Molecular Motor-Powered Shuttles along Multi-walled Carbon Nanotube Tracks

        Sikora, Auré,lien,Ramó,n-Azcó,n, Javier,Kim, Kyongwan,Reaves, Kelley,Nakazawa, Hikaru,Umetsu, Mitsuo,Kumagai, Izumi,Adschiri, Tadafumi,Shiku, Hitoshi,Matsue, Tomokazu,Hwang, Wonmuk,T American Chemical Society 2014 NANO LETTERS Vol.14 No.2

As a complementary tool to nanofluidics, biomolecular-based transport is envisioned for nanotechnological devices. We report a new method for guiding microtubule shuttles on multi-walled carbon nanotube tracks, aligned by dielectrophoresis on a functionalized surface. In the absence of electric field and in fluid flow, alignment is maintained. The directed translocation of kinesin propelled microtubules has been investigated using fluorescence microscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of microtubules gliding along carbon nanotubes.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

        The e-semiotics of luxury

Anne-Flore Maman Larraufie,Aure´lie Kourdoughli 한국마케팅과학회 2014 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.5 No.3

The relationship that luxury brands have with the digital world is a love-and-hate one:brands wonder how to use it without damaging their identity and their spirit of luxury, while relying upon a distribution and communication network with a priori counter-luxury characteristics. Since luxury consumption assumes semiotic metacognition from theclients, it makes sense to understand how a new semiotic e-system is set, enabling the audience to acknowledge the luxury nature of the brands on display even if present in an a priori counter-luxury medium. This paper is focused on such identification. Using content analysis and Perceian semiotics, we identify two e-semiotics systems, with their various representamen and interpretants. We observe a shift from brand communication to product communication and frompurchase experience and context to price. The definition of what luxury is through digital tools is thus specific to its context, and yet not similar to its offline definition.

      • Mobile Telephony: The Influencing Factors of Using A Mobile Phone by Undergraduate and Graduate Students in Three Global Countries

        Gerard Fillion,Jean-Pierre Booto Ekionea,Aure,lia Nicole Nguejo,Kathy Gonye KINFORMS 2020 Management Review Vol.15 No.1

Individual adoption of technology has been studied extensively in the workplace, but far less attention has been paid to adoption of technology in the household (Brown & Venkatesh, 2005). Obviously, mobile phone is now integrated into our daily life. Indeed, according to International Data Corporation (IDC), the market reached 1.472 billion mobile phones sold in the world in 2017 (ZDNet, 2018). In addition, according to Statista, there was 4.77 billion mobile phone users worldwide in 2017 while the population was reaching 7.6 billion people, and there will be 5.07 billion mobile phone users worldwide by 2019 (Statista, 2018). The purpose of this study is then to pursue the investigation on the determining factors that make such people around the world are so using the mobile phone. On the basis of the model of acceptance of technology in household (MATH) developed by Brown and Venkatesh (2005) to verify the determining factors in intention to adopt a computer in household by American people, this study extends this moderator-type research model to examine the determining factors in the use of mobile phone in household by undergraduate and graduate students from four universities within three countries over the world. Data were randomly gathered from 750 undergraduate and graduate students from Yaounde in Cameroon, Kinshasa in Congo, and New Brunswick in Canada who own a mobile phone. Data analysis was performed using the structural equation modeling software Partial Least Squares (PLS). The results revealed, among others, that two-third of the variables examined in the study, including the three new variables we added to the Brown and Venkatesh’s research model, showed to be determining factors in the use of mobile phone by undergraduate and graduate students.

Importance of Extract Standardization and In Vitro/Ex Vivo Assay Selection for the Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity of Botanicals: A Case Study on Three Rosmarinus officinalis L. Extracts

        Alvin Ibarra,Julien Cases,Antoine Bily,Kan He,Naisheng Bai,Marc Roller,Aure´lie Coussaert,Christophe Ripoll 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.5

