Canonical Correlation Analysis for Estimation of Relationships between Sexual Maturity and Egg Production Traits upon Availability of Nutrients in Pullets

Cankaya, Soner,Ocak, Nuh,Sungu, Murat Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.11

In this study, canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was applied to estimate the relationship between three different sexual maturity traits (X set: days to first egg (DFE), weight of the first egg (WFE), body weight at first egg (BWFE)) and level of nutrient intake (Y set: energy (EI) and protein intake (PI)) or the egg production traits at two different periods (Z set: number of egg (NE1 and NET) and weight of egg (WE1 and WET) from 22 to 25 (Wfirst) and 22 to 33 wk of age (Wall), respectively), which were measured from 64 egg-type pullets (Isa Brown) manipulated for time of access to energy and protein sources to onset of egg production. Partial CCA (PCCA) was used to eliminate the contribution of differences in the levels of nutrient intake to canonical variables for X and Z sets at the first production period. Estimated canonical correlation coefficients between X set and Y set (0.429, p = 0.042), X set and Z set (0.390, p = 0.007 for Wfirst) and within Z set (between Wfirst and Wall; 0.780, p<0.001), and partial canonical correlation coefficient between X set and Z set (0.415, p = 0.009) were significant. Canonical weights and loadings from CCA indicated that the BWFE had the largest contribution compared to the DFE and WFE to variation of egg number produced at two different periods. The results from PCCA indicated that the contribution of PI and EI to the degree of the correlation between canonical variables for X and Z sets were unfavourable. In conclusion, the effect of body weight at sexual maturity upon the availability of nutrients can have a higher contribution to variation of egg production in pullets if the contribution of differences in nutrient intakes to onset of egg production were eliminated.

Original Articles : Comparison of the Outcome of Repeat Trabeculectomy with Adjunctive Mitomycin C and Initial Trabeculectomy

( Ali Bulent Cankaya ),( Ufuk Elgin ) 대한안과학회 2011 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.25 No.6

Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of repeat and initial trabeculectomy with mitomycine C (MMC). Methods: Eighty seven patients, who had underwent repeat (repeat group) or initial (initial group) trabeculectomy with MMC, were enrolled in this prospective trial. Postoperative outcome measures included the amount of decrease in intraocular pressure (IOP), the number of anti-glaucoma medications, and the complications. The success of trabeculectomy was defined on the basis of three definitions which were: IOP ≤18 mmHg (definition 1), IOP ≤21 mmHg (definition 2), and the amount of decrease in IOP from baseline ≥30% (definition 3). Success was further defined as "complete" when these criteria were obtained without any anti-glaucoma medications and "qualified" with or without medical therapy and no further surgical procedures. Results: Fifty nine eyes underwent initial and 28 eyes underwent repeat trabeculectomy. The mean follow-up period was 19.1 ± 5.9 months. Complete success rates were significantly greater in the initial trabeculectomy group (p = 0.02 for definition 1, p = 0.038 for definition 2, p = 0.003 for definition 3). A higher proportion of eyes in the initial group achieved qualified success relative to the group A eyes, but the differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.33 for definition 1, p = 0.99 for definition 2, p = 0.24 for definition 3). The mean number of antiglaucomatous medications at the last examination was 1.2 ± 1.2 in repeat group and 0.7 ± 1.1 in initial group (p = 0.01). The number of complications during the follow up period did not differ significantly between the two groups (p = 0.65). Conclusions: Repeat trabeculectomy with MMC has high success and low complication rates in patients with previously failed trabeculectomy in spite of the need of higher number of anti-glaucoma medications.

Effect of Dietary Addition of Turkish Propolis on the Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Serum Variables of Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

        Denli, Muzaffer,Cankaya, S.,Silici, S.,Okan, F.,Uluocak, A.N. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2005 Animal Bioscience Vol.18 No.6

We examined the effect of dietary Turkish propolis and flavomycin on growth performance, carcass characteristics, internal organ weights and some serum variables in quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) birds. One hundred and fifty day-old quails were randomly divided into five groups, with ten replicate pens per treatment and three birds per pen. One group received the basal diet (antibiotic-free), the control. The flavomycin at 10 mg/kg diet and propolis at 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/kg diet were added to the basal diet. Body weight gain, feed consumption and feed efficiency were determinated weekly. Carcass characteristics, internal organ weights and serum variables were determinated at the end of the study (35 day). The results showed that body weight gain, feed efficiency and carcass weight were improved significantly (p<0.01) when compared to control group for birds fed diets containing propolis and flavomycin between 14 to 35 days. The addition of 1 g/kg propolis to the diet resulted in significantly (p<0.01) better-feed efficiency as compared to control and other treatment groups. There were no significant differences in carcass yield, abdominal fat, liver gizzard, proventriculus and intestinal weight and intestinal pH among the groups. In addition, serum ALP, total protein, uric acid, cholesterol and triglyceride were not influenced by the any supplementation. However, birds fed with propolis tended to have higher serum HDL and lower level than birds fed the control diet. In conclusion, supplementation of propolis and flavomycin during the growth period showed similar effects on growth performance in quail. Therefore, it can serve as a natiral substitute for antibiotics in poultry diets.

