<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Vascular calcification is prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease and leads to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although several reports have implicated mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, little is known about the potential role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the process of vascular calcification. This study investigated the effect of α-lipoic acid (ALA), a naturally occurring antioxidant that improves mitochondrial function, on vascular calcification <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. Calcifying vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) treated with inorganic phosphate (Pi) exhibited mitochondrial dysfunction, as demonstrated by decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production, the disruption of mitochondrial structural integrity and concurrently increased production of reactive oxygen species. These Pi-induced functional and structural mitochondrial defects were accompanied by mitochondria-dependent apoptotic events, including release of cytochrome <I>c</I> from the mitochondria into the cytosol, subsequent activation of caspase-9 and -3, and chromosomal DNA fragmentation. Intriguingly, ALA blocked the Pi-induced VSMC apoptosis and calcification by recovery of mitochondrial function and intracellular redox status. Moreover, ALA inhibited Pi-induced down-regulation of cell survival signals through the binding of growth arrest-specific gene 6 (Gas6) to its cognate receptor Axl and subsequent Akt activation, resulting in increased survival and decreased apoptosis. Finally, ALA significantly ameliorated vitamin D<SUB>3</SUB>-induced aortic calcification and mitochondrial damage in mice. Collectively, the findings suggest ALA attenuates vascular calcification by inhibiting VSMC apoptosis through two distinct mechanisms; preservation of mitochondrial function <I>via</I> its antioxidant potential and restoration of the Gas6/Axl/Akt survival pathway.</P>

<P>This paper proposes a quench detection method applied to a HTS coil and also discusses the results of tests on an HTS BSCCO wire and an HTS YBCO coil. A series-type thermocouple was fabricated to detect quench, where several thermocouples were welded in series. As the series-type thermocouple has many points of detection, variation in temperature was detected at each point by using thermo-electromotive force. The feasibility of the proposed method was investigated through the quench detection tests on the YBCO coil. This method has advantages such as a simple structure and cost effectiveness and also protects the HTS coil by detecting partial quench and its propagation.</P>
High-performance nanopattern triboelectric generator by block copolymer lithography

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Large-area nanopatterning is introduced on a flexible gold substrate by block copolymer (BCP) lithography. We fabricate ultrahigh power energy harvesting nanogenerators based on contact-electrification principle exploiting the effective contact area enhancement by block copolymer lithography. Owing to the facile and effective surface area enhancement by BCP nanopatterning, significant enhancement of triboelectric charge induction is attained. Output currents from TENG increased at least 16 times after BCP nanopatterning. This nanogenerator can generate remarkably high output voltage and current, which can directly light up 504 serially connected LEDs. The resultant nanogenerator attains the maximum instantaneous current of 1.6mA and output power of 93.2W/m<SUP>2</SUP>. Electrical energy generated by single cycle of impact force is 0.54mJ, and the average electrical energy is 114.89mW. <P>Regulation of the formation and function of bone-resorbing osteoclasts (OCs) is a key to understanding the pathogenesis of skeletal disorders. Gene-targeting studies have shown that the RANK signaling pathway plays a critical role in OC differentiation and function. Although pharmaceutical blockade of RANK may be a viable strategy for preventing bone destruction, RANK is implicated in multiple biological processes. Recently, a cytoplasmic motif of RANK was identified that may be specifically involved in OC differentiation. Here, we developed a cell-permeable inhibitor termed the RANK receptor inhibitor (RRI), which targets this motif. The RRI peptide blocked RANKL-induced OC formation from murine bone marrow-derived macrophages. Furthermore, RRI inhibited the resorptive function of OCs and induced OC apoptosis. Treatment with the peptide impaired downstream signaling of RANK linked to Vav3, Rac1, and Cdc42 and resulted in disruptions of the actin cytoskeleton in differentiated OCs. In addition, RRI blocked inflammation-induced bone destruction and protected against ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice. These data may be useful in the development of selective therapeutic agents for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone diseases.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Here we report an efficient catalyst design strategy to develop high performance Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Finely-dispersed Pt nanoclusters supported on microporous graphene-like 3D carbon (Pt/MGTC) having a Pt size of <I>ca.</I> 1.3nm were synthesized by zeolite template-based carbon synthesis and subsequent Pt impregnation. The Pt/MGTC catalyst demonstrated about 2 times higher ORR activity than that of commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Pt/MGTC showed relatively stable ORR performance, maintaining an activity higher than that of Pt/C. This performance enhancement of electrocatalytic ORR on Pt/MGTC was attributed to the significant increase of Pt active sites and the efficient charge transport in Pt/MGTC.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Highly-dispersed Pt nanoclusters supported on microporous graphene-like 3D carbon (Pt/MGTC) were synthesized. </LI> <LI> The Pt/MGTC led to improved catalytic performances for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction. </LI> <LI> This performance enhancement was attributed to many Pt active sites and efficient charge transport in Pt/MGTC. </LI> </UL> </P>
N-스크린 환경 하에서 신문사의 통합형 플랫폼에 대한 사용자 지불의사 연구

