In this report, for Kwangju I shall discuss the relationship between precipitation and the pH. I shall look at the air pollutant and the pH. Data from this study for precipitation and the air pollutant were observed by KMA and YEA. The precipitation and the air pollutant were observed and recorded every hour from 1991 to 1995. Results : Annual mean pH was 5.6. The pH for November and the pH between January and May were 5.6 or less. The rate of acid rainy day in annual mean precipitation days was 48.1%. The occurrence of acid rain was more than 50%. The data shows that half of all rain in a year, was acid rain. The mean pH for March was 5.4 and there were 18 times acid rain occurred among 26 rainy times. This shows that rate of acid rain reaches 69%, it is a serious problem. The acidity is highest in the spring time and then followed in order by fall, winter and summer. The mean pH of precipitation in spring is 5.5, it means low level of acid rain. Daily variation of the pH doesn't have any special meaning. The pH in the afternoon is generally low and the highest pH level of acid rain was 4, which was observed between 19:00 and 21:00 on the 10th of March, 1991. The pH interannual variation of rain had a tendency to be high in 1992. But in 1995, the amplitude of the pH was large, so we can expect a high pH level of acid rain. As precipitation amount grews, the pH of precipitation tended to be low. Although, there is a little corelation(r=0.106) between frequency of acid rain and amount of rain. The lasting of rain for long periods raised the frequency of acid rain and standardized the pH. As the temperature goes up, consistency of pollutant also went up. But it is more reasonable to assume that consistency was raised by human activity. The temperature effect on the acidity of rain is minimal. NO_2 (r=0.205) is the primary effector on the acidity of rain, and then fellowed in order by SO_2 (r=0.118), TSP (r=0.019). However in fact, TSP has little influence on the acidity of rain.

Asthma is an inflammatory airways disease characterized by bronchial hyperresponsiveness and airways obstruction, which results from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Interleukin (IL)-13 and IL-4 are important in IgE synthesis and allergic inflammation, therefore genes encoding IL-13 and IL-4 are candidates for predisposition to asthma. In the present study, we screened single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IL-13 and IL-4 and examined whether they are risk factors for asthma. We resequenced all exons and the promoter region in 12 asthma patients and 12 normal controls, and identified 18 SNPs including 2 novel SNPs. The linkage disequilibrium(LD) pattern was evaluated with 16 common SNPs, and haplotypes were also estimated within the block. Although IL-13 and IL-4 are localized within 27 kb on chromosome 5q31 and share many biological profiles, this region was partitioned into 2 blocks. One SNP and three SNPs were determined as haplotype-taggingSNPs (htSNPs) within IL-13 and IL-4 haplotype-block, respectively. No significant associations were observed between any of the SNPs or haplotypes and development of asthma in small number of Korean subjects. However, the genetic variants of IL-13 and IL-4 would provide valuable strategies for the genotyping studies in large population.

The main objective of this study is to analyse the influence factors of snowfall enhancement by glaciogenic seeding in a mountainous area. Twenty-five seeding experiments have been conducted during the period of February to April 2010. To use two rates seeding experiments (SR1: 1.04 g min-1, SR2: 2.08 g min-1) have been tested to get an appropriate ratio for snowfall enhancement at Daegwallyeong area. The conditions of seeding are able as followings: surface temperature <0oC, wind speed <5 m/s, wind direction between 0 and 130o. The experiment results indicated that in the case of SR1 was more effective than SR2. The number of small ice particles below 1.0 mm was increased during seeding period measured by PARSIVEL disdrometer near generator. Most of snowfall enhancement by seeding was observed the inflow of the easterly wind blew in toward Gangwon regions from the East Sea and the supersaturated supercooled liquid water due to orographic effect.

<P>A novel application of quantum‐dot QD sensitized TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotubes for artificial photosynthesis is presented by Chan Beum Park and co‐workers on p. 1883. The system is conceptually very close to natural photosynthesis; photo‐excited electrons are rapidly injected to nearby reaction centers upon light irradiation and generate reducing power, driving redox reactions for synthesis of organic compounds. This study demonstrates that more efficient artificial photosynthetic systems can be developed through rational design and engineering of photosystems. </P>

Bart's syndrome was initially described as a genodermatosis characterized by congenital localized absence of the skin with blistering and nail deformitiesl-3. However, it is considered as any type of epidermolysis bullosa(EB) with localized congenital absence of the skin on the extremities. A 33-day-old &male baby was presented with congenital absence of the skin over the left shin and dorsa of both feet which were covered with the thin, translucent, and brown-red glistening membranes. Blistering of the right calf and left great toe nail deformity were also noted. She was diagnosed as a recessive dystrophic EB by the histopathological, ultra- structural and immunomapping studies.

<P><B>Chiral compounds are successfully photosynthesized by coupling redox biocatalysis</B> with the photoregeneration of nicotinamide cofactors on quantum‐dot‐sensitized TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotubes under visible light irradiation. Nanotubular morphology and hybridization of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> with CdS enables highly efficient photoregeneration of cofactors by ensuring better diffusion of reaction species and rapid charge separation. </P>
