<P>Apx toxins have been identified as important virulence factors of <I>Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae</I>, the etiologic agent of porcine pleuropneumonia. In some <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I> serotypes, Apx toxins are secreted by the cell membrane proteins encoded by <I>apxIIIB</I> and <I>apxIIID</I> genes. In an effort to develop a live vaccine strain against <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I>, we inactivated the <I>apxIIIB</I> and <I>apxIIID</I> genes in <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I> 1536, a serotype 2 strain, resulting in the Δ<I>apxIIIB/DapxIIID</I> mutant strain (1536ΔBΔD). Immunization of pigs with live 1536ΔBΔD <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I> conferred protection against homologous challenge with wild-type <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I> 1536. Thus, impaired Apx toxin secretion may decrease the virulence of <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I> and may be an effective strategy for the development of a live-attenuated <I>A. pleuropneumoniae</I> vaccine.</P>

Objectives; The purpose of this study was to investigate and characterize the distribution of Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus(SFTSV) in ROK military bases. Methods; To investigate the distribution, ticks were collected from 55 military bases within the operational area in Gangwon province. The SFTSV was detected by real time reverse transcription PCR and RT nested PCR. The nucleotide sequences and the phylogenetic tree were used in order to confirm and analyze SFTSV. Results; 5,959 ticks were collected from 55 military bases. 5,771 ticks(adult and nymph ticks) were Haemaphysalis longicornis(96.9%), 174 were Haemaphysalis flava(2.9%), and 9 were Ixodes nipponensis(0.15%). SFTSV was confirmed in eight military bases. Genetic and phylogenetic analyses of these sequences revealed that the tick-derived Korean SFTSV strain clustered into the genotype A and B. Conclusions; This findings suggest to build management system from tick collection and classification to SFTSV detection and preventive measures in preventive medicine unit and veterinary team(Division). Based on the collection of the information, the Army and the Armed Forces Medical Command are need to establish a plan of pest control and prevention of disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study presents the response of a military unit to an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Gyeonggi Province. As soon as 2 soldiers were identified as index cases, the infectious disease investigators of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and the Armed Forces Epidemiologic Investigation Center discussed the investigation and response plan for an imminent massive outbreak. METHODS: The joint immediate response team (IRT) conducted interviews with confirmed COVID-19 patients, reviewed their medical records, performed contact tracing using global positioning system data, and undertook a field investigation. For risk assessment, the joint IRT visited all 8 sites of the military units and the army chaplain’s church to evaluate the transmission risk at each site. The evaluation items included the size of the site, the use of air conditioning, whether windows were opened, and whether masks were worn. Pooled testing was used for the low-risk population to quickly detect the spread of COVID-19 in the military base. RESULTS: One day before the symptom onset of the index case, the lecturer and >50% of the attendees were infected with COVID-19 while attending a lecture that lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes. Attendees were not wearing masks and were in a poorly ventilated room. CONCLUSIONS: Since COVID-19 can be spread before symptom onset, contact tracing must be performed to investigate potential exposures prior to symptom onset and to manage any exposed persons.
Association of the G134A and G184C Polymorphisms in the CYP1A1 Gene with Lung Cancer Incidence

The G184C and G134A single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the CYP1A1 gene result in Ala62Pro and Gly45Asp substitutions, respectively. Here, we tested whether these SNPs are associated with an alteration in lung cancer incidence. We examined 80 Korean subjects with lung cancer and 240 age- and sex-matched controls. For each subject, the CYP1A1 gene was PCR amplified and sequenced. We observed that the odds ratio (OR) for lung cancer was 3.37 higher in subjects with the G184C polymorphism than in controls (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.89~12.73, P = 0.07). In contrast, the OR for lung cancer was 1.23 in subjects with the G134A polymorphism compared to controls (95% CI, 0.68~2.20, P = 0.49). The G184C polymorphism exacerbated the effects of smoking on lung cancer development. Gene-smoking interaction analyses revealed that past or present smokers with the G184C polymorphism had a higher incidence of lung cancer (OR, 24.72; 95% CI, 4.48~136.31; P < 0.01) than control smokers (OR, 6.65; 95% CI, 2.72~16.28; P < 0.01). However, there was only a slight difference in the ORs for lung cancer between control smokers and smokers with the G134A polymorphism. These findings suggest that the G184C polymorphism, but not the G134A polymorphism, is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The electrochemical properties and microstructure changes of Pr0.3Sr0.7Co0.3Fe0.7O3−<I>δ</I> (PSCF3737) were studied in this paper. It was confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis that the oxygen vacancy of PSCF3737 was lower and that the atomic distance between an oxygen atom and a neighboring atom (especially cobalt) of PSCF3737 was longer compared to those of Pr0.3Sr0.7CoO3−<I>δ</I> (PSC37). In addition, the surface reaction of PSCF3737 changed from a one-electron reduction mechanism to a two-electron reduction mechanism, which may lead to enhancement of the cathode performance. The area specific resistance of PSCF3737 was 0.11Ωcm2 at 700°C after changing the fabrication conditions of the cathode in order to optimize the microstructure. A single cell test was performed using PSCF3737. A maximum power density of 315mW/cm2 at 575°C was obtained.</P>
Fabrication of multi-layered solid oxide fuel cells using a sheet joining process
Park, Kwangjin,Lee, Changbo,Bae, Joongmyeon,Yoo, Youngsung Elsevier 2009 International journal of hydrogen energy Vol.34 No.16
<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Ceria-based electrolytes can be used in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that operate at intermediate-temperature due to their high ionic conductivity. However, the difficulty in fabricating a thin and dense ceria-based electrolyte on an anode support is well-known. In this study, a new sheet joining process is suggested to produce a thin and dense ceria-based electrolyte for anode-supported SOFCs. The main idea used with the sheet joining process is a combination of a sheet cell fabricated by tape casting, and an anode pellet, fabricated by pressing. The maximum power density of a single cell, fabricated by the sheet joining process, is 0.315Wcm−2 at 600°C in a power generation test when Pr0.3Sr0.7Co0.3Fe0.7O3−<I>δ</I> was used as the cathode material. The performance durability of a single cell is tested over 1000h of operation in which a dense electrolyte was observed to survive.</P>
