The present study focuses on the influence of target strength (TS) changes in the swimming angle of the hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus). We measured in-situ TS at 38 and 120 kHz with luring lamps at a fishing ground for jigging boats near the coastal waters of Jeju-do in Korea. Swimming angle and size of hairtails were measured using an acoustic camera. Results showed that mean preanal length was estimated to be 13.5 cm (SD = 2.7 cm) and mean swimming tilt angle was estimated to be 43.9° (SD = 17.6°). The mean TS values were −35.7 and −41.2 dB at 38 and 120 kHz, respectively. The results will assist in understanding the influence of swimming angle on the TS of hairtails and, thus, improve the accuracy of biomass estimates.

We compiled and analyzed past time-series data to evaluate changes in oceanographic conditions and marine ecosystems near the Ieodo ocean research station (IORS) in the East China Sea (N 31°15'-33°45', E 124°15'-127°45') in relation to longterm changes in climate and global warming. The environment data we used was a depth-specific time-series of temperature and salinity for the water columns at 175 fixed stations along 22 oceanographic lines in Korean waters, based on bimonthly measurements since 1961 taken by the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute. As an indicator for the ecosystem status of the waters off Ieodo, we analyzed species composition in biomass of fishes caught by Korean fishing vessels in the waters near the IORS (1984-2010) and summarized the data in relation to the environmental changes using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). To detect step changes in the time-series of environmental factors, we applied a sequential t-test analysis of regime shift. Correspondence analysis detected a major shift in fish assemblage structure between 1990 and 1993: the dominant species was filefish during 1981-1992, but chub mackerel during 1992-2007. This shift in fish assemblage structure seemed to be related to the well-established 1989 regime shift in the North Pacific, which was confirmed again with respect to temperature in the Yellow Sea and the Korea Strait (but not in the waters off the IORS). In overall from 1984 to 2010, salinity was more important than water temperature in CCA, implying that the fluctuation of the Tsushima warm current is a most important force driving the long-term hanges in fish assemblage structure in the waters off the IORS. Further ultidisciplinary researches are required to identify oceanographic and biological processes that link climate-driven physical changes to fish recruitment and habitat range fluctuations.

This study was focused on acoustic scattering characteristics of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) at frequency 38, 70, and 120 kHz by Kirchhoff-ray mode (KRM) model. The body length (BL) of 16 individuals ranged in 12.2~22.0 cm (mean±S.D.: 17.8±3.2 cm) and the swimbladder length ranged in 4.2~8.6 cm (mean±S.D.: 6.6±1.6 cm) and the swimbladder cross section ranged in 1.7~6.6 cm2 (mean±S.D.: 3.8±1.6 cm2). This result shows that results correlate well between the BL and the length and cross section of swimbladder. The swimbladder angle ranged in 7~12°and the maximum TS values ranged in 16~ 5°at tilt angle. The averaged TS-to-BL relationship were TS38kHz=20log10BL-65.33 (R2=0.66), TS70kHz=20log10BL-65.90 (R2=0.67), and TS120kHz=20log10BL-66.65 (R2=0.65). These results can be used fundamental data in order to estimate distribution and biomass of jack mackerel by using hydro-acoustic method.
한국 동해의 살오징어(Todarodes pacificus) 어장변화 및 풍도와 동물플랑크톤 분포와의 관계

The common squid Todarodes pacificus is a dominant species in Korean waters, where it is captured preponderantly by the angling fishery. The spawning and nursery grounds of T. pacificus extend from the southern East Sea to the northern East China Sea. Consequently, the environmental conditions in this area during the spawning and nursery seasons might affect the abundance of T. pacificus. This study, analyzed the relationship between the distribution of zooplankton and the abundance of T. pacificus and variation in the squid angling fishing grounds in Korean waters. There was a positive relationship between the fluctuations in zooplankton and the catch per unit effort (CPUE; kg.day-1.person-1) of the angling fishery in the East Sea of Korea. The main fishing season is from July to December and the CPUE was closely related to the zooplankton biomass in April in the East Sea. Recently, the center of the squid jigging ground has moved drastically from the area around Ulleung Island to the northern East Sea. We postulate that the fishing grounds of the squid angling fishery will move farther north with climate change.
울진 바다목장 주변해역 연성기질 조하대에 서식하는 대형저서동물의 군집구조

