        The emerging role of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in radiotherapy

        Radiotherapy (RT) has been used for decades as one of the main treatment modalities for cancer patients. The therapeutic effect of RT has been primarily ascribed to DNA damage leading to tumor cell death. Besides direct tumoricidal effect, RT affects antitumor responses through immune-mediated mechanism, which provides a rationale for combining RT and immunotherapy for cancer treatment. Thus far, for the combined treatment with RT, numerous studies have focused on the immune checkpoint inhibitors and have shown promising results. However, treatment resistance is still common, and one of the main resistance mechanisms is thought to be due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment where myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) play a crucial role. MDSCs are immature myeloid cells with a strong immunosuppressive activity. MDSC frequency is correlated with tumor progression, recurrence, negative clinical outcome, and reduced efficacy of immunotherapy. Therefore, increasing efforts to target MDSCs have been made to overcome the resistance in cancer treatments. In this review, we focus on the role of MDSCs in RT and highlight growing evidence for targeting MDSCs in combination with RT to improve cancer treatment.

        The Pharmacological Inhibition of ERK5 Enhances Apoptosis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells

        <P>Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a fatal hematological malignancy which is resistant to a variety of chemotherapy drugs. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 (ERK5) plays a novel role in chemoresistance in some cancer cells and this pathway is a central mediator of cell survival and apoptotic regulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ERK5 inhibitor, XMD8-92, on proliferation and apoptosis in AML cell lines. Findings showed that XMD8-92 inhibited the activation of ERK5 by G-CSF and decreased the expression of c-Myc and Cyclin D1. The treatment of XMD8-92 reduced the phosphorylation of ERK5 leading to a distinct inhibition of cell proliferation and increased apoptosis in Kasumi-1 and HL-60 cells. Taken together, our study suggests that the inhibition of ERK5 by XMD8-92 can trigger apoptosis and inhibit proliferation in AMLs. Therefore, the inhibition of ERK5 may be an effective adjuvant in AML chemotherapy.</P>

        The Bromodomain Inhibitor JQ1 Enhances the Responses to All- <i>trans</i> Retinoic Acid in HL-60 and MV4-11 Leukemia Cells

        <P>All-<I>trans</I> retinoic acid (ATRA) is a highly effective treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a cytogenetically distinct subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, ATRA-based treatment is not effective in other subtypes of AML. In non-APL AML, ATRA signaling pathway is impaired or downmodulated, and consequently fails to respond to pharmacological doses of ATRA. Therefore, complementary treatment strategies are needed to improve ATRA responsiveness in non-APL AML. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of ATRA and bromodomain inhibitor JQ1, proven to have potent anti-cancer activity mainly through inhibition of c-Myc. We showed that the combination of ATRA with JQ1 synergistically inhibited proliferation of AML cells. The synergistic growth inhibition was resulted from differentiation or apoptosis depending on the kind of AML cells. Concomitantly, the combined treatment of ATRA and JQ1 caused greater depletion of c-Myc and hTERT expression than each agent alone in AML cells. Taken together, these findings support the rationale for the use of the combination of ATRA and JQ1 as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of AML.</P>

        음악교수법연구 : 2007년 개정 교육과정에 따른 중학교 1학년“컴퓨터를 활용한 음악 만들기” 교수-학습활동 개발

        본 연구는 영상 음악 만들기 중학교 1학년 교수 학습 프로그램을 개발하는 것을 목적 하에 실시하였다. 이를 위하여 2007 개정 음악과 교육과정에서 제시하고 있는 컴퓨터 관련 음악활동내용을 분석하고, 중학교1학년 음악 교과서 16종에 나타난 ‘컴퓨터를 활용한 음악 만들기’ 창작학습의 유형을 분류하였다. 이를 바탕으로 2차시 분량의 수업지도안을 개발하여 서울시 서초구 소재 A중학교 1학년 2개 학급을 대상으로 실제 수업을 실시하였다. 수업에 대한 평가 설문을 분석한 결과 음악 교육적으로 의미 있는 내용을 간단히 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 컴퓨터 음악 프로그램의 활용과 같은 학생들의 흥미와 시대적 요구를 반영한 음악 수업의 개발이 필요하다. 둘째, 사운드 편집 프로그램을 활용한 소리의 시˙청각적인 체험은 학생들로 하여금 보다 적극적으로 소리의 탐색 과정에 참여하는데 도움을 주었다. 따라서 앞으로의 학교 음악 수업은 학생들의 관심과 흥미를 적극 반영할 수 있는 방향으로 발전해야 하며, 활용도 높은 교육용 컴퓨터 음악 프로그램이 제작˙개발되어야 할 것이다. The purpose of this study was to analyze the computer music activities in the contents among the 16 kinds of newly published music textbooks in 2009 for the 7th graders based on the ‘2007 Revised National Curriculum of the Music Education in Korea’. In the literature review, the following aspects were reviewed. First, the creative music making in music education under the 7th National Curriculum and the 2007 revised National Curriculum of the Music Education in Korea were compared. One of the biggest changes in the newly published textbooks was the emphasis on the use of computer technology in the creative music making area. All 16 textbooks commonly contained ``the reconstruction of music and music making by utilizing multimedia. On analyzing all 16 kinds of newly published music textbooks in 2009, the following results were found that firstly, the use of music technology enabled students to develop more active and comprehensive music making activities. In addition, it enabled students to enjoy music much more in their lives. Secondly, the use of multimedia enabled students to experience art and music simultaneously as well as to develop comprehensive musicianship. Thirdly, the use of music technology enabled teachers to utilize various teaching styles efficiently such as in individual learning, group learning, project, portfolio, and etc.This study``s findings strongly suggested that our music education needs to furnish more learning equipment such as personal computers, hardware, software, DVD player, recorder, MIDI system and so on. We also need to develop various teaching strategies considering various levels of students and motivation. It is also necessary to provide sufficient instruction for the use of various technical programs and utilities.

