MBE Growth and Transport Properties of MnGeP2 under Various P Pressure
최정용,황영훈,김재희,조성래,C-C. Tsai 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.6
We have studied the magneto-transport properties of ferromagnetic MnGeP2 semiconductor thin films deposited on GaAs(100) by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) under diverse beam equivalent pressures (BEP) of phosphorus. The growth direction was along the c-axis of the film, whose surface was very rough. The temperature-dependent electrical resistance results strongly support the presence of a ferromagnetic phase transition in the chalcopyrite MnGeP2 thin film around 320 K. On the other hand, it shows an anisotropic magneto-resistance and an anomalous Hall effect in p-type MnGeP2 thin films, indicating the presence of spin-polarized hole carriers in MnGeP2. We have successfully observed magnetic domains at room temperature by using magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Ferrimagnetism in strained Fe2As thin films on Si(001)
Hwang, Younghun,Choi, Jeongyong,Cho, Sunglae,Ketterson, John B.,Tsai, C.-C. American Institute of Physics 2009 JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS - Vol.105 No.7
<P>We present the structural and magnetic properties of Fe2As thin films grown on Si(100) by molecular beam epitaxy. From the reflection high-energy electron diffraction and x- ray diffraction patterns, the orientation of Fe2As film on Si(100) was found to be a c-axis in the tetragonal crystal structure. The tetragonal Fe2As thin film exhibited ferrimagnetic (FIM) ordering at room temperature. The magnetic moment of Fe2As was 0.1 mu(B)/unit cell determined from the saturated magnetic moment. The observed FIM in Fe2As films was attributed to the strain in the film. (c) 2009 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.3068626]</P>

In this work, a bone drilling system was designed to quantify “hand feeling”, which can benefit surgeons to be more acquainted with bone hardness. A bi-axial force/torque sensor is mounted on the bone drilling system in order to measure the thrust force and the torque caused by drilling in bones. The system is assembled with a motorized stage, which is directly integrated with a surgical handpiece by an adjustable holder, to drill into various bones (porcine mandible, porcine femur, porcine rib) at different feed speeds and spindle speeds. The results reveal that the feed speed is positively corresponded with force and torque. However, the effect of spindle speed on force and torque is negligible. In addition, drilling bones without spraying water can cause the drilling temperature to increase to 73.3°C. According to the data from the experiments, the exact force and torque during bone drilling can be predicted with the given parameters. Thus, surgeons are capable of preventing the use of excessive force during bone drilling.

Objective: A series of experiment were conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing a part of soybean meal (SBM) at 6% of broiler diets with fermented soybean meal (FSBM) obtained by single or two-stage fermentation by measuring growth performance, antioxidant activity in the jejunum and distal intestinal microflora. Methods: Soybean meal samples were prepared by single-stage fermentation using Bacillus velezensis (Bv) (FSBMB), or Lactobacillus spp. (as commercial control) (FSBML). Additional SBM sample was prepared by two-stage fermentation using Bv and subsequently using Lactobacillus brevis ATCC 367 (Lb) (FSBMB+L). Enzyme activity, chemical composition, trichloroethanoic acid-nitrogen solubility index (TCA-NSI) and antioxidant activity were measured. Then, in an in vivo study, 320 Ross308 broilers were divided into four groups with ad libitum supply of feed and water. Four groups were fed either a corn-soybean meal diet (SBM), or one of fermented SBM diets (FSBMB+L, FSBMB, and FSBML). Growth, serum characteristics, microflora, and the mRNA expression of selected genes were measured. Results: Compared to SBM, FSBMB+L contained lower galacto-oligosaccharide, allergic protein, and trypsin inhibitor, and higher TCA-NSI by about three times (p<0.05). Reducing power and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging ability correlated positively with the TCA-NSI content in FSBM. Growth performances were not significantly different among four groups. In jejunum of 35-day-old broilers, partial replacement of SBM by FSBMB+L increased the activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase (CAT), and the FSBMB group had the highest catalase activity (p<0.05). Partial replacement of SBM by FSBM increased relative mRNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) (p<0.05); however, FSBMB+L increased CAT mRNA level to 5 times of the control (p<0.05). Conclusion: Using Bv- and Lb-processed SBM through two-stage fermentation to partially replace 6% of diets will improve the gut's antioxidant activity under commercial breeding in broilers.

Vertical distributions of lateral forces on base isolated structures considering higher mode effects
Tsai, C.S.,Chen, Wen-Shin,Chen, Bo-Jen,Pong, Wen-Shen Techno-Press 2006 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.23 No.5
Base isolation technology has been accepted as a feasible and attractive way in improving seismic resistance of structures. The seismic design of new seismically isolated structures is mainly governed by the Uniform Building Code (UBC-97) published by the International Conference of Building Officials. In the UBC code, the distribution formula of the inertial (or lateral) forces leads to an inverted triangular shape in the vertical direction. It has been found to be too conservative for most isolated structures through experimental, computational and real earthquake examinations. In this paper, four simple and reasonable design formulae, based on the first mode of the base-isolated structures, for the lateral force distribution on isolated structures have been validated by a multiple-bay three-story base-isolated steel structure tested on the shaking table. Moreover, to obtain more accurate results for base-isolated structures in which higher mode contributions are more likely expected during earthquakes, another four inertial force distribution formulae are also proposed to include higher mode effects. Besides the experimental verification through shaking table tests, the vertical distributions of peak accelerations computed by the proposed design formulae are in good agreement with the recorded floor accelerations of the USC University Hospital during the Northridge earthquake.

At present, the environmental regulation of Taiwanese traditional poultry farm is based on the information collected by the ambient temperature and humidity sensor. However, this method is unable to know the situation of the poultry directly. The purpose of this study is to collect poultry body surface temperature information directly by the infrared thermal imager. The relationship between poultry body surface temperature and temperature-humidity index (THI) is studied for estimating the actual feeling of poultry at different conditions. The Raspberry Pi, infrared thermal imaging sensor, environmental sensors were integrated for collecting the poultry body temperature and environmental information. The collected poultry infrared thermal images were divided into head, foot and wing different areas for the analysis. The environment temperature, humidity, air velocity and poultry surface temperature were continuous recorded for four weeks. The measured chicken’s surface temperature from infrared image sensor changes with the THI. The temperature change of the chicken’s foot is larger than the temperature of chicken’s head, and wing. The correlation between poultry surface temperature and THI, and temperature-humidity-velocity index (THVI) were calculated. According to the results, the correlation between poultry surface temperature and THI is higher than the correlation between poultry surface temperature and THVI. It shows that THI impacts on the poultry surface temperature. The poultry surface temperature can be detected by the infrared camera for poultry house environment control.
