        Association between high sensitivity C-reactive protein and dietary intake in Vietnamese young women

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a strong independent predictor of future cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. We evaluated the relationship between hsCRP and dietary intake in apparently healthy young women living in southern Vietnam. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Serum hsCRP was measured and dietary intake data were obtained using the 1-day 24-hour recall method in women (n = 956; mean age, 25.0 ± 5.7 years) who participated in the International Collaboration Study for the Construction of Asian Cohort of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) in 2011. RESULTS: Women in the high risk group (> 3 mg/L) consumed fewer fruits and vegetables, total plant food, potassium, and folate than those in the low risk group (< 1 mg/L). A multiple regression analysis after adjusting for covariates revealed a significant negative association between hsCRP and fruit and vegetable consumption. A logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio (OR) of having a high hsCRP level in women with the highest quartiles of consumption of fruits and vegetables [OR, 0.391; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.190-0.807], potassium [OR, 0.425; 95% CI, 0.192-0.939] and folate [OR, 0.490; 95% CI, 0.249-0.964] were significantly lower than those in the lowest quartiles. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that, in young Vietnamese women, an increased consumption of fruit and vegetables might be beneficial for serum hsCRP, a risk factor for future CVD events.

      • Field evaluation of transgenic poplars expressing the constitutively active small G protein for improved biomass traits

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An <I>Arabidopsis</I> small G protein, RabG3b, has been previously characterized as a positive regulator of xylem development in <I>Arabidopsis</I>. Transgenic poplars overexpressing a constitutively active form of RabG3b (RabG3bCA) were developed, and their performance as potential biomass crops was evaluated in the field in Suwon, Korea (37°26′N, 126°98′E) from May to October 2016. RabG3bCA transgenic poplars showed increased stem growth and produced 3–4 times greater dry biomass than hybrid control poplars. Fiber length and diameter were also increased by 15–26% and 28–38%, respectively. Transgenic poplars were analyzed for enzymatic digestibility and biofuel production after chemical pretreatments. Glucose and ethanol yields were higher in pretreated transgenic poplars than hybrid control, and the pretreatment effectiveness of sodium hydroxide was better than that of the other chemicals. We propose that RabG3bCA can add value to the development of biomass crops.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Biomass traits of RabG3bCA transgenic poplars in the greenhouse recurred in the field. </LI> <LI> RabG3bCA overexpression improved xylem development, and as a result, wood traits. </LI> <LI> Glucose and ethanol yields were increased in RabG3bCA transgenic poplars. </LI> <LI> RabG3bCA transgenic poplars have value as a biomass resource in the wood industry. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • TLR2 Signaling in Tubular Epithelial Cells Regulates NK Cell Recruitment in Kidney Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury

        <P>Damage-associated molecular patterns released from damaged kidney cells initiate postischemic inflammation, an essential step in the progression of kidney ischemia–reperfusion injury (IRI). However, the mechanism that coordinates this highly specific process in ischemic kidneys remains to be clarified. Previously, we demonstrated that CD137 from NK cells specifically stimulates CD137 ligand (CD137L) on tubular epithelial cells (TECs) such that TECs produced the high CXCR2 chemokine levels required for neutrophil chemotaxis. We report in the present study that endogenous TLR2 ligands released from ischemic TECs induce CCR5 chemokine expression, which is critical to promoting NK cell recruitment. By implanting CD137L<SUP>−/−</SUP> TECs into the kidney capsule of TLR2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice, we further showed that TLR2-mediated NK cell recruitment is an uncoupled event that can occur independently of CD137L signaling in TECs, which is responsible for recruiting neutrophils. Therefore, our findings identify TECs as both a target for kidney damage and also as a master regulator that actively modulates stepwise signaling, leading to the initiation and amplification of acute sterile inflammation that inflicts kidney IRI. Being clinically important, the signaling pathway of innate receptors in epithelial cells may therefore be a good target to block acute sterile inflammation resulting from tissue damage, including kidney IRI.</P>

        Triple-Network Dysconnectivity in Patients With First-Episode Psychosis and Individuals at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis

        Objective In the triple-network model, the salience network (SN) plays a crucial role in switching between the default-mode network (DMN) and the central executive network (CEN). Aberrant patterns of triple-network connectivity have been reported in schizophrenia patients, while findings have been less consistent for patients in the early stages of psychotic disorders. Thus, the present study examined the connectivity among the SN, DMN, and CEN in first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients and individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis. Methods Thirty-nine patients with FEP, 78 patients with CHR for psychosis, and 110 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. We compared the SN, DMN, and CEN connectivity patterns of the three groups. The role of the SN in networks with significant connectivity differences was examined by mediation analysis. Results FEP patients showed lower SN-DMN and SN-CEN (cluster-level F=5.83, false discovery rate [FDR] corrected-p=0.001) connectivity than HCs. There was lower SN-DMN connectivity (cluster-level F=3.06, FDR corrected-p=0.053) at a trend level in CHR subjects compared to HCs. Between HCs and FEP patients, mediation analysis showed that SN-DMN connectivity was a mediator between group and SN-CEN connectivity. Additionally, SN-CEN connectivity functioned as a mediator between group and SN-DMN connectivity. Conclusion Aberrant connectivity between the SN and DMN/CEN suggests disrupted network switching in FEP patients, although CHR subjects showed trend-level SN-DMN dysconnectivity. Our findings suggest that dysfunctional triple-network dynamics centered on the SN can appear in patients in the early stages of psychotic disorders.

