삼중수소를 함유하는 수소동위원소 시설의 운용이나 취급 또는 핵융합소재의 관리기술분야에서는 기체크로마토그래피 분리법이 중요한 분석 및 농축기술중의 하나로 활용되고 있다. 수소, 중수소 및 삼중수소의 수소동위원소 혼합기체시료를 상용 기체크로마토그래피를 사용하여 분리하였다. 기체시료는 특별히 제작된 진공-시료주입장치를 통해 액체질소온도의 분위기로 유지된 분리컬럼을 통과하는 비활성 캐리어 기체의 흐름에 주입하였다. 10% 함량의 염화망간으로 부분-비활성화한 산화알루미늄 고정상에서 수소동위원소들이 완전히 분리됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 이성질체피크의 억제와 분리 ·용리시간이 단축되어 실제 수소동위원소의 분리 및 농축기술에 유용하게 적용할 수 있는 비교적 우수한 분리조건을 얻었다. In fields of operating or handling a hydrogen isotope facility, and of the technology for nuclear fusion source management, gas chromatography has been used as one of the practical techniques for separation and enrichment of hydrogen isotopic gases including tritium. Chromatographic separation experiments of the hydrogen isotope mixture (hydrogen, deuterium and tritium) were carried out by use of a commercially available gas chromatograph. An aliquot of gas sample was injected by a specially designed vacuum sampler into the stream of inert carrier gas which went through the separation column under liquid nitrogen temperature. The complete separation of hydrogen isotopic molecules was observed with an alumina adsorbent partially deactivated by coating with 10% manganese chloride. In addition, fairly good separation conditions were obtained without any appearance of nuclear spin isomers with shorter retention time, which would be available for the practical applications of the hydrogen isotope separation and enrichment.

The immobilized hydrogen as a titanium hydride could be used in a stainless steel vessel for the long-term storage of hydrogen isotopes. The design analysis of a hydrogen isotope transport container with capacity of 0.5 MCi tritium was carried out to confirm the performance of the safely requirement. In order to verify that the radioactive transport container complies with the requirements for the B(U) type container stipulated in the MOST regulation of transport container, thermal analysis were made for normal condition and hypothetical accident conditions during transport. Thermal analysis with the Heating-7 code under conditions of 38℃ for 7 days and 800℃ for 30 minutes showed that the container complied with the requirement for B(U) type transport container.

Depleted uranium is produced in the process of nuclear fuel fabrication. The hydriding reaction of depleted uranium with hydrogen was carried out in order to develop the temporary storage medium of tritium gas. The depleted uranium was activated at 450℃ under vacuum conditions. The experimental results showed that the equilibrium pressure was lowered and the composition of uranium hydride was increased with lowering the reaction temperature. The similar tendencies were shown in the experiments using deuterium. The equilibrium pressure of deuterium was slightly higher than that of hydrogen. The uranium metal was converted to the powder after the hydriding reaction.

Effect of cross-linking agent and solvent on pore characteristics of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer was investigated experimentally. Influence of cross-linking agent on surface area of the polymeric support was dominant over all the others. Surface area and pore volume of the polymeric support were decreased and the second peak was shifted to large pore size in the pore size distribution with increasing the content of poor solvent in the solvent mixture. When toluene was used as a good solvent, and n-heptane as poor solvent, the optimum range of good/poor solvent ratio was 1.5∼0.7 for styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer of large surface and micropore area and pore volume.

A novel anion exchange resin which has triethylamine as functional group has been synthesized by the reaction of chloromethylated polystrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and triethylamine in ethanol, while commericial resin has trimethylamine as functional group. The fundamental properties such as bulk density, water content appearance index, exchange capacity, effective size, uniformity coefficient of synthesized anion exchange resin have been measured. The resin exhibited the better selectity for nitrate than sulfate in both batch and contineous column experiments.

Safe handling of tritium is a current concern to be solved in the course of tritium removal facility that is being planed in the Wolsong nuclear power plant. Almost all tritium decontamination systems proposed for tritium removal facilities employ catalytic oxidation to water, followed by drying, to remove tritium from gas stream. A series of experiments have been conducted to assess the catalytic recombination characteristics of hydrogen in an air stream by using precious metal/alumina catalysts. The H₂ to H₂O fractional conversion was determined at various catalyst temperatures (25∼150℃) and flow rates (5∼1.5L/min.)

Adsorption methods are widely used and are the most effective process for separation of noble metal ions from aqueous solution. In this study, a new functional resin derivative with a heterocyclic side chain was synthesized by modification of aminated macroporous polystyrene-co-divinylbenzene resin with phenylenediamine. The adsorption experiments of palladium in nitric acid solution were carried out and the adsorption behavior was examined by comparing with a conventional anion-exchange resin such as Dowex 1x8-400 and IRN-78.

Macroporous crosslinked polystyrene particles are of potential interests as the matrix for polymer-bound catalysts and ion exchangers. In this study, high crosslinked styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers(SDBC) as macroporous type were prepared by a suspension polymerization method. These copolymers were then studied as supports in the functionalization with heterocyclic amines for anion exchangers. The copolymer particles produced were in bead form and were suitable for use in ion exchanger.
