        문학과 영화 강의 사례 영미소설과 영화 강의의 사례 연구 - 1999 년 전남대학교 영문학과의 경우 -

        This case study, based on my experience of teaching of the undergraduate level at Chonnam National University, starts with the assumption that the novel and film can be discussed on the common ground offered by interdisciplinary and cultural studies because the interaction of literature and film has special relevance to our culture and times. The primary aim of this course is to serve students who wish to continue reading novels and films together and follow their own interests in further exploring certain topics. As shown in the course description which delineate my attempts, this case study aims to be historical, methodological and pedagogical, representing a variety of cultural practices and critical methods. For greatest flexibility in different genes, cultures and stances, the course cover 13 to 16 texts, including the post colonial English- speaking world, and tries to contextualize and highlight those topics which dramatize the most pressing motifs of these times and areas. For a basic vocabulary for beginning to think about and write about novels and films, a brief presentation of key critical concepts provide students with the tools to distinguish their particular practices: narrative structures, genes, and formal devices such as camera techniques, film, languages, other critical terms and analytic categories. In this study, three texts are dealt with, which will allow student to think about English novels and the others : <A Passage to India>, <Once Were Warriors> and <An Angel at My Table>. Group discussions for topics and cinematography are crucial in evoking creative responses from students. Thus, in a cultural period in which boundaries of literature and film are continually being redrawn, the topic of literature and film should serve to invigorate than ever before inside the classroom.

        Association between Elevated Pleural Interleukin-33 Levels and Tuberculous Pleurisy

        Background: Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) plays a crucial role in Mycobacterium tuberculosis induced pleural responses. Interleukin (IL)-33 up-regulates the production of IFN-γ. We aimed to identify whether an association between pleural IL-33 levels and tuberculous pleurisy exists and determine its diagnostic value. Methods: Pleural IL-33, ST2 (a receptor of IL-33), adenosine deaminase (ADA), and IFN-γ, as well as serum IL-33 and ST2 were measured in 220 patients with pleural effusions (PEs). Patients with malignant (MPEs), parapneumonic (PPEs), tuberculous (TPEs), and cardiogenic (CPEs) pleural effusions were included. Results: Pleural and serum IL-33 levels were highest or tended to be higher in patients with TPEs than in those with other types of PEs. The median pleural fluid-to-serum IL-33ratio was higher in TPE cases (≥ 0.91) than in other PE cases (≤ 0.56). Pleural IL-33 levels correlated with those of pleural ADA and IFN-γ. However, the diagnostic accuracies of pleural IL-33 (0.74) and pleural fluid-to-serum IL-33 ratio (0.75) were lower than that of ADA (0.95) or IFN-γ (0.97). Pleural ST2 levels in patients with MPEs were higher than in patients with TPEs. Serum ST2 levels did not differ among the groups. Conclusions: We identified an association between elevated pleural IL-33 levels and tuberculous pleurisy. However, we recommend conventional pleural markers (ADA or IFN-γ) as diagnostic markers of TPE.

        The purpose of this study is to facilitate understanding related to the near death experience for nurses. The research method used in this study was a qualitative research method, phenomenological approach. The participants were three persons; two males and one female. One was confirmed dead by a medical doctor came to life 30 minutes later. Another was unconscious for 9 days, which means social death. The last one experienced near death from drowning. The data was collected using in-depth interviews four times respectively form March 5, 1998 to June 10, 2001 and analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological approach in qualitative methods. The results of this study shows that the meaning of near death experience involved 'flashed scenes from his/her whole life', 'suffering', 'deviation', 'ambivalence about death', 'resuscitation' and 'maturity'. Further research is needed to provide nurses with wholistic care for persons experiencing near death. As 2% of the dead come to life again, it is quite reasonable that the dead are left at a room temperature (without being frozen) for 2 or 4 days and carefully watched 24 hours by the mourning family members before the final burial in the Korean traditional funeral ceremony held at home. I f one can have a new life from near death experience, this experience serves as an excellent chance for the person concerned to make a new decision for a more meaningful life and enforce positive attitudes.

        1970년대의 고암대종사

        이 글은 1970년대 古庵大宗師(1899~1988)의 행적을 살핀 것이다. 고암은 曹溪宗 宗正을 역임한 한국 현대불교의 대표적 고승이다. 1988년 입적하였지만 수행자로서, 청정율사로서의 행적은 수많은 문도와 신자들 사이에 현재까지 회자되고 있다. 또한 3차례나 종정에 추대된 인물로서 현대 조계종의 역사를 이해하는데 빠질 수 없는 인물이라 할 수 있다. 1970년대는 고암의 행적에서 중요한 시기였다. 고암은 1970년대 신흥사 조실로서 신흥사를 중창하는데 큰 역할을 하였으며, 3차례 조계종의 종정을 역임했다. 교단사에서 1970년대는, 1954년부터 시작되어 10여년을 끌던 종단정화의 광풍이 지나간 후 정화의 정착과 敎政의 안정이 기대되던 시기이다. 그러나 중앙 종단의 권력과 각 사찰의 이권을 둘러싼 분규와 소송이 끊이지 않아 교단의 혼란과 위신 추락이 날로 더해가던 시기이기도 하다. 1970년대의 조계종의 종정은 지금과 같이 상징적 위상을 갖는 종정과는 다른 성격을 띠고 있었다. 종정은 종단정치의 중요한 구성요소로서 종단운영에 막강한 힘을 발휘했다. 고암은 종정으로서 종단정치에 관여하였고 때론 분규의 주역으로서 세간에 알려졌다. 고암은 1970년대 종정으로서 분규와 기강해이로 대혼란을 겪던 당시 승단을 이끌어야 했다. 수행이 바탕이 된 승단정화를 꾀한 고암은 종정유시를 통해 종회를 유보시키거나 총무원장 중심제로의 종헌개헌에 반발하는 등 종정의 권한에 대한 논란을 일으키기도 하였다. 청정율사로서, 전국과 세계를 누빈 포교사로서 평생을 살았던 고암의 일생에서 1970년대는, 종단의 정신적 수장이라는 영광과 혼란뿐인 종단정치의 상처가 교차하던 시기였다. 그러나 1970년대 고암은 승단분규의 중심에서 정화과정에서 파생된 승단 내 문제를 인식하고, 정화의 완성과 당대 한국불교 승단의 나아갈 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 이러한 1970년대 고암의 행적연구가 현대 고승으로서 고암의 전반적 생애와 사상에 대한 연구와, 승단분규의 시대로만 규정된 1970년대 불교계에 대한 관심과 연구를 촉진할 수 있길 기대한다. This study investigates Goam's activities in the 1970's. Goam was one of the great Seon masters of contemporary Korean Buddhist history. He was famous for a respectable Seon ascetic and stern vinaya master. He also was had as the 3rd, 4th, and 6th Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye order from the end of 1960's to the end of 1970's. In the 1970's, Goam helped Sinhungsa be restored as the head temple in Gangwon province and participated in official affairs of Jogye order. He had reserved the activity of the Central Assembly of Jogye order and vetoed revision of the constitution of the Jogye order, which aimed to restrict the competence of the Supreme Patriarch. This caused lots of controversies about the limit of authority of the Supreme Patriarch. However, he realized the aftermath of Buddhist purification movement from the 1950's and tried to overcome all difficulties in order to reform Sangha society. I wish this study would contribute to promote the research about the lifetime of Goam as the representative master as well as the 1970's Jogye order in contemporary Korean Buddhist history.
