Fibroblasts synthesize and secrete dermal collagen, matrix proteins, growth factors, and cytokines. These characteristics of fibroblasts provide a potential way for fibroblast therapy to treat skin ulcers more effectively than conventional therapies such as cytokine therapy and negative pressure wound therapy. However, the obstacle to the commercialization of fibroblast therapy is the limited supply of cells with consistent quality. In this study, we tested whether human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hESC-MSCs) could be differentiated into fibroblasts considering that they have characteristics of high differentiation rates, unlimited proliferation possibility from a single colony, and homogeneity. As a result, hESC-MSC-derived fibroblasts (hESC-MSC-Fbs) showed a significant increase in the expression of type I and III collagen, fibronectin, and fibroblast-specific protein-1 (FSP-1). Besides, vessel formation and wound healing were enhanced in hESC-MSC-Fb-treated skin tissues compared to PBS- or hESC-MSC-treated skin tissues, along with decreased IL-6 expression at 4 days after the formation of pressure ulcer wound in a mouse model. In view of the limited available cell sources for fibroblast therapy, hESC-MSC-Fbs show a promising potential as a commercial cell therapy source to treat skin ulcers.

Estrogens are commonly used in gynecologic area, such as oral contraception, hormone replacement therapy, and in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer. Although estrogen is a common cause of acute drug-induced pancreatitis, there has been paucity of report in Korea. Clinical course of estrogen-induced acute pancreatitis is usually mild to moderate, but fetal case can occur. In addition, there can be a latency from the first administration to the symptom. Therefore, physicians should consider the possibility of the disease when a woman taking estrogen or previous history of taking estrogen presents with acute abdominal pain. Here, we report a case of estrogen-induced acute pancreatitis that occurred during the preparation for embryo transfer.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Houttuynia cordata supercritical extract (HSE) were investigated in rat carrageenan-air pouch model. Oral administration of HSE (50-200 ㎎/㎏) suppressed carrageenaninduced exudation and albumin leakage, as well as inflammatory cell infiltration at a high dose (200 ㎎/㎏). Intraperitoneal injection of dexamethasone (2 ㎎/㎏) only decreased exudation and cell infiltration, while indomethacin (2 ㎎/㎏, i.p.) reduced exudate volume and albumin content without influence on the cell number. HSE lowered tumor-necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nitric oxide (NO), as well as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Dexamethasone only reduced TNF-α and NO, while indomethacin decreased PGE2. The results indicate that HSE exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting both TNF-α-NO and cyclooxygenase-2-PGE2 pathways.
GG-01 : Successful laparoscopic management of adnexal mass in the third trimester of pregnancy

Ovarian cyst torsion is one of the important causes of surgical abdomen during pregnancy. Although, laparoscopic management has been steadily accepted and applied as data supporting its safety in the gravid patient, laparoscopy in the third trimester remains controversial. A 29-year-old woman in the 32nd week of gestation was admitted with acute abdominal pain and diagnosed as right ovarian tumor with torsion. Laparoscopic right ovarian cystectomy was successfully completed and had no intra- and postoperative complication for mother and fetus. The final diagnosis was serous cystadenoma, borderline malignancy of right ovary. Elective cesarean delivery with surgical staging was performed in the 39th week of gestation. Laparoscopy should be considered as an effective management option during any trimester of pregnancy. Here, we report a case successfully managed by laparoscopy in the third trimester with literature review.

Dear Editor, High-molecular-weight kininogen (HK) circulates bound to prekallikrein (PK), which can bind to negatively charged phospholipids. It is a non-enzymatic cofactor for kallikrein binding to negatively charged phospholipids. Kallikrein activates factor XII, which then activates factor XI, leading to activation of the intrinsic coagulation pathway [1].

A series of molecular weight controlled polyimide oligomer (Oligo-PI) resins were developed via thepolymerization of 4,4’-(1,3-phenylenedioxy)dianiline (TPE-R), 2,3’,3,4’-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and4-phenylethynyl phthalic anhydride (PEPA). PEPA was served as the molecular weight controlling and reactive end-cappingagent. Oligo-PI resins have an asymmetric and amorphous structure, which could make better processability to fabricatecomposites. To investigate the effect of molecular weight (MW) and chain extension structures of phenylethynyl groups bythermal curing on thermal and mechanical properties, carbon fabric reinforced Oligo-PIs (Oligo-PI/CFs) were prepared viahot press technique. Morphology, mechanical and thermal properties of Oligo-PI/CFs were measured by SEM, TGA, IZODimpact tester, and UTM (three-point bending test). As MW got higher and the ordered network structures were formed, thecomposite exhibited excellent thermal stability. Flexural strengths also increased by building the crosslinked structures. Onthe other hand, impact strengths were less influenced. Among Oligo-PI/CFs, Oligo-PI/CF-3 showed comparatively goodperformance. The mechanical properties of Oligo-PI/CF-3 (5 ply) was evaluated at both 25 °C and 200 °C. The compositemaintained high strengths even at high temperatures, demonstrating the durability of Oligo-PI/CFs in harsh conditionsutilized for the aerospace and military applications.

A series of dendritic multiporphyrin arrays (P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB); n = 2, 4, 8) comprising a triazole-bearing focal zinc porphyrin (P-Zn) with a different number of freebase porphyrin (P-FB) wings has been synthesized, and their photoinduced energy transfer process has been evaluated. UV/vis absorption, emission, and time-resolved fluorescence measurements indicated that efficient excitation energy transfer takes place from the focal P-Zn to P-FB wings in P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB)'s. The triazole-bearing P-Zn effectively formed host-guest complexes with anionic species by means of axial coordination with the aid of multiple C-H hydrogen bonds. By addition of various anionic guests to P(Zn)Tz and P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB)'s, strong bathochromic shifts of P-Zn absorption were observed, indicating the HOMO-LUMO gap (Delta EHOMO-LUMO) of P-Zn decreased by anion binding. Time-resolved fluorescence predominantly takes place from P-Zn in P(Zn)Tz-nP(FB)'s after the addition of CN-. This change was reversible because a treatment with a silver strip to remove CN- fully recovered the original energy transfer process from the focal P-Zn to P-FB wings. measurements revealed that the fluorescence emission

Synergistic anti-inflammatory effects of Laminaria japonica fucoidan and Cistanche tubulosa extract
Jangbeen Kyung,Dajeong Kim,Dongsun Park,Yun-Hui Yang,Ehn-Kyoung Choi,Sung-Pyo Lee,Tae-Su Kim,Yoon-Bok Lee,Yun-Bae Kim 한국실험동물학회 2012 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.28 No.2
The anti-inflammatory effects of fuciodan and Cistanche tubulosa (CT) extract were investigated in vitro macrophage culture system and in vivo carrageenan-induced air pouch inflammation model. CT extract inhibited nitric oxide production from activated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells, while fucoidan was inactive. In vivo air pouch inflammation model, carrageenan-induced vascular exudation and increased nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 concentrations in the exudates were synergistically suppressed by co-administration of fucoidan or CT extract. Moreover, tissue inflammation was substantially attenuated by the combinational therapy. However, there was no synergistic effect against the inflammatory cell infiltration, although fucoidan and CT extract each markedly reduced the cell numbers. Therefore, it is suggested that fucoidan blocks infiltration of inflammatory cells, while CT extract inhibits activation of the cells, and that their combinational treatment could be a promising candidate for the relief of various types of inflammation.
