        Effective signal detection in a LoRa-networked ship for data-driven ship management

        Recently, as the data-based management of ships using in-ship data has been required, the demand for networking technol-ogy to acquire and stably transmit the data is increasing. However, maintaining stable connections in a ship for IoT-based data-driven management is technically challenging owing to the various communication environments and application scenarios in ships. IoT wireless sensor networks on a ship must adopt techniques to reduce the energy consumption of distributed devices and to extend communication coverage to accurately collect various data. Among commercially available IoT networking services such as long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN), Sigfox, narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), and long-term evolution (LTE) machine-to-machine (M2M) (LTE-M), LoRaWAN is one of the most promising technologies because it is a data link layer with a long range, low power consumption, and suitable bit rate for IoT applications. However, for life- and safety-related applications, the detection perfor-mance of related information may be a more important criterion that must be guaranteed. Therefore, this study discusses effective signal detection in a LoRa-networked ship for data-driven ship management.

        A Cross-layer Link Adaptive HD Video Transmission Scheme in WiMedia D-MAC based UWB Systems

        In this paper, we propose a QoS (Quality of Service)-aware and cooperative resource reservation scheme using cross-layer link adaptation for wireless high definition video transmission through UWB (Ultra Wide Band) network with D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control). A wireless high definition video transmission system usually requires stable high throughput even without line-of-sight, e.g., a destination device in another room separated by a wall. Since the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme causes lots of DRP resource reservation conflicts due to failure of beacon detection in wireless channel environment, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. And the current WiMedia MAC standard has not considered QoS provisioning even though QoS parameters such as a range of service rates are provided to each traffic stream. Therefore, we propose Relay DRP protocol with QoS-based relay node selection criterion, which makes a relay path to avoid DRP resource reservation conflicts and guarantee QoS more stably through cross-layer link adaptation of cooperative relay transmission scheme and is compliant with the current WiMedia D-MAC protocol. Simulation results demonstrate performance improvements of the proposed method for throughput and QoS provisioning.

        Reservation Conflict-Free MAC Design for Mobile Wireless USB Devices with Distributed MAC

        In this paper, a collision-free resource reservation scheme for WUSB (Wireless Universal Serial Bus) networks with WiMedia D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control). Since distributed characteristic of the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme may cause lots of conflicts, overall performances of the WUSB with WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. In addition, when we consider multi-hop environment, "mobile" hidden node problem due to mobility of WUSB devices can be happened, and it is a critical problem to mobile WUSB devices transceiving real-time QoS (Quality of Service) traffic. To tackle the problem, we propose a new DRP reservation mechanism to prevent DRP conflicts for multi-hop mobility support in WUSB networks with WiMedia D-MAC and show its improved performance via simulation results.

        Networking strategy for data-driven management in a ship: Requirements and applications

        Data-driven management in ships to improve efficiency and safety increasingly requires a networking solution that should satisfy the requirements of a ship. The mandatory regulations in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements require recording voyage data to assist in accident investigations. However, most intra-communication devices in a ship are built based on wired communication, such as Ethernet, which causes problems with initial installation cost and scalability. Internet of Things (IoT) technology interconnects many sensor nodes to collect data and allows them to be used intelligently. Considering wireless sensor networks for IoT in a ship, techniques to reduce the energy consumption of distributed devices and extend communication coverage are significant issues to collect various data in a ship and ensure the accuracy of the collected data. The long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN) protocol for IoT was introduced as a promising solution for IoT because it is a data link layer with a long range, low power, and suitable bit rate for IoT applications. This paper discusses the suitability of the LoRaWAN protocol as a potential network-ing strategy for ships and proposes its use cases for data-driven vessel management.

        재난 상황 시 센서 네트워크 기반 구조자 진입 경로 탐색 방안

        재난 상황 시 대피 경로를 유도하기 위해 대부분의 건물 등의 구조물에서는 중앙통제센터나 안전요원의 안내 및 대피 경로 유도등을 통해 대피 경로를 안내하고 있다. 하지만 규모가 커지고 갈수록 내부 구조가 복잡해짐에 따라 비상 상황 시 안전을 보장할 수 있는 지능적 안내 시스템의 필요성이 증가하고 있다. 따라서 경로 탐색 알고리즘에 기반한 지능적 대피경로 탐색 및 안내 시스템이 제안되었고, 구조물 내 설치된 센서 노드로부터 수집된 상황 정보를 기반으로 중앙 서버에서 각 위치별 최적의 경로를 제시하는 방식으로 대피 유도가 이루어졌다. 그러나 대피자의 효과적인 대피와 함께 중요한 부분이 구조자의 효율적인 구조활동이다. 현재까지 대피자의 대피 경로 유도에 대한 연구는 다양하게 이루어져왔으나, 구조자의 효율적 진입 경로 탐색에 대한 연구는 전무하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 센서 네트워크 환경에서 유전 알고리즘을 적용한 구조자 진입 경로 탐색 방안에 대해 제안하였다. 제안된 방식의 실효성을 검증하기 위해 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 통해 제안된 방식의 성능을 검증하였고, 그 결과 작업량 기준의 적응도 평가 시 적응도가 일정 시간 내에 수렴되었으며, 각 출구별 이동하는 노드의 비율로 환산한 출구집중도 역시 최대값과 최소값 차이가 현저하게 감소하였다. Using current evacuation methods, a crew describes the physical location of an accident and guides evacuation using alarms and emergency guide lights. However, in case of an accident on a large and complex building, an intelligent and effective emergency evacuation system is required to ensure the safety of evacuees. Therefore, several studies have been performed on intelligent path finding and emergency evacuation algorithms which are centralized guidance methods using gathered data from distributed sensor nodes. However, another important aspect is effective rescue guidance in an emergency situation. So far, there has been no consideration on the efficient rescue guidance scheme. Therefore, this paper proposes the genetic algorithm based emergency rescue guidance method using distributed wireless sensor networks. Performance evaluation using a computer simulation shows that the proposed scheme guarantees efficient path finding. The fitness converges to the minimum value in reasonable time. The density of each exit node is remarkably decreased as well.

        Analysis of energy consumption on deferred transmission of LoRaWAN down-link frame for IoT in a ship

        As the data-driven management of ships is required, the demand for Internet of Things (IoT) technology to acquire and stably exchange in-ship data is increasing. When considering a wireless sensor network for IoT in a ship, a technology that reduces the energy consumption of distributed IoT devices and ensures stable communication coverage is important to acquire various in-ship data and guarantee the accuracy of the collected data. The long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN) protocol is a promising solution for IoT because it has a long communication range and supports a suitable bit rate for IoT applications. Energy-efficient operations must be confirmed for the LoRaWAN protocol to be applied to in-vessel IoT networking. Although the LoRaWAN protocol generally does not consume considerable energy, the energy-efficient operation of the end device is limited because of the low-complexity communi-cation scheme adopted in the LoRaWAN protocol. Therefore, this study analyzes the energy loss of a LoRaWAN end device owing to the operation of a LoRaWAN network server and discusses an alternative that complies with the LoRaWAN standard.
