        Fast and effective methylene blue adsorption onto graphene oxide/amberlite nanocomposite: Evaluation and comparison of optimization techniques

        Since graphene is a miracle material of the 21st century, a considerable number of researchers have studied the oxidation of graphite to synthesize graphene oxide and its applications. In this study, polymeric resin (amberlite XAD7HP) supported graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite was synthesized successfully. Analytical methods, namely Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to characterize the new structure. Methylene blue (MB) solution was selected as a model discharged textile wastewater for adsorption application of synthesized nanocomposite. The adsorption data were modelled by response surface methodology (RSM), random forest (RF) and artificial neural networks (ANN) methods. The optimal condition parameters, which maximize the adsorption uptake capability, were determined by the genetic algorithm. Statistical errors and correlation coefficient values of each developed model were calculated independently to compare models’ performance. According to the results, the developed RF model outperformed the other models. On the other hand, the ANN model had the lowest correlation coefficient value among the models.

        활배근 피판의 임상적 응용

        Recently many kinds of musculocutaneous flap have been used in treatment of some difficult wounds. Considerable attention has been directed toward the use of the latissimus dorsi musculoctaneous flap as a pedicle flap or as a free flap. The latissimus dorsi muscle has its several distinct advantages. 1. It is supplied by a major large sized vessels and also by minor segmental vessels. 2. It has an exceptionally great range of are of rotation on either blood supply. 3. It has a large unit and quite broad, giving versatility to skin island oriented over it. 4. It is functionally expandable, because its functions are quickly recovered through the substitution of other muscles. We treated 5 cases of difficult wounds using with latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap from 1980 to 1982 in our hospital: one case of 5th metatarsal bone exposure caused by electrical burn with free flap, one case of post burn scar contracture of axilla with island flap, one case of midline pressure sore of back and two cases of scar contracture of back with “reverse” type myocutaneous flap.

      • Prognostic Role of Hepatoma-derived Growth Factor in Solid Tumors of Eastern Asia: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Hepatoma-derived growth factor (HDGF) is a novel jack-of-all-trades in cancer. Here we quantify the prognostic impact of this biomarker and assess how consistent is its expression in solid tumors. A comprehensive search strategy was used to search relevant literature updated on October 3, 2014 in PubMed, EMBASE and WEB of Science. Correlations between HDGF expression and clinicopathological features or cancer prognosis was analyzed. All pooled HRs or ORs were derived from random-effects models. Twenty-six studies, primarily in Eastern Asia, covering 2,803 patients were included in the analysis, all of them published during the past decade. We found that HDGF overexpression was significantly associated with overall survival (OS) ($HR_{OS}=2.35$, 95%CI=2.04-2.71, p<0.001) and disease free survival (DFS) ($HR_{DFS}=2.25$, 95%CI =1.81-2.79, p<0.001) in solid tumors, especially in non-small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Moreover, multivariate survival analysis showed that HDGF overexpression was an independent predictor of poor prognosis ($HR_{OS}=2.41$, 95%CI: 2.02-2.81, p<0.001; $HR_{DFS}=2.39$, 95%CI: 1.77-3.24, p<0.001). In addition, HDGF overexpression was significantly associated with tumor category (T3-4 versus T1-2, OR=2.12, 95%CI: 1.17-3.83, p=0.013) and lymph node status (N+ versus N-, OR=2.37, 95%CI: 1.31-4.29, p=0.03) in CCA. This study provides a comprehensive examination of the literature available on the association of HDGF overexpression with OS, DFS and some clinicopathological features in solid tumors. Meta-analysis results provide evidence that HDGF may be a new indicator of poor cancer prognosis. Considering the limitations of the eligible studies, other large-scale prospective trials must be conducted to clarify the prognostic value of HDGF in predicting cancer survival.

