오종갑 한국어문학회 2003 語文學 Vol.0 No.82
This study was designed to ① divide the dialects of fishing villages in four regions on the East Coast - Yeongdeok, Uljin, Samcheok, and Gangneung - by comparing their phonological aspects and ② identify the differences between the dialects of fishing villages and those of farming villages, as well as figure out what caused differences. The research led to the following conclusions: (l) There are 20 consonants - p, p', p^(h), m, t, t', t^(h), s, s', n, r, t∫, t∫', t∫^(h), k, k', k^(h), ŋ, h, ? - in the dialects of fishing villages in Uljin, Samcheok, and Gangneung, and 19 consonants in Yeongdeok, excluding "s" from the above 20. (2) Yeongdeok, Uljin, Samcheok dialects have 6 simple vowels - i, E, ??, a, u, o - and Gangneung dialect has 10 simple vowels - i, e, ε, u^(‥), o^(‥), i, ??, a, u, o. Among y-diphthongs, yE, y??, ya, yu, yo were found in Yeongdeok, Uljin, and Samcheok and ye, y??, yo, y??, ya, yu, yo were found in Gangneung. Among w-diphthongs, Yeongdeok and Uljin have wi, wE, w??, wa, Samcheok has wE, w??, wa, and Gangneung has wE, W??, we, wa. (3) A total of 25 phonological rules have been found in the dialects of the fishing villages in these four regions. However, Yeongdeok dialect does not have the labialization rule and the rounding rule. In addition, the aspiration rule and the y-gliding rule are applied to declension and conjugation in Gangneung, whereas they are applied to conjugation alone in the other three regions. The rest of the rules are all present in the dialects of fishing villages in these four regions, but the degree of application differs. (4) Dialects of the farming villages in Yeongdeok, Uljin, Samcheok and Gangneung can be divided into two: Yeongdeok . U1jin group and Sarncheo koGangneung group, whereas dialects of the fishing villages can be divided into Yeongdeok . Uljin, Samcheok group and Gangneung group. (5) The differences in the phonological system between the dialects of farming villages and fishing villages in Yeongdeok, U1jin, Sarncheok, and Gangneung lie in whether the following cases take place or not: the contrast of s and s'; uy and oy being changed into simple vowels; the mergence of ε and e, and ?? and i; and the presence of iy. The discrepancies in the timing of embracing innovation waves are deemed to be the reason behind these differences.

] This study was designed to find ①what phonological rules had existed by looking into the historical changes of adverbial ending '-aX' and ②what the spread course of each rule had been by comparing its application percentages by province groups. As a result, the following conclusions were reached.