The overproduction of free radicals and oxygen reactive species is suspected to be implicated in a wide range of metabolic reactions that can have pernicious consequences in the development of a variety of human diseases. Botanical extracts are sources of antioxidants that counteract both free radicals and oxygen reactive species. The processing conditions used in the botanical extraction may influence the antioxidant composition; therefore, different extracts from the same plant may have different antioxidant properties. To illustrate this fact, we conducted a study using three commercial rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) leaf extracts. The three extracts were standardized to contain, respectively, 20% carnosic acid, 40% ursolic acid, or 20% rosmarinic acid. They were evaluated for their total (hydrophilic+lipophilic) antioxidant effects on oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), their ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP), and their capacity to inhibit Cu2+-induced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation ex vivo. The ursolic acid extract showed the lowest antioxidant capacity on all models. The rosmarinic acid extract had an antioxidant capacity 1.5 times higher on ORAC and four times higher on FRAP than the carnosic acid extract. However, the carnosic acid extract was better than the rosmarinic acid extract in inhibiting the oxidation of LDL ex vivo. These results encourage conducting further studies to evaluate the carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid extracts in vivo. Our study offers an example of the importance of the extraction procedures, on which depends the nature of the antioxidant composition, and highlights interest to proceed with in vitro/ex vivo assay selection for the evaluation of the antioxidant properties of botanical extracts.

      • Ferromagnet-Free All-Electric Spin Hall Transistors

        Choi, Won Young,Kim, Hyung-jun,Chang, Joonyeon,Han, Suk Hee,Abbout, Adel,Saidaoui, Hamed Ben Mohamed,Manchon, Auré,lien,Lee, Kyung-Jin,Koo, Hyun Cheol American Chemical Society 2018 Nano letters Vol.18 No.12

The spin field-effect transistor, an essential building block for spin information processing, shows promise for energy-efficient computing. Despite steady progress, it suffers from a low-output signal because of low spin injection and detection efficiencies. We demonstrate that this low-output obstacle can be overcome by utilizing direct and inverse spin Hall effects for spin injection and detection, respectively, without a ferromagnetic component. The output voltage of our all-electric spin Hall transistor is about two orders of magnitude larger than that of previously reported spin transistors based on ferromagnets or quantum point contacts. Moreover, the symmetry of the spin Hall effect allows all-electric spin Hall transistors to effectively mimic n-type and p-type devices, opening a way of realizing the complementary functionality.
[FIG OMISSION]

Copy Number Gain of hsa-miR-569 at 3q26.2 Leads to Loss of TP53INP1 and Aggressiveness of Epithelial Cancers

        Chaluvally-Raghavan, P.,Zhang, F.,Pradeep, S.,Hamilton, Mark P.,Zhao, X.,Rupaimoole, R.,Moss, T.,Lu, Y.,Yu, S.,Pecot, Chad V.,Aure, Miriam R.,Peuget, S.,Rodriguez-Aguayo, C.,Han, H.D.,Zhang, D.,Venkat Cell Press 2014 CANCER CELL Vol.26 No.6

Small noncoding miRNAs represent underexplored targets of genomic aberrations and emerging therapeutic targets. The 3q26.2 amplicon is among the most frequent genomic aberrations in multiple cancer lineages including ovarian and breast cancers. We demonstrate that hsa-miR-569 (hereafter designated as miR569), which is overexpressed in a subset of ovarian and breast cancers, at least in part due to the 3q26.2 amplicon, alters cell survival and proliferation. Downregulation of TP53INP1 expression by miR569 is required for the effects of miR569 on survival and proliferation. Targeting miR569 sensitizes ovarian and breast cancer cells overexpressing miR569 to cisplatin by increasing cell death both in vitro and in vivo. Thus targeting miR569 could potentially benefit patients with the 3q26.2 amplicon and subsequent miR569 elevation.

Activity of sputtered gold particles layers towards glucose electrochemical oxidation in alkaline medium

        Aurélien Habrioux,Karine Servat,Thierry Girardeau,Philippe Guérin,Teko W. Napporn,K. Boniface Kokoh 한국물리학회 2011 Current Applied Physics Vol.11 No.5

The electrochemical activation of glucose was studied at the surface of gold particles prepared either by magnetron sputtering or water-in-oil microemulsion methods. At lower potentials smaller sputtered electrocatalysts (i.e. with Feret’s diameter lower than 5 nm) involved a remarkable activity, which was likely due to their electronic structures. It was suggested that the enhancement of the electrocatalytic performances at the surface of the electrodes composed of largest particles could be related to the formation of “sticking defects” in the nanomaterials.

