Vol.39 No.3
Objective: This study aims to review the ergonomic literature about the musculoskeletal problems in fishing, and to suggest directions of further studies. Background: Until the 1960s, fishing was one of the dominant industries in the economy of Korea, but nowadays it is of little importance. However, the fishing industry should be sustained and the health of the people involved in the industry should be maintained and enhanced. Method: The peer-reviewed articles from international and domestic academic journals published after year 2000 were searched using Web of Science, Google Scholar, DBPia and KISS. The literature was searched by the keywords of "fishing", "fishery", "fishermen", "musculoskeletal", "ergonomic", "occupational", "injury", "health", and their combinations. Results: 20 international articles were analyzed. They could be classified into the descriptive studies on problem identification (8 articles, 40%), biomechanical or quantitative studies (4 articles, 20%), studies on the musculoskeletal symptoms (4 articles, 20%), development of intervention (2 articles, 10%), and literature review (2 articles, 10%) Only 2 domestic articles were found. Conclusion: It was confirmed that the musculoskeletal problems in fishing are prevalent and severe. More studies are expected on the ergonomic design of fishing vessels and machines/tools used in fishing work. Application: The results will be applied to guide the direction of further ergonomic research to lead the development of fishing industry.
Vol.27 No.4
The aim of this paper is to improve the design of a pair of axilla crutches through quality function deployment(QFD) and discomfort experiments. User needs for the crutches, as well as the engineering characteristics which have influence on the ergonomic quality of crutches were determined from the interview with many users. This information was entered in the house of quality, and the results show that the axillary pad and grip are the most important quality factors. And the results from the discomfort experiments confirmed the QFD output. A prototype reflecting the QFD results was proposed. The present study demonstrated how QFD approach can be a methodological tool geared to greater ergonomics consideration in product design.

Objective: To develop a BARAW (By Avoiding Repetitive motions, Awkward postures and Weights) tool which can be applied to assess and improve the musculoskeletal discomfort and pain associated with nursing service workers. Background: Most of existing MSDs assessment tools were developed to investigate the repetitive works commonly found in manufacturing industry. A new approach is needed to assess such non-repetitive works as those done by nurses. Method: As the first step of developing BARAW tools, we investigated the existing assessment tools and guidelines for nurses. And then, BARAW tools were developed based on the results of the expert interview. Based on FGI (Focus group interview) and literature review, a questionnaire was developed to investigate the causes of the musculoskeletal discomfort and pain. Reliability of the questionnaire was tested. Results: The procedure of using the BARAW tool is as follows; 1) finding the cause of discomfort and pain 2) finding possible interventions, 3) implementation of the interventions, 4) evaluation of BARAW’s effectiveness, 5) feedback. Very high reliabilities were obtained from the test. Conclusion: It was shown that BARAW tool developed in this research is a readily applicable to the works of nurses. Application: BARAW tool could be extended to other non-repetitive works.

Unlike production line works, construction work is non-repetitive in nature. In this study, a checklist was developed to characterize the ergonomic hazards of construction work. Eight existing checklists including OWAS, RULA, and REBA were integrated, and a new version was designed to include more postures of lower extremities. The analysis results obtained using the new checklist showed that manual materials handling (MMH) is the most common risk factor. About 62% of the MMH was done below the knee level or above the elbow level, and 22% was carried out with the trunk twisted more than 60°. The next risk factors were the works done with the knee bent or squatted, or with the shoulders abducted. It can be concluded that the new checklist is successful as a quick and easy tool for screening risk factors of construction works, although it is not capable of determining action levels. Further studies on validation of the checklist are expected.
Vol.37 No.2
Objective: This study aims to identify the past and current situations through literature review on how Big Data is utilized in the medical field, and to suggest ergonomic implications and directions of big data technology in the medical field in the future. Background: As the investment on the medical treatment and medical service is expanded and the amount of medical information is increased due to introduction of electronic medical records, utilization of Big Data technology in medical field is increasing. Method: The articles from academic journals, conference proceedings, and professional publications published after year 2000 were searched using such data bases as DBPia. The literature to be studied was searched by keywords of "medical", "health", "healthcare", "big data", "medical data", and their combinations. Results: The parties using medical Big Data were classified into three ones, including the customers or patients using medical services, the medical institutions providing medical services, and the national or public institutions. In addition, we classified personal information problems, which all three parties should consider in common. Conclusion: Customers, medical institutions, national or public institutions can benefit from the use of medical Big Data in making various decisions. It is also necessary to take measures to solve the problem of leakage of personal information by using Medical Big Data. Application: It will be applied to guide the direction of research to safeguard personal information safely while valuing the Big Data that will lead the development of medical field.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are recognized as leading causes of significant human suffering, loss of productivity, and economic burdens on our society. WMSDs are associated with work patterns that include fixed or constrained body positions, continual repetition of movements, force concentrated on small parts of the body, cold environment and vibration. Main effort to protect workers from WMSDs should focus on avoiding repetitive patterns of work through engineering controls which may include mechanization, ergonomic design of tools and equipment, and workplace layout. Where elimination of the risk factors is not practical, administrative controls involving job rotation, job enlargement and enrichment, teamwork should be considered.
Vol.28 No.4
The objective of this paper is to compare two national guidelines on the VDT work management published by Ministry of Labor(MOL) and Korean Standard(KS), and suggest possible modifications of them. The scope of this paper was limited to the desktop type of VDT jobs, excluding laptop environment. In addition, questionnaires were administered to office workers to collect information on the discomfort levels in meeting the MOL Notification. From ergonomic point of view, the most noticeable differences between two guidelines were found with respect to the heights of chairs and desks. In fact, the ranges specified in each guideline were not the same. In the field surveys, it could be known that work environments should be improved.
