<P>We report the observation of band-like transport from printed polymer thin films at room temperature. This was achieved from donor-acceptor type thiophene-thiazole copolymer that was carefully designed to enhance the planarity of the backbone and the resulting transfer integral between the macromolecules. Due to the strong molecular interaction, the printed polymer film exhibited extremely low trap density comparable to that of molecular single crystals. Moreover, the energy barrier height for charge transport could be readily reduced with the aid of electric field, which led formation of extended electron states for band-like charge transport at room temperature.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2015/jacsat.2015.137.issue-25/jacs.5b04253/production/images/medium/ja-2015-04253w_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja5b04253'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Purpose: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) has a poor prognosis. Abiraterone acetate (AA), enzalutamide, and chemotherapy are first-line treatments for patients with mCRPC. This study examined prognostic factors for AA response in the form of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics throughout androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) in chemonaïve patients with mCRPC. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively included data from 34 chemonaïve patients with mCRPC who had received AA at some point between January 2017 and December 2018. We separated patients into two study arms according to the decrease in PSA percentages after use of AA for 3 months. We correlated PSA kinetics parameters with response and compared the two study groups with respect to PSA kinetics. Results: The patients’ median age was 77 years. In the total group of patients, 64% had a response to AA, whereas 35% did not. The ratio of the PSA level at nadir to the level during ADT was significantly higher in the AA-sensitive group (19.78 vs. 1.03, p=0.019). Conclusions: Patients who experienced a dramatic change in PSA level during ADT were more likely to be resistant to AA after progression to mCRPC. Chemotherapy rather than AA might be more suitable as a first-line treatment for these patients.

<P>The influence of alkyl side chains on the crystallinity of semiconducting copolymer films and their sub-bandgap density-of-states (DOS), the latter being closely related to the stability and the device performance of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), is investigated. Three different poly(hexathiophene-alt-bithiazole) (PHTBTz) based polymer semiconductors, with identical backbones but different side chain positions and lengths, were synthesized. The crystallinity examined by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) strongly depends on the number, position, and length of each type of alkyl side chain attached to the thiophene and thiazole copolymer backbones. Also, the sub-bandgap trap DOS distributions were extracted by performing multiple-frequency capacitance–voltage (MF-CV) spectroscopy on the field effect devices. The relationship between film crystallinity and trap DOS in the field-effect transistors can be interpreted in terms of the complex interplay between the number, position, and length of each alkyl side chain for efficient π–π stacking. In particular, the number and position of the alkyl side chain attached to the polymer backbone significantly affects the device performance. Poly(tetryloctylhexathiophene-alt-dioctylbithiazole) (PHTBTz-C8) exhibits the best electrical performance among the different semiconductors synthesized, with a relatively low bulk trap density of ∼2.0 × 1020 cm–3 eV–1 as well as reasonable hole mobility of ∼0.25 cm2 V–1 s–1. The microstructural analyses of this organic material strongly suggest that the short π–π stacking distance induces strong interaction between adjacent polymer backbones, which in turn results in enhanced electrical properties.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/cmatex/2013/cmatex.2013.25.issue-9/cm400592b/production/images/medium/cm-2013-00592b_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/cm400592b'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

YKL-40, a secreted glycoprotein, may serve as an autoantigen, which mediates multipleinflammatory diseases and cancers. A high YKL-40 serum level is correlated with metastasisand poor survival in a variety of human cancers. However, the role of YKL-40 in dogs is stillunder evaluation. Herein, we examined the associations between plasma YKL-40 level andYKL-40 autoantibody (YAA) titers with malignancy and prognosis in canine cancer. Plasmalevels of YKL-40 in healthy dogs (n = 20) and in dogs (n = 82) with cancer were evaluatedusing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Our results indicated that plasma YKL-40 levelswere significantly higher (p < 0.01) in dogs with cancer than in healthy dogs. A significantdecrease in the YAA titers was detected in the dogs with cancer when compared with thoseof the healthy dogs (p < 0.05), although the change was not correlated with the YKL-40levels. Among the dogs with cancer, plasma YKL-40 levels in the dogs that later relapsed orhad metastasis were significantly higher than in the dogs with no signs of relapse (p < 0.01)or metastasis (p <0.05). The relapse and metastasis rates were significantly higher in thehigh YKL-40 group (> 180 pg/mL) than in the low YKL-40 group (< 180 pg/mL). The resultsimply that plasma YKL-40 levels might have the potential to be developed as a marker ofmalignancy progression and prognosis in canine cancers.

