A Case Study
유재준 순천향대학교 사회과학연구소 2004 순천향 사회과학연구 Vol.10 No.1
The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) has proposed the construction of company towns as a means to boost Korea's investment inflow, create jobs, sustain industrial competitiveness, incubate future-growth engines, and contribute to a more balanced national development. The key concept of a company town is industry. Ideally, the company town should also include infrastructure (e.g. R&D centers), distribution systems, housing, education, medical institutions and cultural facilities. In particular, it is essential that the location chosen should incorporate some geographical advantage to increase industrial competitiveness, thereby bringing added synergies by inviting companies and research centers to such a location. In short, a company town should be an industrial hub surrounded by a residential-friendly environment. In its effort to establish a company town in Korea, FKI visited several company towns worldwide for the purpose of benchmarking their key success factors: Toyota City, Japan (March 24~27) and Kista Science City, Oulu City, Sophia Antipolis City, Europe (May 2~8). Common characteristics of company town success stories are summarized as follows: First, strong leadership demonstrated by developing parties, whether it be the company itself, related university, local government or the central government; each play vital role in the success of the company town. Second, close connections with universities are important in obtaining high-quality labor. Third, close networking between related companies is a key factor in establishing competitiveness, thereby enabling it to reach a full degree of self-sufficiency. Fourth, the local government has an important role in developing the company town's infrastructure. Fifth, each company town began its project with a competitive advantage. Lastly, these cities had reached a global standard of decentralization, high living conditions, an open culture and held a long-term strategy that encompasses 30 years or more, before they were successful.
Electronic Structure and Insulating Nature of the (LaTiO3)2/(LaAlO3)2 Superlattice
유재준,한명준 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.53 No.2
To understand the electronic structure and the role of electron correlations in a new-type Mott- insulator/band-insulator superlettice, LaTiO3/LaAlO3, we carried out first-principles calculations based on the density funcational theory within a local density approximation plus U method. In contrast to other superlattices like LaTiO3/SrTiO3 and LaAlO3/SrTiO3, the ground state elec- tronic structure of LaTiO3/LaAlO3 was found to be insulating, which was attributed to the on-site Coulomb interactions in Ti 3d-states and to the absence of polarity discontinuity. Although the lattice relxation tended to enhance the band gap, it did not affect the main features of the electronic structures and magnetic moments. A detailed analysis revealed that the electronic structure of the (LaTiO3)2/(LaAlO3)2 superlattice was close to a superposition of two bulk electronic states. In particular, the Ti 3d valence state maintained its Mott insulating character regardless of the lattice relaxation.
