The authors report a case of renal cell carcinoma in a right malrotated (horizontal axis) kidney. The patient was treated by hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy. This is the first report of a horizontal axis malrotated kidney with renal cell carcinoma.

We assessed the long-term application effects of slurry composting bio-filtration (SCB) liquidfertilizer on red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) yield and soil response. Our study used arandomized complete block design with three replicates over five years (2007 to 2011). Weevaluated seven nitrogen treatments: control, five rates of SCB (SCB0, SCB1, SCB2, SCB3, andSCB4), and chemical fertilizer (Urea3). SCB was used as basal fertilization and three top dressingdoses of urea at the 30th, 60th, and 90th day after transplanting were applied. For plant analysis,fresh fruit yield, N uptake, fruit N use efficiency (FNUE), and quality (soluble sugar andcapsaicinoid concentrations) were measured; and soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil organicmatter, inorganic N, P, exchangeable K, Ca, Mg, and Na, Zn, Fe, and Cu were analyzed. In thisstudy, fresh fruit yield for Urea3 was similar to SCB3 and SCB4. Fruit soluble sugar andcapsaicinoid concentrations were the same for all N treatments. The lowest FNUE was shown underSCB0 and the highest FNUE was under SCB4. Five years of SCB treatment had no effect on soilchemical properties. For example, soil pH, EC, and soil organic matter content did not show anychanges for all N treatments, regardless of N fertilizer source, and soil P was not influenced byincreasing SCB rates. Also, the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu did not show any differenceamong treatments. Although the concentrations of K and Na in soil increased with SCB rate, theconcentration of K was still less than the recommended K level from the National Academy ofAgricultural Science, and the sodium adsorption ratio indicated that the increased Na may notadversely affect growing crops. Therefore, the accumulation of K and Na was not critical during ourstudy. These results suggest that SCB for basal fertilization can be used as one of the N fertilizersources, replacing chemical N fertilizer sources. The recommended SCB rate for basal fertilizationshould be 103 kg N/ha (SCB3) or 128 kg N/ha (SCB4). Consequently, use of SCB liquid fertilizercould provide an alternative source of pre-transplant N fertilizer for red pepper production.
Preoperative Factors Predictive of Continence Recovery after Radical Retropubic Prostatectomy

Purpose: We assessed the factors predictive of continence recovery after radical retropubic prostatectomy performed by use a single operative technique by a single surgeon. Materials and Methods: Preoperative factors, including age, body mass index (BMI), prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen level, and anatomical information from preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as membranous urethral length, thickness of the levator ani muscle, and urogenital diaphragm, were evaluated in 94 consecutive patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy between April 2005 and October 2010. Patients were also categorized into four different groups according to the overlying pattern of the prostatic apex and the membranous urethra. Continence status was evaluated by direct patient questioning at 12 months after the operation. Results: The overall continence rate at 12 months after the operation was 79.8%. In the age- and BMI-adjusted logistic regression analysis, the membranous urethral length and the overlying pattern of the prostatic apex were significant predictive factors of the continence rate at 12 months after the operation (p=0.006 and p=0.007, respectively). Other predictive factors were not contributory. Patients with no overlapping observed between the prostatic apex and membranous urethra had longer membranous urethral lengths (14.24±2.73 mm) and higher rates of recovery of continence compared with other groups. Conclusions: Membranous urethral length and shape of the prostatic apex as assessed by preoperative MRI are significantly associated with recovery of urinary continence after radical retropubic prostatectomy.

생명보험시장 규모가 확대됨에 따라 해약환급금 지급 규모가 증가하는 것은 불가피한 현상이나, 최근 해약환급금 증가 추세를 두고 장기화된 경기불황으로 인한 가계재정상태 악화로 해석하는 경우가 있음. · 2016년 2분기 누적 생명보험 해약환급금은 전년 동기 대비 6.3% 증가한 10.6조 원으로 연말에는 2000년 이후 최고치를 경신할 전망임. GDP 대비 생명보험 해약환급금 비율은 2016년 2분기에 1.4%로 관측되었는데, 이는 2010년 2분기 대비 23.6% 상승한 수치임. · GDP 대비 해약환급금 비율이 상승 추세에 있다는 것은 우리나라 생명보험 해약환급금 지급 증가 속도가 경제성장 속도를 지속적으로 초과하고 있음을 뜻함. 하지만, GDP 대비 생명보험 수입보험료 비율 또한 2010년 이후 꾸준히 증가하고 있음. · 2016년 2분기의 GDP 대비 생명보험 수입보험료 비율은 7.5%로 2010년 2분기 대비 23.7% 상승함. 생명보험 수입보험료와 해약환급금은 높은 상관관계를 보이며 증가하고 있고, 수입보험료 대비 해약환급금 비율은 2013년 이래 일정 수준을 유지하고 있음. · 경기불황의 여파로 해약환급금 지급 규모가 증가한 경우라면 수입보험료 규모는 감소하고 수입보험료 대비 해약환급금 비율은 증가하였을 것임. 따라서 생명보험 해약환급금 지급 규모가 증가한 것을 두고 경기불황으로 보험료 납부에 부담을 느낀 계약자의 보험해지 사례가 증가한 것으로 해석하는 것은 성급한 판단일 수 있음. 생명보험 수입보험료와 해약환급금 지급액이 동시에 증가하는 것이 서로 상충되는 현상으로 보일 수 있으나, 다음과 같은 두 가지 요소로 설명할 수 있음. · 첫째, 가계의 보험료 지출 규모가 소득 대비 적정 수준을 초과한 경우라면 수입보험료와 해약환급금이 동시에 증가할 수 있음. · 둘째, 소득양극화에 따라 보험시장이 중·고령 부유층 시장과 젊은 중산층 시장으로 양분화 되고 있는 상황에서, 경기불황이 지속될 경우 수입보험료와 해약환급금이 동시에 증가할 수 있음.
