        Pantropical climate interactions

        <P><B>Tropical interconnections</B></P><P>The El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which originates in the tropical Pacific, affects the rest of the world's tropics by perturbing global atmospheric circulation. Less appreciated than this influence is how the tropical Atlantic and Indian Oceans affect the Pacific. Cai <I>et al.</I> review what we know about these pantropical interactions, discuss possible ways of improving predictions of current climate variability, and consider how projecting future climate under different anthropogenic forcing scenarios may be improved. They argue that making progress in this field will require sustained global climate observations, climate model improvements, and theoretical advances.</P><P><I>Science</I>, this issue p. eaav4236</P><P>The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which originates in the Pacific, is the strongest and most well-known mode of tropical climate variability. Its reach is global, and it can force climate variations of the tropical Atlantic and Indian Oceans by perturbing the global atmospheric circulation. Less appreciated is how the tropical Atlantic and Indian Oceans affect the Pacific. Especially noteworthy is the multidecadal Atlantic warming that began in the late 1990s, because recent research suggests that it has influenced Indo-Pacific climate, the character of the ENSO cycle, and the hiatus in global surface warming. Discovery of these pantropical interactions provides a pathway forward for improving predictions of climate variability in the current climate and for refining projections of future climate under different anthropogenic forcing scenarios.</P>

        Overexpression of TTRAP inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells

        TTRAP is a multi-functional protein that is involved in multiple aspects of cellular functions including cell proliferation, apoptosis and the repair of DNA damage. Here, we demonstrated that the lentivirus-mediated overexpression of TTRAP significantly inhibited cell growth and induced apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells. The ectopic TTRAP suppressed the growth and colony formation capacity of two osteosarcoma cell lines, U2OS and Saos-2. Cell apoptosis was induced in U2OS cells and the cell cycle was arrested at G2/M phase in Saos-2 cells. Exogenous expression of TTRAP in serum-starved U2OS and Saos-2 cells induced an increase in caspase-3/-7 activity and a decrease in cyclin B1 expression. In comparison with wild-type TTRAP, mutations in the 5`-tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase activity of TTRAP, in particular TTRAPE152A, showed decreased inhibitory activity on cell growth. These results may aid in clarifying the physiological functions of TTRAP, especially its roles in the regulation of cell growth and tumorigenesis. [BMB Reports 2013; 46(2): 113-118].

        Parameter optimization method for antimisalignment of inductive power transfer system based on genetic algorithm

        The mutual inductance parameters change from time to time. When conducting dynamic wireless power transfer using an inductive power transfer system, it results in larger fluctuation of output power. Therefore, a parameter optimization method is necessary to improve the stability of inductive power transfer system during dynamic misalignment. In this study, a nonlinear programing model with objective function of minimum voltage gain difference was established by taking S-LCC topology as an example. Genetic algorithm and nonlinear programming were combined to optimize the compensating parameters of the system and to realize minimum fluctuation of output voltage gain of the system within any given range of mutual inductance parameters. Optimization results show that output stability can be realized by adjusting the compensation capacitance in the primary side. The feasibility of the theory was verified through stimulation and test prototype. Test results show that when the mutual induction range is from 29.3 μH to 84.3 μH, the voltage gain of the system varies from 0.67 to 0.77. The fluctuation ratio of voltage gain is 6.7%, and the fluctuation ratio of voltage gain under the circumstance of resonance parameters is 40.2%.