        Association between PM2.5 exposure and risk of Parkinson’s disease in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Taiwan: a nested case-control study

        OBJECTIVES: This cohort study investigated the correlation between Parkinson’s disease (PD) risk and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk under particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) exposure. METHODS: Data from the National Health Research Institutes of Taiwan were used in this study. The Environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan established an air quality monitoring network for monitoring Taiwan’s general air quality. COPD was indicated by at least 3 outpatient records and 1 hospitalization for COPD. After the implementation of age, sex, and endpoint matching at a 1:4 ratio, 137 patients and 548 patients were included in the case group and control group, respectively. Based on the 2005 World Health Organization (WHO) standards, monthly air particle concentration data were classified into the following 4 groups in analyses of exposure–response relationships: normal level, and 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the WHO level ([concentration ≥2]×25 μg/m3×number of exposure months). RESULTS: A multivariate logistic regression revealed that the 1.0 and 1.5 WHO level groups did not significantly differ from the normal level group, but the 2.0 WHO level did (odds ratio, 4.091; 95% confidence interval, 1.180 to 14.188; p=0.038). CONCLUSIONS: Elevated PM2.5 concentrations were significantly correlated with an increased risk of PD among patients with COPD. Furthermore, exposure to high PM2.5 levels can further increase the risk of PD.

        The Prevalence of Coexisting Lumbar Spondylosis and Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Study Design: A systematic review.Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of coexisting lumbar spondylosis (LS) and knee osteoarthritis (KOA), which has clinical implications on the screening, diagnosis, and management of orthopedic patients.Overview of Literature: Due to current global health trends, the number of affected patients is expected to increase substantially. However, no prior systematic reviews have discussed this topic.Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in June 2021 in the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases. Clinical and epidemiological studies that reported quantitative data on the prevalence of coexisting LS and KOA were included. Studies which reported data on only LS or KOA alone were excluded. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for LS or KOA were retrieved or calculated for meta-analysis. Fixed-effects and random-effects models were used, and statistical significance was considered when <i>p</i><0.05. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran’s Q test and the <i>I<sup>2</sup></i> statistic. Risk of bias was assessed using the MINORs (methodological index for nonrandomized studies) criteria.Results: This review included nine studies (5,758 patients). Four studies (4,164 patients) defined KOA and LS by a Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade of ≥2 and were included in the meta-analysis. Two other studies defined KOA and LS by a joint space narrowing grade of ≥2. The remaining three studies reported other outcomes. The combined ORs of having KOA of KL grade ≥2 due to LS was 1.75 (95% CI, 1.22–2.50; <i>p</i>=0.002), while the combined OR of having LS of KL grade ≥2 due to KOA was 1.84 (95% CI, 1.23–2.77; <i>p</i>=0.003).Conclusions: In patients with either KOA or LS, the odds of having a concurrent knee-spine presentation are significantly increased. This may have implications for clinical decision-making and treatment strategies. Further high-level studies with larger patient populations are required to confirm these results in specific populations.

        Comparison of Oncoplastic Breast-Conserving Surgery and Breast- Conserving Surgery Alone: A Meta-Analysis

        Purpose: The use of oncoplastic reconstruction for breastconserving surgery (BCS) extends benefits beyond merely minimizing poor cosmetic results. However, the feasibility and oncological safety of oncoplastic surgery (OPS) are controversial. Methods: This meta-analysis aimed to compare the short-term and long-term oncological outcomes of BCS alone and BCS plus OPS. Relevant studies published before July 2017 in the Embase, the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were screened and collected. The meta-analysis was performed using STATA software (Stata Corp.). Results: A total of 3,789 patients from 11 studies were included, with 2,691 patients in the BCS-alone group and 1,098 patients in the BCS plus OPS group. The demographics were similar between both groups, and no significant difference was observed in pathological T and N stages between the two groups. Re-excision was less common (relative risk [RR], 0.66; p=0.009) and the positive-margin rate was lower, but not significantly (RR, 0.83; p=0.191), in the BCS plus OPS group than in the BCS-alone group. The local and distal recurrence rates were similar in both groups. Both disease-free survival (hazard ratio [HR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.96– 1.49; p=0.112) and overall survival (HR, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.76– 1.69; p=0.527) did not differ between the two groups. Conclusion: A combination of BCS and OPS is preferred over BCS alone for decreasing re-excisions and provides similar long-term survival as BCS alone in patients with breast cancer.

