Trichodinid ciliates were found from the skin scrapings of culture starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus) obtained from a local fisheries market in Gangneung. Skin scrapings were prepared and stained by either Giemsa solution or silver nitrate impregnation, for morphological observation. PCR analysis was also conducted to make molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis. Morphological parameters obtained from our specimens were the most similar with Trichodina hokkaidoensis of barfin flounder from Japan and also olive flounder from Korea. The partial 18S rDNA sequences of our specimen (n=7) also showed 100.0% similarity with those of barfin flounder and olive flounder. Several trichodinids are known to have a broad host specificity and this is thought to be the case for T. hokkaidoensis. Starry flounder is a strong candidate for land-based aquaculture production, as a target species for prospective aquaculture diversification and therefore pathogenic potentials of this ciliate should be considered.

We described Trichodina hokkaidoensis Mizuno, Matsuda, Nishikawa and Ito, 2022 from olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus by morphological observation and molecular analysis. Morphological parameters of our specimen from 4 different sampling sites (Gangneung, Jeju, Wando, Taean) mostly coincided with those of T. hokkaidoensis. Some morphometric parameters of this trichodinid showed some inconsistency, depending on the sampling locations, but all of their partial small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences (1,182 bp) showed 100% homology with T. hokkaidoensis, originally described from artificially reared juvenile barfin flounder Verasper moseri from Japan. T. hokkaidoensis is known to cause epidermal damages to the host fish. However, there was no considerable pathological lesions in the olive flounder harboring T. hokkaidoensis in this study. The pathogenicity of T. hokkaidoensis against olive flounder needs to be investigated.

This study was performed to assess the antioxidant activity of Allium hookeri root extract (AHE) on lipid oxidation of rawsulfur-fed pork patties for 14 d of refrigerated storage. Different concentration of ethanol (0-100%) and time (1-12 h) wereapplied to determine the extraction condition. Water (0% ethanol) extraction for 1 h was selected as an optimal extraction condition of AHE for the following study showing the highest total phenolic content and total flavonoid content, as well asthe strongest antioxidant activity. The 1% AHE (SP1), 3% AHE (SP2), and 0.05% ascorbic acid (SP3) were added into sul-fur-fed pork patties against controls; SP0 (sulfur-fed pork patties with no AHE) and P0 (normal pork patties with no AHE). The pH values of P0 and SP0 significantly increased (p<0.05) than others on 14 d and redness of P0 showed the largestdecrement during storage. P0 and SP0 showed higher production of conjugated dienes on d 7 than others (p<0.05). Thiobar-bituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values were decreased in proportion to the increased level of AHE on 14 d (p<0.05) resulting in higher TBARS values on P0 and SP0 (p<0.05) and the negative correlation between AHE level and TBARSwere also demonstrated (r=-0.910, p=0.001). Therefore, the results suggest that AHE effectively retarded the lipid oxidationrate of sulfur-fed pork patties indicating the potential usage of AHE as a natural preservative.