        CVM을 통한 하이서울페스티벌의 가치평가

        본 연구는 축제의 가치를 최대지불의사액(WTP)을 통해 측정하고자 시도되었다. 연구대상이 된 하이서울페스티벌은 서울의 대표축제로 육성하고자 2003년부터 개최된 축제이다. 서울시는 이를 통해 관광객을 유치하고 문화관광지로서 서울의 이미지를 재정립하여 경제적 이익을 창출하고자 하는데 목표를 두었다. 하지만 해마다 상이한 콘셉트와 행사 개최장소의 변경으로 인해 축제의 정체성이 모호하며, 초기의 목표와는 달리 가시적인 성과를 얻고 있지 못한 실정이다. 이러한 문제점에 착안하여 축제개최장소별 CVM을 활용한 가치추정을 통해 하이서울페스티벌의 가치를 추정하고, 향후 정책적 시사점을 도출하고자 본 연구를 수행하였다. 연구결과 축제개최장소별 비이용가치는 상이한 것으로 나타났는데 이는 각 장소별 프로그램의 성격과 개최장소의 특징에 기인한 것으로 추측된다. 또한 하이서울페스티벌의 비이용가치 추정을 통한 경제적 가치는 422억 원으로 나타나 현재 시민들이 느끼는 편익의 가치는 큰 것으로 나타났다. 즉 향후 하이서울페스티벌의 기획에 있어서는 장소성을 가진 장소에서의 특성화된 프로그램의 개발을 통해 방문객들의 만족도를 향상시켜 축제의 가치를 높이는 방안이 검토되어야 할 것이다. This article estimates the total evaluation of the festival and investigates the determinants of visitors' WTP(willingness to pay) for the festival. Hi Seoul Festival is a way to introduce Korean culture to other foreigners as well as to serve as an economic and cultural stimulus for Seoul. A contingent evaluation survey was conducted and a total of 763 useful samples were collected. The results show that the evaluation of the festival were different across three different WTPs which were calculated as 2,846 won, 3,321 won, and 4,838 won. The annual total benefits value is calculated as 433.767 billion Korean won. And visitors' sex and visitors' satisfaction(keep up festival, need to modify) was a important determinants of the WTP for a visit. These findings may provide guidance managers and practitioners who help maintain the Hi festival.

      • Clinicopathologic and Prognostic Significance of Carboxyl Terminus of Hsp70-interacting Protein in HBV-related Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        Background: Many factors, including molecular ones, were demonstrated to be associated with long-term prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus far, the expression and clinicopathologic and prognostic significance of the carboxyl terminus of Hsp70-interacting protein (CHIP) in B-type hepatitis virus (HBV)-related HCC remain unknown. Materials and Methods: CHIP expression was detected by immunohistochemical staining of surgical samples from 79 patients with HCC with HBsAg positivity. In addition, correlations with clinicopathologic parameters and patient survival were evaluated. Results: It was found that positive CHIP staining was observed in tumor, but not non-tumor, tissues. High expression of CHIP was significantly related to larger tumor size, with marginally significant associations noted for presence of portal vein invasion and higher serum a-fetoprotein level. In addition, univariate analysis showed that high CHIP expression was a powerful predictor for dismal overall and disease-free survival. However, independent prognostic implications of CHIP were not proven in multivariate Cox regression test. Conclusions: CHIP is overexpressed in HBV-related HCC and is associated with unfavorable biological behavior as well as poor prognosis. However, its prognostic role needs to be further validated.

        Optimization Design of Zero-Voltage-Switching Control in S-LCC Inductive Power Transfer System Under Dynamic Coupling Coefficient

        To obtain high effi ciency and reduced EMI in the inductive power transfer (IPT) system, it is crucial to understand the zerovoltage-switching (ZVS) control of the inverter. The frequency tracking method is usually adopted to achieve ZVS operation. However, the eff ect of frequency bifurcation in the series-inductor-capacitor-capacitor (S-LCC) system results in frequency tracking failure. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a parameter optimization design for the S-LCC system to achieve ZVS operation under the dynamic coupling coeffi cient. The analytical solution of the bifurcation frequency of the S-LCC system and the boundary conditions of the frequency bifurcation are derived through the fundamental harmonic model. Based on this boundary condition, a parameter design strategy with no frequency bifurcation under the dynamic coupling coeffi cient is established. The maximum critical coupling coeffi cient of the system is obtained by numerical analysis. Then, a frequency tracking strategy based on a phase-locked loop is given to realize ZVS control. Within the critical coupling coeffi cient, frequency bifurcation does not occur in the S-LCC topology. Finally, a 2 kW test prototype is built up to verify the feasibility of the theory.

        A Study on the Navigator Matching Platform for Medical Tourism Services

        Medical tourism is recognized as a high value-added industry due to its longer stay and more useful costs than general tourism, and is growing rapidly around the world, especially in Asia. In addition, medical tourism is a new form of tourism that combines medical services with tourism activities such as recreation, leisure, and cultural activities, nowadays, medical tourism is emphasizing the combination of medical and tourism. Although Korea medical system and clinic have excellent medical equipment and infrastructure, it is not consistent with policy support and legislation. That have make it difficult for consumers to choose clinics for medical tourism. Therefore, it is necessary to provide customized information to the clinics that consumers want to match each other's services. In particular, it is aimed at consumers with simple procedures and cosmetic purposes, especially at small hospitals. In this paper, we propose a customized service platform that matches users seeking clinics and also medical tourism. Also we can easy to reservation clinic for medical tour.

