This article presents FPGA implementation of a mobile inverted pendulum robot as a platform for implementation of control and sensor fusion algorithms in an inertial navigation system. In this paper we investigate the performance of digital PID control and Kalman filter algorithms. A test platform for tuning Kalman filter is designed using optical encoders as a standard reference. PWM signal generation and quadrature phase decoding of encoder pulses is implemented using hardware description language in FPGA. The values from the inertial sensors and quadrature phase decoded values are fed into MicroBlaze, a 32-bit soft-core RISC processor, within the FPGA where Kalman filtering and PID control are implemented. The overall system demonstrates the use of low cost inertial sensors to balance a two wheeled robot. The system at present is able to balance on its own. The complete system stands as an extremely reconfigurable FPGA based platform to facilitate future modifications, updates and enhancements in the original system with more complex control and sensor fusion techniques.

The present work, Cr doped ZnO nanoceramics abbreviated as Zn1-xCrxO (x=0, 0.01, 0.03) synthesized by mechanical alloying. The structural, morphological, dielectric and optical properties of the synthesized samples were studied by using X-raydifraction (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic analysis (FE-SEM), UV–Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis)and Impedance analyzer respectively. The structural parameters were measured by Rietveld method. The result shows theformation of single phase nanoceramics with hexagonal wurtzite structure with space group P63mc. The crystallite size wasfound to decrease with increase in Cr concentration (~ 20 nm) and broadening of XRD peak exists in the samples. FE-SEMresult shows that incorporation of Cr changes the surface morphology of ZnO. The band gap energy (Eg) at room temperaturewas measured using Tauc relation and was found to decreases with increase in Cr concentration. The dielectric constant (ε)value of ZnO decreases with Cr doping and with increase in concentration the peak shifted towards higher temperature region.

<P>A coupled key phase diagram study and critical evaluation and optimization of all available experimental data of the Li2O-MgO-SiO2 system was performed to obtain a set of Gibbs energy functions to reproduce all the reliable phase equilibria and thermodynamic data. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements and equilibration/quenching experiments were performed in the Li2SiO3-MgO and Li4SiO4-Mg2SiO4 sections, respectively, using sealed Pt capsules to prevent the volatile loss of Li. According to the present experimental results, Li2MgSiO4 is the only compound present in the Li4SiO4-Mg2SiO4 isopleth, which shows a peritectic melting at 1465 +/- 6 degrees C (1738 +/- 6 K). The Modified Quasichemical Model, which considers short-range ordering in the melt, was employed to describe the thermodynamic properties of the liquid phase. The Li4SiO4-Li2MgSiO4 and Mg2SiO4-rich solid solutions were modeled using the Compound Energy Formalism.</P>

<P>Insulin-secreting beta cells together with glucagon-producing alpha cells play an essential role in maintaining the optimal blood glucose level in the body, so the development of selective probes for imaging of these cell types in live islets is highly desired. Herein we report the development of a 2glucosamine-based two-photon fluorescent probe, TP-beta, that is suitable for imaging of beta cells in live pancreatic islets from mice. Flow cytometry studies confirmed that TP-beta is suitable for isolation of primary beta cells. Moreover, two-photon imaging of TP-beta-stained pancreatic islets showed brightly stained beta cells in live islets. Insulin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays revealed that 'TP-beta has no effect on glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from the stained islet. Finally, to develop a more convenient islet imaging application, we combined our recently published alpha-cell-selective probe TP-alpha with TP-beta to make a 'TP islet cocktail'. This unique dye cocktail enabled single excitation (820 nm) and simultaneous dual-color imaging of alpha cells (green) and beta cells (red) in live pancreatic islets. This robust TP islet cocktail may serve as a valuable tool for basic diabetic studies.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A critical evaluation and thermodynamic optimization of all available experimental data of the Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 system at 1 atm pressure was performed for the first time to obtain a set of consistent Gibbs energy functions of all phases in the system. The Gibbs energy of liquid oxide solution was described using the Modified Quasichemical Model considering the formation of LiAlO2 associate component for charge compensation effect. Various solid solutions were modeled based on their crystal structures. The obtained Gibbs energy functions can reproduce all available and reliable experimental data from 298 K to above liquidus temperatures. With the Gibbs energy description for each phase, any phase diagram and thermodynamic properties of this system and its sub-binaries can be calculated. The present thermodynamic database was applied to the thermodynamic analysis of the selective crystallization in glass-ceramics.</P>

Track sports such as “Short track” and “Speed skating” are some of the winter sporting discipline dominated by South Korea which have high hopes for the upcoming 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. Despite the winter sports being in the limelight, training of the seasonal sports are not only problematic due to accessibility but also because of financial reasons due to which, dry land training such as slide board exercise has been considered by coaches to enhance endurance, agility, balance, body composition, muscular strength, proprioception, as well as cardiorespiratory fitness. Although the exercise was initially developed for sports specific off the ice training, slide board training has been also effective for recreational purposes, conditioning, functional rehabilitation for ACL injuries as well as activities involving lateral movement. Similarly, an increased demand of sports oriented fitness equipment’s and simulators have been seen in the field of sports however, without substantial biomechanical evidence as well as interactive visual feedback of performance to the user. Hence, the purpose of the study was to provide quantitative data of skating maneuver performed on sliding board for developing augmented reality based feedback skating simulator.

A series of 2-arylquinazolinones with structural homology to known 3-arylisoquinolines were designed and synthesized in order to develop safe. effective, and selective cytotoxic agents targeting topoisomerases (topos). 2-Arylquinzolinones with various substitutions on the aromatic rings were obtained by thermal cyclodehydration/dehydrogenation on reacting anthranilamides and benzaldehydes. The compounds had superior topo l-inhibitory activities but were generally inactive against topo IIα, Among the 6-methyl-, 6-amino-, and 7-methylquinazolinones, 6-amino-substituted derivatives displayed potent cytotoxicity at submicromolar to nanomolar concentrations against human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (HCT-15), human ductal breast epithelial tumor cells (T47D), and cervical cancer cells (HeLa). There was a good correlation between topo I inhibition and the cytotoxic effects of 6-aminoquinazolinones. Docking models demonstrated that topo I inhibition by these compounds is owing to intercalation and H-bond interactions with the DNA bases and amino acid residues at the enzymatic site.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Biological pretreatment of polysaccharidic wastes (PWs) is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to improve the digestibility and utilization of these valuable substrates in dual-stage biohythane production. In order to reduce the prolonged incubation time and loss of carbohydrate during the pretreatment of PWs with <I>Aspergillus fumigatus</I>, a systematic optimization using Taguchi methodology resulted in an unprecedented recovery of soluble carbohydrates (362.84 mg g−1) within 5 days. The disruption and fragmentation of lignocellulosic structures in PWs, and possible saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose components, increased its digestibility. A dual-stage biohythane production with pretreated PWs showed increased yield (214.13 mL g−1 VSadded), which was 56% higher than the corresponding value with the untreated PWs. This resulted in 47% higher energy recovery as biohythane in pretreated biomass compared to untreated biomass. Optimized fungal pretreatment is, therefore, an effective method to improve the digestibility of PWs and its subsequent conversion to biohythane.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Optimization of fungal pretreatment reduced the pretreatment time and sugar loss. </LI> <LI> Optimized fungal pretreatment solubilized 53% of the total sugar. </LI> <LI> Dual-stage biohythane process resulted in 62% reduction in TS in pretreated biomass. </LI> <LI> Energy recovery as biohythane improved by 47% with fungal pretreated biomass. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