Background: Mitochondrial DNA 3243A>G, one of the most common pathogenic mitochondrial mutations, often presents in adulthood and is associated with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) and other syndromes. Due to multi-organ involvement, patients with m.3243A>G frequently require critical care, but the diagnosis often remains unrecognized. This multicenter study aimed to evaluate the prognostic factors of m.3243A>G in Taiwan, and focused on those who had been admitted to ICU. Methods: Patients diagnosed with m.3243A>G from January 1st 1997 to August 1st 2014 at the National Taiwan University Hospital were identified. Clinical features, laboratory study results, and outcomes were recorded. ICU admission course was reviewed. Prognostic factors for ICU admission, severe disability (defi ned by modifi ed Rankin Scale, mRS≥4), and death were analyzed. Results: A total of 33 patients were identifi ed, with 19 patients (58%) demonstrating the MELAS phenotype. Thirteen patients (39%) had been admitted to ICU, and 7 (54%) were diagnosed with the mutation after ICU admission. Seizure was the most common cause for ICU admission (n=8), followed by lactic acidosis (n=2), diabetic ketoacidosis (n=1), stroke (n=1), and respiratory failure (n=1). In total, 6 patients (18%) died while 11 patients (33%) developed mRS≥4. Logistic regression analysis identifi ed symptomatic CNS involvement as a signifi cant predictor of both ICU admission (OR 8.25, 95% CI 1.43-47.58, p=0.018) and development of mRS≥4 (OR 14.44, 95% CI 1.56-133.58, p=0.019); while Kaplan Meier analysis showed that ICU admission was signifi cantly associated with mortality (log-rank test p=0.012, Fig.).

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In order to fabricate polymer field‐effect transistors (PFETs) with high electrical stability under bias‐stress, it is crucial to minimize the density of charge trapping sites caused by the disordered regions. Here we report PFETs with excellent electrical stability comparable to that of single‐crystalline organic semiconductors by specifically controlling the molecular weight (MW) of the donor‐acceptor type copolymer semiconductors, poly (didodecylquaterthiophene‐<I>alt</I>‐didodecylbithiazole). We found that MW‐induced thermally structural transition from liquid‐crystalline to semi‐crystalline phases strongly affects the device performance (charge‐carrier mobility and electrical bias‐stability) as well as the nanostructures such as the molecular ordering and the morphological feature. In particular, for the polymer with a MW of 22 kDa, the transfer curves varied little (Δ<I>V</I>th = 3∼4 V) during a period of prolonged bias stress (about 50 000 s) under ambient conditions. This enhancement of the electrical bias‐stability can be attributed to highly ordered liquid‐crystalline nanostructure of copolymer semiconductors on dielectric surface via the optimization of molecular weights.</P>

<P>We present the synthesis, characterization, and structural analysis of a thiophene-rich heteroacene, dibenzothiopheno[6,5-b:6',5'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DBTTT) as well as its application in field-effect transistors. The design of DBTTT is based on the enhancement of intermolecular charge transfer through strong S-S interactions. Crystal structure analysis showed that the intermolecular pi-pi distance is shortened and that the packing density is higher than those of the electronically equivalent benzene analogue, dinaphtho-[2,3-b:2',3'f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT). The highest hole mobility we obtained in polycrystalline DBTTT thin-film transistors was 19.3 cm(2).V-1.s(-1), six times higher than that of DNTT-based transistors. The observed isotropic angular mobilities and thermal stabilities at temperatures up to 140 degrees C indicate the great potential of DBTTT for attaining device uniformity and processability.</P>