        Theoretical Studies on Mechanism and Kinetics of the Hydrogen-Abstraction Reaction of CF<sub>3</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CHO with OH Radicals

        The hydrogen abstraction reaction of $CF_3CH_2CHO$ + OH has been studied theoretically by dual-level direct dynamics method. Two stable conformers, trans- and cis-$CF_3CH_2CHO$, have been located, and there are four distinct OH hydrogen-abstraction channels from t-$CF_3CH_2CHO$ and two channels from c-$CF_3CH_2CHO$. The required potential energy surface information for the kinetic calculation was obtained at the MCG3-MPWB//M06-2X/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The rate constants, which were calculated using improved canonical transitionstate theory with small-curvature tunneling correction (ICVT/SCT) were fitted by a four-parameter Arrhenius equation. It is shown that the reaction proceeds predominantly via the H-abstraction from the -CHO group over the temperature range 200-2000 K. The calculated rate constants were in good agreement with the experimental data between 263 and 358 K.

        Nugget Formation and Its Mechanism of Resistance Spot Welded Joints in DP600 Dual-Phase and DC54D Ultralow Carbon Steel

        Resistance spot welded joints in different configurations of DP600 and DC54D were investigated to elucidate thenugget formation process and mechanical properties of the resultant joints. Results show that, when the weldingtime was less than 4 cycles, the fusion zone (FZ) was not formed, but the heat-affected zone (HAZ) occurred with a“butterfly” shape. In 4 cycles, the FZ in dissimilar sheets occurred with an “abnormal butterfly” shape because of nuggetshift. When the welding time increased to 14 cycles, the FZ exhibited a “bread loaf” shape and the weld shifted to“dog bones.” The nugget can be divided into three regions, namely, FZ, HAZ1, and HAZ2, and the FZ consisted oflath martensite. The micro hardness of DP600 FZ was lower than that of HAZ because of the dilution of DC54D. The failure mode of B changed from interfacial failure to plug failure during the nugget formation process. The tensile-shear load of sound weld is 6.375, 6.016, and 19.131 kN.

        Machining model of position-attitude in Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) of high-precision off-axis aspheric optical elements

        Two machining position-attitude model including Parent mirror Coordinate Position-Attitude Model (PCPAM) and Child mirror Coordinate Position-Attitude Model (CCPAM) are proposed for the fabrication of off-axis aspheric based on the manufacturing characteristics of off-axis aspheric and Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) technology. The machining ability, machining difficulty and machining accuracy of the two models are researched theoretically, and the simulated results of an off-axis mirror demonstrate that CCPAM is better than PCPAM over all those three aspects. An off-axis aspheric which has the same parameters as simulated was figured by MRF and the final accuracy is 14 nm RMS after two runs costing about 9 hours. The experiment testified the validity of CCPAM in the MRF process of off-axis aspheric, and indicates that more benefit can be obtained when CCPAM is adopted to manufacture an off-axis aspheric in MRF.

        Surgical correction of cleft lip lower-lip deformity: a report of three cases

        Cleft lip lower-lip deformity is a secondary deformity in patients who underwent primary cheiloplasty of the upper lip, characterized by an enlarged and anteriorly rotated lower lip. In these cases, soft-tissue imbalances remain even after skeletal correction with orthognathic surgery, and additional soft tissue treatment is required for lip harmony and esthetic facial balance in CLP (cleft lip palate) patients. This study describes three cases of trans-verse myomucosal excision of the lower lip for correction of cleft lip lower-lip deformity to restore facial esthetic balance. Each patient underwent orthognathic surgery, rhinoplasty, or upper lip revision cheiloplasty according to condition. Postoperatively, volume of the lower lip decreased and lip harmony was improved in all three patients. The surgeon should fully understand the anatomical structure around the lips and be able to evaluate over-all harmony of the soft tissue. When a lower lip deformity is present, careful surgical planning and execution are important for each patient.