      • Characterization of push-pull type of conjugated polymers containing 8<i>H</i>-thieno[2,3-<i>b</i>]indole for organic photovoltaics

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Polymers using thieno[2,3-<I>b</I>]indole (2-TI) with high planarity were synthesized and utilized for the photovoltaics. Conjugated polymers (<B>PTIDTBT, PTIFDTBT</B> and <B>PTIDFDTBT</B>) containing 2-TI as electron-donating unit and fluorinated DTBT as electron-accepting unit were synthesized.</P> <P>To enhance the effect of lowering highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level for the high open-circuit voltages (<I>V</I> <SUB>OC</SUB>), we utilized new thieno[2,3-<I>b</I>]indole (2-TI) moiety as the weak electron-donating group and the fluoro-substituted electron-accepting BT unit.</P> <P>The polymer composed of BT with two fluorine unit coupled with 2-TI, <B>PTIDFDTBT</B>, shows higher <I>V</I> <SUB>OC</SUB> out of the series. The device comprising <B>PTIDFDTBT</B> and PC<SUB>71</SUB>BM (1:3) showed a <I>V</I> <SUB>OC</SUB> of 0.79 V, a <I>J</I> <SUB>SC</SUB> of 8.39 mA/cm<SUP>2</SUP>, and a fill factor (<I>FF</I>) of 0.48, giving a power conversion efficiency of 3.21%.</P>

        A Case Study on Physical Characteristics of High School Male Elite Athletes according to Sport Type: Focusing on the Target Elite Athletes of Seoul Sports Science Research Institute

        Since 2015, Korea has been operating regional sports science centers in 10 cities across the country, and is pursuing a plan to systematically link athletes’ physical fitness through physical fitness measurements according to the athlete’s life cycle. For 243 elite athletes whose physical strength was measured by the Seoul Sports Science Center, the development direction of each sport type of the elite athletes in Seoul is analyzed through classification and grade. As a result of the study, in terms of basic physical strength, the difference in physical strength by sport type was significant in all items of muscle strength, muscular endurance, muscle power, cardiopulmonary endurance, agility, balance, and coordination except flexibility. As a result of analyzing the difference in the level of the physical strength factor according to the application of the fitness grade criteria for each sport type, the A type showed significantly higher differences in grip strength and back strength than the B and D types. It was significantly higher in sit-up than type A. Type B showed significantly higher physical endurance, muscle power, cardiopulmonary endurance, agility, coordination, and equilibrium compared to the A and D types, and D type showed higher physical strength level than the A type in cardiopulmonary endurance, agility, and balance. Based on the results of this study, it is considered necessary to compare the performance and physical strength of male high school students in Seoul and the characteristics of athletes by sport type to review the training method and improvement of the performance.

        Acupuncture Treatment for Restless Legs Syndrome: A Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

        To determine the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating restless legs syndrome (RLS), we conducted a literature review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that utilized acupuncture as an intervention for patients diagnosed with RLS. Relevant clinical studies (n = 158) from seven databases (the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CNKI, KISS, RISS, and OASIS) were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzed. Moreover, 6 RCTs were selected for review. In all six studies, it was indicated people who underwent acupuncture treatment showed significant improvements in their overall health. An increase in the treatment efficacy rate, sleep quality, and quality of life indicators after the acupuncture treatment was confirmed. The severity of pain as assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) scores and International RLS Study Group Rating Scale (IRLSRS) scores and the severity of RLS symptoms were significantly reduced. Any significant side effects were not reported. Acupuncture is suggested as an effective and safe treatment method for RLS. However, further large-scale RCT studies are needed to confirm our findings.

        울산지역 초등학생의 알레르기비염 유병과 면역반응과의 상관성: 환자-대조군 연구

        Objectives: This study aims to investigate the correlations between the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and cytokines among elementary school children in an industrial city, Ulsan, South Korea, and to identify major environmental risk factors associated with AR prevalence. Methods: We conducted a case-control study in June 2009 and February 2010 in order to evaluate the relationship between AR and related cytokines. Data on physician-treated prevalence over the past 12 months and potential risk factors for AR were compiled through a questionnaire from a survey of 339 schoolchildren living in different urban environments. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with propensity score matched data (n=180) to assess the influences of cytokines (IL-13, IL-33, IL-4 and IL-5) on AR prevalence and to determine which environmental factors affected AR. Results: In univariate analysis, the AR prevalence was influenced by family history of AR (mother and siblings), environmental factors (odor condition and irritated symptoms of air pollution), and indoor allergens (D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus). The t-test demonstrated that eosinophils, Immunoglobulin E (IgE), and interleukins (IL-13 and IL-5) were statistically significantly different according to treatment of allergic rhinitis over the preceeding 12 months. The results of the multiple logistic regression analysis showed that a statistically significant association between several factors (such as irritated symptoms of air pollution (OR 4.075, CI 1.735-9.568), IL-13 (OR 0.825, CI 0.734-0.928), odor condition (OR 2.409, CI 0.908-6.389), and AR history of siblings (OR 2.217, CI 0.999-4.921)) and the prevalence of AR was found after adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: These results suggest that AR prevalence is significantly associated with cytokine level, genetic background, and outdoor environmental factors. Although living in a polluted area and genetic background can contribute to an increased risk of childhood AR, cytokine level should be considered as an important factor in the treatment of AR in the last 12 months.
