Recently, study on the improvement of combustion performance for the diesel engine by using the impinging spray in the combustion chamber has been actively studied. The purpose of this study is to examine the variation of exhaust emission between the trial engine with impinging plate and the prototype engine in accordance with change of fuel injection timing and fuel injection pressure. The concentration of nitrogen oxide of trial engine decreased more than 50% compared to prototype engine. However, smoke of trial engine indicated very high concentration compared to prototype engine. The effect of fuel injection timing on the nitrogen oxide and smoke showed different results, that is, the concentration of nitrogen oxide decreased as the degree of fuel injection start become slower, whereas the concentration of smoke decreased as the degree of fuel injection start become faster.

Cellobiose has garnered attention as analternative carbon source for numerous biotechnologicalprocesses because it is produced when lignocellulosicbiomass is treated with endo and exo-glucanases. Anengineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CEL), expressingcellobiose transporter and intracellular beta-glucosidaseutilized cellobiose efficiently. As compared to the cultureusing glucose, the CEL strain grown on cellobiose produceda similar yield of ethanol with slightly reduced growth rate. In this study, concentrations of central metabolites weremonitored at mid-log phase with GC/MS to comparecellobiose- and glucose-grown CEL strain. When the CELstrain was grown on cellobiose, intracellular trehaloseconcentration increased 6-fold as compared with the glucosegrowncells. Interestingly, the higher level of trehalose incells grown on cellobiose resulted in physiological changeswhich might be beneficial for biotechnological processes. We observed higher resistance against oxidative stresswhen cellobiose was used. Oxidative stress is commonlyoccurred by the byproducts of pretreatment process oflignocellulosic biomass, such as 2-furaldehyde (furfural) and5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Our study demonstratedthat intracellular metabolite profiling of yeast strains can beemployed for linking intracellular concentrations of metabolitewith physiological changes of cells upon genetic andenvironmental perturbations.

This paper describes a detailed experimental investigation of heat transfer in a reciprocating rectangular channel fitted with rib structures with particular reference to the design of a piston for marine propulsive diesel engine. The parametric test matrix involves Reynolds number, reciprocating frequency, and reciprocating radius, respectively in the ranges, 1,000~6,000, 1.7~2.5 Hz, and 7~15 cm with four different rib arrangements. The rib arrangements have considerable influences on the heat transfer in the reciprocating channel due to the modified vortex flow structure. The experimental data confirm that the increases in the heat transfer can be seen in order of Case (b), Case (c), Case (d), and Case (a).