        An Energy Combiner for a Multi-Input Energy-Harvesting System

        <P>An energy combiner for delivering electrical energy harvested simultaneously from individual energy harvesters (EHs) to a single energy storage device such as a battery is presented. It is designed as a modular architecture to be handled as a subsystem and supports an arbitrary number of EHs, which can be connected to the energy combiner in a hot-pluggable form. With the adaptive connection flows of a novel control algorithm, the energy harvested from each EH can be transmitted to an energy storage device without interfering with each other. An evaluation system is implemented, including the energy combiner circuit fabricated in a 0.13-μm CMOS process. The experimental results show that the energy combiner, with a low power consumption of 1.55 μW, achieves a maximum energy-combining efficiency of up to 95% for three input sources.</P>

        Herzberg 이론에 근거한 영관장교 사기 영향요인에 관한 연구

        군의 사기는 생명의 위협을 무릎 쓰고 임무를 수행해야 하는 군 조직의 특성상 ‘보상을 고려하지 않고 자신감과 자긍심을 토대로 스스로의 희생을 무릅쓰면서 까지 임무를 완수하려는 굳은 의지 및 자세’로서 일반적인 사기와는 다른 특성을 지니고 있다. 특히 영관장교들은 고급간부로서 국방정책을 입안하고 타 간부들을 교육·지도·통솔해야 하는 위치에 있기 때문에 이들의 사기는 군의 모든 계층에 큰 영향을 미치며 군 전투력과도 직결되므로 더욱 중요하다 할 수 있다. 따라서 영관장교들의 사기가 Herzberg의 동기 · 위생요인 중 과연 어떤 요인에 의해 진작되는지 알아보는 것은 의미 있는 연구라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 구조방정식 모형에 의한 경로분석 및 다중회귀분석을 통해 그 영향을 실증 분석하였으며, 그 결과 동기요인은 영관장교들의 사기에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 데 비해 위생요인은 그만큼 큰 영향을 미치지 않은 것으로 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 ‘동기요인의 영향이 위생요인보다 더 크게 나타날 것이다’라는 본 연구의 가설을 지지하는 것일 뿐만 아니라 영관장교들의 사기에 있어서도 Herzberg 이론이 성립될 수 있음을 입증하는 것으로, 영관장교들의 사기를 진작시키기 위해서는 위생요인 보다는 동기요인 즉 성취감, 책임감, 적성부합성, 인정감, 직무의 중요성 등에 더욱 집중하고 관심을 투여하는 것이 보다 효과적이라는 것을 시사하고 있다. Korean military has developed and been managed in a rational way being comparable with developed countries, breaking from insolvent convention in the early stage. However, it still raises doubts that how much Korean military has been improved in terms of intangible strength behind quantum leap of concrete strength. Especially, morale of military is a will that one does not keep compensation in mind but sacrifices oneself and accomplishes their duty based on sense of duty, pride and an invincible spirit. It is different from morale of society so it is important to research politic plan for maximizing morale. Also, the study was proceeded on the basis of "Herzberg two factors theory", the very theory that explains human desire the best, to find out the relationship between the theory and defined military morale factors through this study. Therefore, 14 factors have been independent variables including achievement, responsibility, acknowledgment, stability of job, welfare level, payment level, personal relationship within workplace among motivator·hygiene factor through precedent researches and then pride and self-respect have been dependent variables for analyzing effects of independent variables on dependent variables, analyzing moderating effects with demographic factors including parent service, commission classification and class. This study has been conducted through the survey of 327 senior officers and statical analysis has been done through SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0. Path analysis utilizing multiple regression analysis and structural equation model and multigroup analysis have been conducted. As a result, the movtivator had a positive influence on morale of senior officers and hygiene factor, on the other hand, had no influence. Following examination of multiple regression analyss represented that not only motivator but also hygiene factor provided an influence on the morale, however the influnece was tenuous. The thesis of this study was clearly proven, Herzberg two-factor theory was proven through the influential relationships between motivator, hygiene factor and morale. According to this, it has been proved that Herzberg"s hypothesis "the motivator has much more influences on senior officer"s morale than hygiene factor does" to be applied to morale of senior officers.
