In this study, a self-administered checklist for evaluation of the musculoskeletal disorders risk factors in construction industry was developed, and its reliability and validity were studied. 10 items of the checklist were determined based on the literature review, and total 2,793 construction workers participated in the analysis of the checklist's applicability. The results from the reliability analysis showed high Cohen's kappa coefficient (0.50~0.77), and high validity was also obtained in terms of relative risk (RR 1.73~9.14). Positive predictability was relatively low (13.0~32.5%), while negative predictability was high (80.1~96.8%). It can be concluded that the checklist would be suitable as a quick filtering tool of the ergonomic risk factors.

Recent Korea initiatives have led to substantial interest in the identification and control of risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSDs). And there has been increased interest in the undertaking of practical risk assessment and ergonomic interventions in the workplace. But there is no the guideline how evaluate for WMSDs risk factors?. The main aim of this paper is to review about evaluation methods for WMSDs risk factors and to suggest the guideline to select for assessment tools in the various workplace.

Recent studies suggest that prolonged standing at work is associated with varicose veins (VV). The objective of this study was to analyze the differences of VV risk in terms of work types in casino dealers and hotel service workers. Symptoms of VV were evaluated using a self-reported questionnaire from 2,092 participants, and muscle fatigue in the lower legs were evaluated using surface electromyography. The shift rate of median frequency in Gastrocnemius was -30.0% among the casino dealers working in prolonged static standing posture, and - 14.3% among the casino dealers sitting during working time. After adjusting age, gender, smoking, and family history of VV, the risk ratio of VV was 3.67(95% CI 2.03-6.59) in groupⅠ(prolonged standing and occasional walking at work), 6.29(95% CI 3.48-11.35) in groupⅡ(prolonged standing, occasional walking and heavy lifting at work), and 8.07(95% CI 4.51- 14.43) in groupⅢ(prolonged static standing at work). In conclusion, prolonged standing at work may be a work related risk factor of VV.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of symptoms relating to musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) and investigate the risk factors among researchers at university laboratories. Methods: 209 researchers were included in this study, drawn from 27 laboratories at three universities in Korea. Checklists for MSD symptoms and risk factor assessment were utilized. Results: The symptoms checklist showed reliable results with Cohen`s Kappa 0.33-0.56, percent agreement 81.0-96.8%, and correlation coefficient 0.41-0.63. The overall prevalence of MSD symptoms was 68.9%, while the prevalence in specific parts of body were as follows: shoulders(47.6%), lower back(46.9%), neck(46.9%), knees(25.4%), wrists(20.1%), elbows(13.6%). The symptom prevalence among women was higher than among men(OR 2.67, 95% CI 1.37-5.18). Daily exposure time was observed to be a significant risk factor for developing MSD symptoms(OR 2.14-6.07). Conclusions: This study suggested that repetitive pipetting and static work posture are the most significant risk factors for MSD symptoms among laboratory researchers.
중량물 들기 작업에 대한 노동부고시(2003-24호)의 문제점

In 2003, Korean government made the 11 scopes of overburdened work[Ministry of Labor(MOL), Notification No. 2003-24] to prevent musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs). MOL Notification was established based on `Washington Administrative Code 296-62-051, Ergonomics`. When initially investigating the contents, the labor unions and the specialists pointed out the possibility of devaluation on risk factors of MSDs. The present study aimed to compare the result of the NIOSH revised lifting equation(NLE) analysis with the MOL Notification(No.8, 9, 10) on manual lifting tasks. A study sample of 568 manual lifting tasks (automobile parts, foods, and tire manufacture) were evaluated for this study. All 502 tasks exceed lifting index(LI) of 1.0, but 276 tasks(55.0%) out of 502 tasks were evaluated non-over burdened work for musculoskeletal system by the MOL Notification. Particularly, 47 tasks(30.9%), in spite of exceeding LI of 3.0, were evaluated non-over burdened work. This study has shown the possibility of devaluation on risk factors of MSDs, when evaluated by MOL Notification. Therefore, it will be necessary to repeal or complement the scope of over-burdened work(MOL Notification) to prevent musculoskeletal disorders.
자동차 조립 작업에서의 노동 조건 변화와 근골격계질환과의 관련성

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) were a major source of disability and lost work time after `Foreign Currency Crisis(1998-2000)` in Korea. There is considerable evidence documenting the association between psychosocial risk factors and work disability due to WMSDs. But, there is not much in Korea. The present study aimed to explore the predictive association between the changed working conditions and WMSDs after `Foreign Currency Crisis` in Korea. A study sample of 8,670 automobile assembly workers were recruited for this study. A structured-questionnaire was used to assess general characteristics, working conditions, and information concerning medical treatment of WMSDs. After adjustment for sociodemographic factors, increased overtime work(OR=1.22), daily work time(OR=1.20), work speed (OR=1.32), number of workers(OR=0.83), supervisory control(OR=1.39), physical load(OR=1.39), and mental load (OR=1.25) were all founded to be significantly associated with WMSDs. This study has shown the importance of changed working conditions in the occurrence of WMSDs. Therefore, it will be necessary to reduce WMSDs with controlling both physical and psychosocial factors.
근골격계질환 위험요인에 대한 조선업 근로자 자가평가와 전문가 관찰 방법 비교

This study aims to compare a self-reported and expert-observed method on ergonomic risk factors of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). The checklist was developed based on the results of previous studies, and the syniptoms of WMSDs were obtained sing a self-reported questionnaire from 1,029 shipyard workers. The risk factors were assessed through the self-report by workers and video analysis by ergonomists. The symptom prevalence at the low back (59.2%), shoulders (50.8 %), and knees (49.7%) were relatively higher than those at other body parts. Odds ratios (ORs) by body parts were 2.48 to 2.90 for the risk job, and the ORs were significantly different from those of the low risk job. The risk factor scores by body parts between workers and ergonomist were very high correlation(r=0.82 to 0.92). The rates of self-report from risk job were 54.0% (elbow and arm) to 72.1 % (low back), but sometimes overestimated(l05.7 to 122.6%) than those by ergonomists. The checklist, developed in this study, will be an efficient tool for the evaluation of risk jobs using self-report by workers.

Objective: This study aimed to test the accuracy of self-reported information used in indirect estimation of pesticide exposure. Methods: To do so, self-reported values on the duration of pesticide application per day were compared with observed values. The number of days of pesticide application per year as recorded in self-administered logs was compared with recalled values. Results: It was found that participants underestimated the duration and frequency of actual pesticide use. High correlations were found between self-reported values and observed values, as well as between recalled values and recorded values. Conclusions: The reason might be that farmers unconsciously under-recall the application of pesticide since many customers prefer eco-friendly agricultural products. Farmers thought the task of applying pesticides to be essential, and this may explain why the participants in this study tended to accurately recall their pesticide-related work.