The Effects of Skin Pigmentation on Physiological Factors of Thermoregulation and Grazing Behaviour of Dairy Goats in a Hot and Humid Climate

Darcan, Nazan Koluman,Cankaya, Soner,Karakok, Serap Goncu Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.5

The aim of this study was to understand the effects of skin pigmentation on physiological parameters of thermoregulation and grazing behaviour of dairy goats in a hot and humid climate. The study used 26 crossbred Saanen yearling goats (95% Saanen+5% Local Hair Breed). The animals were raised at semi-intensive private farms in Adana (36 59'N, 35 18'E). Groups were selected 2 d before the start of observations. Goats were categorized as predominantly pigmented (P) skin and unpigmented (UP) skin. All observations and measurements were collected on grassland during the grazing period of June and July 2007 (60 d). Air temperature and relative humidity were recorded at 10 min intervals by a portable data logger. The physiological data (rectal temperature, respiration and pulse rate, and skin temperatures from head and udder) were recorded twice weekly in the morning (07:00-08:00); at midday (13:00-14:00); and in the evening (18:00-19:00). Additionally, the activity of the animals was observed and classified (eating, ruminating, drinking, standing, walking, lying) for 12 h during the day twice weekly, using a portable camera system linked directly to a computer. Panting behaviour was also observed. According to the THI values, the experimental goats were subjected to stressful conditions. The pigmented goats had significantly lower rectal temperatures (39.68 vs. $29.89^{\circ}C$), pulse rate (74.08 vs. 84.10 beat/min) and respiration rate (65.65 vs. 88.23 breath/min.) compared with unpigmented goats at midday when the THI exceeded 92. The rectal, head and udder temperatures, pulse and respiration rates of the non-pigmented group exceeded $40^{\circ}C$, $37^{\circ}C$, $37.5^{\circ}C$, 84 beats/min and 78 breaths/min, respectively. Higher activity was observed among pigmented compared with unpigmented goats. Unpigmented goats grazed (4.3 vs. 5.6 h), ruminated (2.0 vs. 2.4 h), and stood (0.8 vs. 1.2 h) less, but lay down (2.2 vs. 1.8 h) more than pigmented goats. The data obtained in this experiment support the hypothesis that unpigmented goats are more adversely affected by climatic stress, likely due to their decreased activity and increased water consumption, as demonstrated by previous studies.

Energy scaling of a carbon nanotube saturable absorber mode-locked femtosecond bulk laser.

        Baylam, I,Ozharar, S,Cankaya, H,Choi, S Y,Kim, K,Rotermund, F,Griebner, U,Petrov, V,Sennaroglu, A Optical Society of America 2012 Optics letters Vol.37 No.17

We report successful energy scaling of a room-temperature femtosecond Cr4+: forsterite laser by using a single-walled carbon nanotube saturable absorber (SWCNT-SA). By incorporating a q-preserving multipass cavity, a repetition rate of 4.51 MHz was realized, and the oscillator produced 121 fs, 10 nJ pulses at 1247 nm, with an average output power of 46 mW. To the best of our knowledge, the peak power of 84 kW is the highest generated to date from a SWCNT-SA mode-locked oscillator. Furthermore, energy scaling of a femtosecond multipass-cavity laser, mode-locked using a SWCNT-SA, is demonstrated for the first time.

Measurement of Contrast Sensitivity in Patients with Behçet’s Disease without Ocular Involvement

        Ercan Ozsoy,Cem Cankaya,Emrah Ozturk,Abuzer Gunduz,Pamuk Betul Ulucan 대한안과학회 2019 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.33 No.2

Purpose: To evaluate contrast sensitivity in patients with Behçet’s disease (BD) without ocular involvement. Methods: The study group was composed of 47 BD patients (20 to 50 years of age) who did not have ocular involvement. The control group was composed of 47 normal volunteers who were similar to the study group in terms of age and gender. No participants in this study had any ocular or systemic pathologies except for BD. The contrast sensitivity measurements were performed using the Functional Acuity Contrast Test under photopic conditions, and the results were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean age of the BD patients and control subjects was 34.5 ± 9.7 and 33.2 ± 7.6 years, respectively. The mean disease duration of the BD patients was 5.5 ± 6.4 years. There was a statistically significant decrease at five spatial frequencies (A, 1.5; B, 3; C, 6; D, 2; and E, 18 cycles per degree) in patients with BD compared with control subjects (p < 0.001, p = 0.004, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, and p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: The contrast sensitivity of BD patients without ocular involvement was lower than that of the control group. Further studies seem mandatory to confirm our results.