      • Research on Mathematical Problem Posing: What We Know and Where We Are Going

        There is a long history of integrating mathematical problem solving into school curricula. In contrast, problem-posing research is a relatively new endeavor. Nevertheless, there have been efforts to incorporate problem posing into school mathematics at different educational levels around the world in the past two decades. These efforts indicate interest among many researchers and practitioners in making problem posing a more prominent feature of classroom instruction. In this plenary, I will present the current state of knowledge in problem-posing research and suggest some directions for future study. In particular, my discussion will be organized based on the following ten questions: (1) Why is problem posing important in school mathematics? (2) Are teachers and students capable of posing important mathematical problems? (3) Can students and teachers be effectively trained to pose high quality problems? (4) What do we know about the cognitive processes of problem posing? (5) How are problem-posing skills related to problem-solving skills? (6) Is it feasible to use problem posing as a measure of creativity and mathematical learning outcomes? (7) How are problem-posing activities included in mathematics curricula? (8) What does a classroom look like when students engage in problem-posing activities? (9) How can technology be used in problem-posing activities? (10) What do we know about the impact of engaging in problem-posing activities on student outcomes? Each of these questions represents a rich area for problem-posing research and I will summarize what we know as a field, and then point out possible future directions of research on mathematical problem posing.

        Purification of recombinant Pfu DNA polymerase using a new JK110 resin (Short Communication)

        purification of recombinant Pfu DNA polymerase expresed in Escherichia coli was studied. The lysedoC to denature E. coli protein, followed by chromatography on JK110 and Sephadex G-75.The purified protein had comparable activity to the comercialy obtained Pfu in both DNA polymerase and PCR am-plification. The final product had a specific activity of 17,600 U/mg and 149,60 U of Pfu DNA polymerase was ob-tained from 500 ml culture. JK110 has worked well in our study and appears to be a new method of choice for purifi-cation of Pfu DNA polymerase.

      • Predicting Successful Recanalization in Patients with Native Coronary Chronic Total Occlusion: The Busan CTO Score

        <P><B><I>Background:</I></B> The optimal strategy to manage chronic total occlusion (CTO) remains unclear. The Japanese CTO multicenter registry (J-CTO) score is an established tool for predicting successful recanalization. However, it does not take into account nonangiographic predictors for final technique success. In the present study, we designed and tested a scoring model called the Busan single-center CTO registry (B-CTO) score combining clinical and angiographic characteristics to predict successful CTO recanalization in Korean patients. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> Prospectively enrolled CTO patients (<I>n</I> = 438) undergoing coronary intervention (1999-2015) were assessed. The B-CTO score comprises 6 independent predictors: age 60-74 years and lesion length ≥20 mm were assigned 1 point each, while age ≥75 years, female gender, lesion location in the right coronary artery, blunt stump, and bending >45° were assigned 2 points each. For each predictor, the points assigned were based on the associated odds ratio by multivariate analysis. The lesions were classified into 4 groups according to the summation of points scored to assess the probability of successful CTO recanalization: easy (score 0-1), intermediate (score 2-3), difficult (score 4-5), and very difficult (score ≥6). CTO opening was designated as the primary endpoint regardless of the interventional era or the skill of the operator. <B><I>Results:</I></B> The final success rate for B-CTO was 81.1%. The probability of successful recanalization for patient groups classified as easy (<I>n</I> = 64), intermediate (<I>n</I> = 148), difficult (<I>n</I> = 134), and very difficult (<I>n</I> = 92) was 95.3, 86.5, 79.1 and 65.2%, respectively (<I>p</I> for trend <0.001). When compared to the J-CTO, the B-CTO score demonstrated a significant improvement in discrimination as indicated by the area under the receiver-operator characteristic curve (AUC 0.083; 95% CI 0.025-0.141), with a positive integrated discrimination improvement of 0.042 and a net reclassification improvement of 56.0%. <B><I>Conclusions:</I></B> The B-CTO score has been designed and validated in Korean patients with native coronary CTO and is an improved tool for predicting successful recanalization. Wider application of the B-CTO score remains to be explored.</P>
