N/A Background : Axillary osmidrosis is a distressing problem characterized by and unpleasant odor, profuse sweating, and occasionally staining of clothes that may handicap those affected socially, psychologically and in the work place. Various types of surgical procedures have been developed for the treatment of axillary osmidrosis. However, it is still not clear whether which type of surgery can provide the best long-term results. Objective : We evaluated the long-term(more than 2 years) follow-up resole of subcutaneous tissue remover and Carbon Dioxide(CO_2) laser for surgical treatment(Kim`s operative method) of axillary osmidrosis retrospectively. Methods : The number of patients who had been surgically operated wase 132 and among them, 62 patients were interviewed by telephone. The degree of recurrence, scar, satisfaction, the causes of dissatisfaction, and recommendation were evaluated. Results : Thirty-eight of tile 62 patients(61.3%) had no recurrence, Twenty-one patients(33.9%) of the 62 patients had rarely scar, Forty-five patients(72.6%) had a feeling of satisfaction. Conclusion : This combined method has the advantages of a high success rate, low complication rate and Ina scarring for the treatment of axillary osmidrosis baaed on the long-term evaluation. We attempted to identify the difference of the immune function in schizophrenia and major depressive disorder and to compare its relationship with several variables such as symptom severity, diagnostic subtype, and number of admission by measuring the serum immunoglobulin and total hemolytic complement activity. Fifteen schizophrenics and 15 major depressive disorder patients were studied and 16 healthy young adults were recruited as control. Schizophrenics and major depressive disorder patients had undergone a two week drug-free period before the study. There was no statistical difference of age and sex between patients and control subjects. The results of this study were as follows : 1) Humoral immune parameters of schizophrenia and major depressive disorder patients group were not different from those of normal control group. The trend for increased Ig A, M and decreased Ig G was found in both patient groups, while the trend for decreased CH50 in schizophrenics and increased CH50 in major depressive disorder patients was found. 2) Firsty-admitted depressed patients showed significantly increased Ig A and Ig M concentration compared to the control group. 3) The depressed patients, whose symptoms were less severe in HDRS score, showed significantly increased Ig A compared to the control group. On the other hand, positive schizophrenics showed significantly increased Ig M compared to the control group. In conclusion, these findings suggest changes of humoral immunity in the major mental illnesses are epiphenomenon induced by stress or secondary reaction dependent upon the disease process. Since many factors are involved in the changes of immune function induced by stress, further integrated research for relationship of stress, human behavior, immune system and neuroendocrine system will be needed. Also more specific parameters of immune function for the homogeneous patients group will be required to assess some identified changes of the immune system in major mental illnesses.

The dramatic variations in structure and internal stress in an amorphous silicon carbide film (a-SiC) induced by forming process have been reported extensively. Vapor-depositions of a-SiC film were simulated by molecular dynamics simulation employing the Tersoff potential. To understand effect of substrate temperature that is one of the most important factors involved in the changes in structure and intrinsic stress, the vapor-depositions at various substrate temperatures (500-2500 K) were performed. Then, the MD simulations of cooling to 298 K were carried out. For both cooled and as-deposited a-SiC films, the analyses of structure and internal stress with deposition process parameters entailed the calculation of density, chemical order, and in-plane stress [(σ_(xx)+σ_(yy))/2].

Bluntness is inevitable at the tip of a sharp indenter such as the Berkovich indenter used in nanoindentation experiments; this bluntness causes the hardness values observed at low contact depths (<~100 nm) to fall below the Nix and Gao model curve. We present an indentation size effect (ISE) model that extends the available contact depth for ISE application down to several tens of nanometers by considering the tip bluntness effect. The present model reflects the effect of tip bluntness on the distribution of geometrically necessary dislocations needed to accommodate the blunted tip, and the change in the ratio of plastic to total contact depth with contact depth. We applied the present model to nanoindentation results for annealed and strain-hardened Cu, and to previously reported nanoindentation results for surface-nanocrystallized Al-alloy. Good fit was observed between the present model and the hardness results over the full contact depth range. (Received July 22, 2004)
