      • Metal ion interaction of water-soluble copolymers containing carboxylic acid groups in aqueous phase by membrane filtration technique

Pizarro, Guadalupe Del C.,Marambio, Oscar G.,Jeria-Orell, Manuel,Huerta, Margarita R.,Rodrí,guez, Oscar O.,Rivas, Bernabé,L.,Geckeler, Kurt E. Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2007 Journal of applied polymer science Vol.105 No.5

<P>This article reports the synthesis of poly(N-maleoylglycine-co-itaconic acid) by radical copolymerization under different feed mole ratios and its properties to remove various metal ions, such as Cu(II), Cr(III), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Fe(III), in aqueous phase with the liquid-phase polymer-based retention(LPR) technique. The interactions of inorganic ions with the hydrophilic water-soluble polymer were determined as a function of pH and filtration factor. Metal ion retention was found to strongly depend on the pH. Metal ion retention increased as pH and MG content units in the macromolecular backbone increased. The copolymers were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, intrinsic viscosity, molecular weight, and polydispersity have been determined for the copolymers. Copolymer and polymer–metal complex thermal behavior was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) techniques under nitrogen atmosphere. The thermal decomposition temperatures (TDT) were influenced by the copolymer composition. The copolymers present lower TDT than the polymer–metal complex with the same copolymer composition. All copolymers present a single Tg, indicating the formation of random copolymers. A slight deviation of the Tg for the copolymers and its complexes can be observed. The copolymer Tg is higher than the Tg value for the polymer–metal complexes. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007</P>

Protective Effect of Glycomacropeptide on the Atopic Dermatitis-Like Dysfunctional Skin Barrier in Rats

        Mariela Jimenez,Fabiola C. Munoz,Daniel Cervantes-Garcıa,Maritza M. Cervantes,Alicia Hernandez-Mercado,Berenice Barron-Garcıa,Jose L. Moreno Hernandez-Duque,Adrian Rodrıguez-Carlos,Bruno Rivas-Santiag 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.11

The maintenance of a healthy skin barrier is crucial to prevent and treat atopic dermatitis (AD) lesions and avoid infections. Glycomacropeptide (GMP) is a bioactive peptide that has demonstrated promising results as an anti-inflammatory and antipruritic therapy for experimental AD. This study aimed to analyze the effect of GMP on impaired cutaneous barrier-related signs in a rat model of AD lesions. AD-like dermatitis was induced on the skin by repeated topical applications of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, and animals were orally administered GMP before or after AD induction. The expression of skin structural proteins and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) was evaluated by immunoblot or immunohistochemistry, epidermal thickening was evaluated by histochemistry, the level of IFN-γ and changes in the microbiota were evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the quantity of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was evaluated by gas chromatography. GMP administration significantly increased filaggrin, β-defensin 2, and cathelicidin-related AMP expression in AD-like lesions. Involucrin expression was not modified. In GMP-treated animals, epidermal thickening and IFN-γ expression were strongly reduced in damaged skin. GMP treatment impacted the skin microbiota and prevented Staphylococcus aureus colonization, which is associated with AD. In addition, high levels of Bifidobacterium were detected in the feces of GMP-treated animals, and the acetic acid and butyric acid contents increased in animals prophylactically administered GMP. These results suggest that GMP markedly prevents or reverses skin barrier damage in rat AD-like lesions through a bifidogenic effect that induces fecal SCFA production with prolonged treatment. Our findings provide evidence that GMP may represent an optimum strategy for the therapy of the dysfunctional cutaneous barrier in AD.

Improvement of Ka-band satellite link availability for real-time IP-based video contribution

        G. Berretta,P. Dvorak,M. Luglio,L. Luini,C. Riva,C. Roseti,F. Zampognaro 한국통신학회 2017 ICT Express Vol.3 No.3

New High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems allow high throughput IP uplinks/contribution at Ka-band frequencies for relatively lower costs when compared to broadcasting satellite uplinks at Ku band. This technology offers an advantage for live video contribution from remote areas, where the terrestrial infrastructure may not be adequate. On the other hand, the Ka-band is more subject to impairments due to rain or bad weather. This paper addresses the target system specification and provides an optimized approach for the transmission of IP-based video flows through HTS commercial services operating at Ka-band frequencies. In particular, the focus of this study is on the service requirements and the propagation analysis that provide a reference architecture to improve the overall link availability. The approach proposed herein leads to the introduction of a new concept of live service contribution using pairs of small satellite antennas and cheap satellite terminals.

Current Status and Applications of Integrated Safety Assessment and Simulation Code System for ISA

        J.M. Izquierdo,J. Hortal,M. Sanchez Perea,E. Melendez,C. Queral,J. Rivas-Lewicky 한국원자력학회 2017 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.49 No.2

This paper reviews current status of the unified approach known as integrated safetyassessment (ISA), as well as the associated SCAIS (simulation codes system for ISA) computerplatform. These constitute a proposal, which is the result of collaborative actionamong the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), University of Madrid (UPM), and NFQ SolutionsS.L, aiming to allow independent regulatory verification of industry quantitative riskassessments. The content elaborates on discussions of the classical treatment of time inconventional probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) sequences and states importantconclusions that can be used to avoid systematic and unacceptable underestimation of thefailure exceedance frequencies. The unified ISA method meets this challenge by couplingdeterministic and probabilistic mutual influences. The feasibility of the approach is illustratedwith some examples of its application to a real size plant.