Growth Performance, Meat Quality and Caecal Coliform Bacteria Count of Broiler Chicks Fed Diet with Green Tea Extract

        Erener, Guray,Ocak, Nuh,Altop, Aydin,Cankaya, Soner,Aksoy, Hasan Murat,Ozturk, Ergin Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2011 Animal Bioscience Vol.24 No.8

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary green tea extract (GTE) on the performance, carcass and gastrointestinal tract (gut) traits, caecal coliform bacteria count, and pH and color (CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$) values of the breast muscle in broilers. A total number of 600 day-old broilers (Ross 308) was allocated to three treatments with four replicates containing 50 (25 males and 25 females) birds. The dietary treatments consisted of the basal diet as the control (0GTE) and diets with GTE at 0.1 (0.1GTE) or 0.2 (0.2GTE) g/kg. Body weights and the feed intake of broilers were measured at 1, 21 and 42 days, the feed intake was measured for different periods and the feed conversion ratio was calculated accordingly. At 42 day four birds per replicate were slaughtered for the determination of carcass and organ weights, caecal coliform bacteria count, and also quality of the breast muscle. The dietary GTE increased the body weight, feed efficiency, carcass weight and dressing percentage and decreased caecal coliform bacteria count of broilers (p<0.05). The 0GTE broilers consumed (p<0.01) less feed than the 0.1GTE birds in the entire experimental period. The relative abdominal fat weight and gut length of broilers in the 0.2GTE were tended to be lower (p<0.07) than those in the 0GTE group. The breast meat from 0.1GTE birds had a lower pH value when compared to that from 0GTE birds. The 0.1GTE broilers had lighter breast meat than 0GTE and 0.2GTE birds. The dietary GTE increased $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of the breast meat. Thus this product appeared to have a measurable impact on CIE color values of the breast meat in broilers. The results of the present study may indicate that the improved production results in the group with added GTE are directly connected with physiological mechanisms such as the regulation of the caecal micro-flora.

Characteristics of Deep Neck Infection in Children According to Weight Percentile

        Mehmet Fatih Garca,Ali Budak,Nihat Demir,Hakan Cankaya,Ahmet Faruk Kiroglu 대한이비인후과학회 2014 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.7 No.2

Objectives. To evaluate the effect of weight percentile on deep neck infections in children. Methods. A retrospective evaluation of 79 patients who were treated for deep neck infections. The patients were divided into six groups according to weight percentile. Patients who had systemic and/or congenital disease were excluded. Their demographics, etiology, localization, laboratory, and treatment results were reviewed. Results. In total, 79 pediatric patients were recorded: 48.1% were females and 51.9% were males, with a mean age of 7.3 years. In total, 60 patients were under the 50th percentile according to their weight versus all children. The antero- posterior triangle (29.1%) and submandibular (26.5%) spaces were most commonly involved with deep neck infec- tion. However, the anteroposterior triangle space was the highest in the group below the 3rd percentile (44.4%). In the blood analysis, white blood cell levels in patients with at percentile values of 75–50 were higher than other groups (P<0.05). Significant differences were found between C-reactive protein and hemoglobin levels and diameter of abscesses. The need for surgical drainage in patients in lower percentiles was higher. The patients who needed sur- gical drainage consisted of 56 patients (93.3%) below the 50th percentile and 9 patients (100%) below the 3rd per- centile. Conclusion. Deep neck infection is more insidious and dangerous in low-weight-percentile children, especially those hav- ing low white blood cell counts, low hemoglobin levels, and high C-reactive protein in laboratory results.

Measuring urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine and malondialdehyde levels in women with overactive bladder

        Eda Dokumacioglu,Ozay Demiray,Ali Dokumacioglu,Arzu Sahin,Tugba Mazlum Sen,Soner Cankaya 대한비뇨의학회 2018 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.59 No.4

Purpose: In this study, we aimed to explain the role of oxidative stress in women with overactive bladder (OAB) by investigating the levels of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a marker of oxidative DNA damage, and malondialdehyde (MDA), an indicator of lipid peroxidation. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 women were included in the study: 45 female patients diagnosed with OAB at Hopa State Hospital Urology Polyclinic and 45 healthy women without any metabolic or neurologic disease. Levels of MDA and 8-OHdG were measured in 24-hour urine samples for all subjects. Results: Urinary levels of MDA and 8-OHdG were significantly higher in the OAB group than in the control group (p<0.001). A significant positive correlation (p<0.001) was found between the measurements of 8-OHdG and MDA. Conclusions: Oxidative stress may be important in the pathophysiology of OAB, because levels of 8-OHdG and MDA are increased. Increased levels of 8-OHdG may be due to damaged nuclear and mitochondrial DNA as a result of oxidative attacks caused by free radicals. Nevertheless, further randomized and prospective studies with larger patient populations are needed.