      • THE INFLUENCE OF DESIGN ON LUXURY BRAND LOVE

        Aurélie Hemonnet-Goujot,Pierre Valette-Florence 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

While product design is intrinsically linked to brand building and to the definition of luxury, consumers’ sensitivity to luxury products and to design is usually addressed separately. Yet, for optimal marketing-oriented decisions, they need to be brought together. Furthermore, while design is intrinsically linked to luxury, little research focused on its influence on the symbolic and the economic value of brands. This research specifically delves into the mechanisms behind how brand-level attitudes can be influenced by product-level sensitivity to product design. Building on the value theory, it investigates to what extent the product design enhances luxury brands value. Based on a data set collected on 125 individuals, a partial least square analysis was used. It contributes and extends literature on branding, design and luxury in three distinct ways. Firstly, this research distinguishes two antecedents of the product design that are the social and the individual drivers. Secondly, it reveals the mediating role of the product design between social and individual drivers, on one hand, and luxury brands symbolic value (through brand love and brand equity), on the other hand. Thirdly, it confirms the creation of economic value through the positive influence on willingness to pay a premium price. In terms of managerial implications, this study reveals the importance for luxury brands to develop sensory branding through product design. It especially points out the added-value of design for luxury brands’ equity, its role in fostering brand love and in increasing luxury brands turnover.

Hydrodynamic characteristics of activated carbon in air- and water-fluidized beds

Aurél Ujhidy,György Bucsky,Jenö Németh 한국화학공학회 2008 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.25 No.5

The hydrodynamic characteristics of small hydrophobic activated carbon particles were determined in air flowing through both fixed and fluidized bed layers and water flowing through an inverse fluidized bed. Based on experimental data the Ergun-equation was corrected. A new relationship is proposed to predict the pressure drop in a fixed bed with gas flowing by using the minimum fluidizing velocity (umf) and particle terminal velocity (ut). Apparent density of oven-dried activated carbon increases with filling the internal pores by water. After the bed density reaches the density of water, the system switches from an inverse fluidized layer into the classical fluidized state. Finally, it has been demonstrated that the Reynolds number (Remf) at umf associated with the original Archimedes number (Ar) for gas-solid fluidized system and the modified Ar numbers characterizing the inverse fluidized beds lie on identical curves.

Computed tomographic assessment of retrograde urohydropropulsion in male dogs and prediction of stone composition using hounsfield unit in dogs and cats

        Aurélie Bruwier,Benjamin Godart,Laure Gatel,Dimitri Leperlier,Anne-Sophie Bedu 대한수의학회 2022 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.23 No.5

Background: Persistent uroliths after a cystotomy in dogs are a common cause of surgical failure. Objectives: This study examined the following: the success rate of retrograde urohydropropulsion in male dogs using non-enhanced computed tomography (CT), whether the CT mean beam attenuation values in Hounsfield Units (mHU) measured in vivo could predict the urolithiasis composition and whether the selected reconstruction kernel may influence the measured mHU. Methods: All dogs and cats that presented with lower urinary tract uroliths and had a non-enhanced CT preceding surgery were included. In male dogs, CT was performed after retrograde urohydropropulsion to detect the remaining urethral calculi. The percentage and location of persistent calculi were recorded. The images were reconstructed using three kernels, from smooth to ultrasharp, and the calculi mHU were measured. Results: Sixty-five patients were included in the study. The success rate of retrograde urohydropropulsion in the 45 male dogs was 55.6% and 86.7% at the first and second attempts, respectively. The predominant components of the calculi were cystine (20), struvite (15), calcium oxalate (8), and urate (7). The convolution kernel influenced the mHU values (p < 0.05). The difference in mHU regarding the calculus composition was better assessed using the smoother kernel. A mHU greater than 1,000 HU was predictive of calcium oxalate calculi. Conclusions: Non-enhanced CT is useful for controlling the success of retrograde urohydropropulsion. The mHU could allow a prediction of the calculus composition, particularly for calcium oxalate, which may help determine the therapeutic strategy.
