmental stages and reproductive statuses were analyzed by RTqPCR. Meanwhile, the responses of abaecin to a bacterium (Escherichia coli) and a fungus (Beauveria bassiana) were tested. The full length of abaecin cDNA was 470 bp, and the open reading frame (ORF) was 258 bp, encoding a polypeptide of 85 amino acids. The abaecin gene consists of three exons and two introns. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Bombus ignitus was the closest species to B. lantschouensis base on putative Abaecin protein sequence. Expression analysis showed that abaecin was expressed broadly in different tissues, with the highest expression in fat bodies and extremely low expression in antennae. Regarding developmental stage, low expression of abacein was detected in eggs and larvae, and high expression was detected in pupal stages. The highest expression was observed at the Pw pupal stage (pupae with an unpigmented body cuticle and white eyes), and the expression then decreased from the Pp (pupae with pink eyes) to the Pdd (dark-eye pupae with a dark-pigmented cuticle) stages. In addition, the expression of abaecin was higher in egg-laying than in non-egglaying female bumblebees. Both E. coli and B. bassiana infections induced the expression of abaecin. Our results indicated that the abaecin gene plays important roles in the development, reproduction and immune responses of bumblebees. During the artificial rearing of bumblebees, a good environment should be created to avoid infection with bacteria or fungi.

Choroquine (CQ) and valproic acid (VPA) have been extensively studied for biological effects. Here, we focused on efficacy of combined CQ and VPA on osteosarcoma cell lines. Viability of osteosarcoma cell lines (U20S and HOS) was analyzed by MTT assay. Apoptotic assays and colony formation assays were also applied. ROS generation and Western Blotting were performed to determine the mechanism of CQ and VPA combination in the process of apoptosis. The viability of different osteosarcoma cell lines significantly decreased after CQ and VPA combination treatment compared with either drug used alone, and apoptosis was increased significantly. ROS generation was triggered leading to expression of apoptosis related genes being increased and of antiapoptotic related genes being decreased. From our data shown here, CQ and VPA combination treatment in vitro enhanced cytotoxicy to osteosarcoma cells.
Terpenoid composition and the anticancer activity of Acanthopanax trifoliatus

The petroleum ether and ethyl acetate fractions of extract from an edible and medicinal plant Acanthopanax trifoliatus were found to show significant inhibitory effects against SF-268, MCF-7, HepG2 and NCIH460 cancer cells. Two new ursane-type triterpenoids, acantrifoic acid C (1) and acantrifoic acid D (2), along with five known triterpenoids (3–7) and eight known diterpenoids (8–15) were obtained from these two fractions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report concerning the isolation of compounds (5–12, 14, 15) from A. trifoliatus. Among all the isolated compounds, 3, 5 and 8 from the ethyl acetate fraction showed the strongest inhibitory effects against cancer cells, while 12 and 13 from the petroleum ether fraction showed moderate activities. These terpenoid compounds may be responsible for the anticancer activities of A. trifoliatus. Our study provides the first evidence that terpenoids from A. trifoliatus exert anticancer activities and indicates that A. trifoliatus may be a useful edible plant for further development of anticancer health supplement.

The agricultural extension programs have been historically undergoing developmental evolution in any cultural settings. As economic, social and political conditions and circumtances change, which affect agricultural and related industries, rural people and rural society, the program emphasis and contents of the agricultural extension service have to be adjusted, and expanded in most cases, to meet the needs of rural people as clientele of the service. Because of the usual problems of adaptation and transfer of alien cultural complexes, there have been noted many variations in the agricultural extension sevice in terms of organization, personnel, and functions according to different countries which, for the most, have adopted the social system from the United States Cooperative Extension Service. The Korean Agriculural Extension Service is not the exception. In this connection, however, we must pay our serious attention to the Cooperative Extension Service when and if we try to critically examine developmental problems of our agricultural extension service. In view of the very rapid national development in Korea, it has been proposed that the Korean Agricultural Extension Service has to adjust its educational program contents. In other words, the program contents should be gradually shifted from the historically-determined strong emphasis on the biological agricultural or food production program. As one of the future and development-oriented program area categories is the so-called "Public Affairs Education Program", which is one of the broader "Social and Economic Development" program area of the agricultural extension service. It aims at the human development in terms of ⒜ enhancement of decision-making capability, and ⒝ social education for citizenship cultivation. Consequently, the authors tried to critically examine ⒜ developmental evolution of the programs of the agricultural extension service, in general, ⒝ fundamental significance of the public affairs education program, ⒞ beneffts and costs of the public affairs education program, and ⒟ elements of strategy for the planning and implementation of the public affairs education program. The second author and Jai Won Chung have already proposed a development problem relating to the Korean Agricultural Extension Service. That is, the activation of the now-defunct "Agricultural Extension Program Planning Committee (County)." Accordingly, the public affairs extension program should be considered the second development and adjustment effort for the Korean Agricultural Extension Service from the developmental perspective.