본 연구는 울진 바다목장 해역에서 서식하는 대형저서동물의 생물다양성, 개체수 및 군집구조를 파악하기 위하여 실시되었다. 연구해역 연성기질 조하대에서 출현한 대형저서동물은 345종 8m-2에 단위면적당(m-2) 출현 개체수는 5,797개체이었다. 분류군별 출현 종수와 개체수에 있어서는 환형동물의 다모류가 각각 154종, 44.64%와 193,320개체, 83.37%의 점유율을 나타내 가장 우점하는 생물이었다. 한편 연구해역의 주요 우점종으로 다모류의 민얼굴갯지렁이(Spiophanes bombyx)는 124,385개체(평균 3,110±4,434개체 m-2), 53.64%의 점유율을 나타내었고, 다음으로 Magelona sp.1이 16,130개체 (평균 403±926개체 m-2)로 6.96%를 차지하였다. 이 밖에 이매패류의 Cadella semitorta, 다모류의 긴자락송곳갯지렁이 (Lumbrineris longifolia) 및 이매패류의 겨자씨조개 (Alveniusojianus)의 순서로 각각 6,325개체(2.73%), 5,010개체 (2.16%) 및 4,820개체 (2.08%)가 출현하였다. 한편 출현 종과 개체수의 자료를 근거로 대형저서동물의 군집구조 분석을 실시한 결과, 크게 2개의 그룹과 1개의 정점 (5월의 정점 4)으로 구분되었다. 이 가운데 그룹 1은모든 조사시기의 정점 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 및 9가 포함되었고, 환경적으로 30~60 m 내외의 수심과 세립질 퇴적물이 우세한 정점들이라는 공통점이 있었다. 또한 본 그룹에 속하는 대형저서동물은 총 282종(평균 66±15종)과 7,471개체 m-2의 밀도에 다모류의 Magelona sp.1, 긴자락송곳갯지렁이, 삼각모자갯지렁이(Scoloplos armiger), 꼬리대나무갯지렁이 (Praxillella affinis), 민숭대나무갯지렁이 (Maldanecristata)와 겨자씨조개 등이 주요한 구성종이었다. 반면 그룹 2는 모든 조사시기의 정점 1, 4, 7 및 10으로 구성되었고, 환경적으로 수심과 퇴적상은 각각 5m 내외의 조립질 퇴적물이 우세한 정점들이었다. 또한 생물적으로는 181종 (평균 37±18종)과 3,287개체 m-2를 나타내었고, 주요 우점종은 이매패류의 Cadella semitorta와 다모류의 Lumbrineriopsis sp.이었다. 이상을 종합해 보면, 연구해역에 서식하는 대형저서동물 군집은 연안으로 부터의 이격정도와 그에 따른 수심과 퇴적물의 조성차이에 의해 그 구조를 달리하고 있었다. In this study, we investigated the macrobenthic community structure and spatiotemporal variations in Uljin Marine Ranching area, East Sea of Korea. Macrobenthos were collected using a modified van Veen grab sampler from April to September 2013. Total number of species sampled was 345 and mean density was 5,797 ind. m-2, both of which were dominated by the polychaetes. The most dominant species were Spiophanes bombyx (53.64%), followed by Magelona sp.1 (6.96%), Cadella semitorta (2.73%), Lumbrineris longifolia (2.16%) and Alvenius ojianus (2.08%). Cluster analysis and nMDS ordination analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity identified 2 station groups. The group 1 (station 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9) was characterized by high abundance of the polychaetes Magelona sp.1, Lumbrineris longifolia, Scoloplos armiger, Praxillella affinis, Maldane cristata and the bivalve Alvenius ojianus, with fine sediment above 30m water depth. On the other hand, the group 2 (station 1, 4, 7 and 10) was numerically dominated by the polychaete Lumbrineriopsis sp. and the bivalve Cadella semitorta, with coarse sediment below 5m water depth. Collectively, the macrobenthic community structure showed a distinct spatial trend, which seemed to be related to the water depth and sediment composition.

Using artificial neural network (ANN) technique, auction prices for common mackerel were forecasted with the daily total sale and auction price data at the Busan Cooperative Fish Market before introducing Total Allowable Catch (TAC) system, when catch data had no limit in Korea. Virtual input data produced from actual data were used to improve the accuracy of prediction and the suitable neural network was induced for the prediction. We tested 35 networks to be retained 10, and found good performance network with regression ratio of 0.904 and determination coefficient of 0.695. There were significant variations between training and verification errors in this network. Ideally, it should require more training cases to avoid overlearning, which leads to improve performance and makes the results more reliable. And the precision of prediction was improved when environmental factors including physical and biological variables were added. This network for prediction of price and catch was considered to be applicable for other fishes.

At the first time in South Korea, the state of the art acoustic systems were mounted on the R/V Tamgu 21. The acoustic systems are an EK80 broadband echosounder (18, 38, 70, 120, 200 and 333 kHz) which has two beam modes such as continuous wave (narrowband) and frequency modulation (broadband), an ME70 multibeam echosounder (70-120 kHz), and a SH90 sonar (111.5-115.5 kHz). Acoustic data from broadband mode have a very short range resolution, a large detection range, a high signal to noise ratio, and a wide and consecutive frequency response. In ME70, each individual beam consisted in a multibeam plays a role as a spilt beam. The first trial of the cutting edge acoustic system installed on the R/V Tamgu 21 was conducted from 15 Feb to 29 Feb 2016 in East Sea, South Sea and East China Sea. The properties of the acoustic systems were elucidated and exploratory results from three systems were exhibited. Lastly, issues which should be considered and future research plan are mentioned.