This paper investigated customers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for the integrated news platform, which is a paid digital news service provided by Korean newspapers. The integrated news platform has been widely employed and regarded as an alternative to recover dramatically decreasing sales of newspapers since N-Screen era began. This study employed a conjoint analysis to examine WTP for the integrated news platform and its attributes. According to the results, WPT for the integrated news platform was estimated as 4543.6 won, which is only 30.3% of the real price. Digitalized newspaper and premium news were found to be significant attributes explaining customers’ WTP. The results of this paper implies that present marketing strategies for the integrated news platform of Korean newspapers should be reconsidered and revised.

본 연구는 신문사의 디지털 유료화 콘텐츠 수익 모델 중 하나인 통합형 플랫폼의 사용의도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 확장된 통합기술 수용모델을 기초로 고찰했다. 통합형 플랫폼이란 종이신문의 디지털 판형, 프리미엄 뉴스 혹은 비하인드 뉴스, 그리고 부가정보 등을 한 데 묶어서 서비스 하는 유료 콘텐츠 상품을 일컫는다. 연구 결과, 사용 편의성, 사회적 영향, 오락적 동기 그리고 신문 정기 구독 여부는 통합형 플랫폼 사용의도에 정(正)적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석됐다. 반면 종이신문에 대한 만족도는 통합형 플랫폼 사용의도에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 종이신문은 통합형 플랫폼과 대체 관계에 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 한편, 고품질 기사에 대한 기대효과와 통합형 플랫폼 사용의도 간의 관계는 유의미하지 않았으며, 성별과 연령 그리고 뉴스 소비 습관과 언론사 홈페이지에 대한 만족도 역시 통합형 플랫폼 사용의도에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. This research examines factors affecting behavioral intention to use integrated platform (IP), which is one of the business models regarding paid digital contents, based on extended United Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2). IP is a service which is designed to make digital content charged. It combines digitalized format of newspaper, premium news or behind news, and additional information. The results of this paper show that effort expectancy, social influence and hedonic motivation have positive relationship with behavioral intention to use IP (BI). Satisfaction with newspaper shows negative relationship with BI, which means that newspaper and IP can be replaced with each other. Newspaper subscribers tend to have higher BI than non-subscribers. Performance expectancy, gender, age, and satisfaction with website do not have significant effect on BI.

This paper proposed a quench detection method applied to the HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) wire and the results of the test on a HTS BSCCO (Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) wire were discussed. A series type thermocouple was fabricated for the quench detection. Several thermocouples were welded in series connection, so the series type thermocouple has many detecting points. The temperature variation was detected at each point by using the thermo electromotive force. The feasibility of the proposed method was investigated through the quench detection tests for HTS BSCCO wire. Also, this method has several advantages such as simple structure and cost effectiveness.
