        The much-studied phenomenon of English to contraction which permits the invinitival to to be adjoined to a few verbs like want, yielding forms like wanna began to be used as a material for justifying the trace theory of transformantional-generative grammar in the mid-1970s. The behavior of want when followed by an infinitive has become the prime example of 'trace theory' as developed by Chomsky and Lasnik (1978), which accounts for the grammaticality of I wanna go as against the ungrammaticaliyt of * You I wanna go. The mechanism is a 'trace' left behind when the subject of the infinitive is moved out, which blocks the contraciton of want to to wanna. Postal and Pullum (1978), on the contrary, claim to have shown difficulties of a fundamental nature in all analyses of to contraction within the framework of the ecstnded standard theory (EST) and trace theory. They conclude that there is good reason to belivev that the failures of trace theroy analyses of to contaction are rooted in a basic inadequacy of EST assumption about grammar. Why, then, is it that there has been considerable controversy over to contraction, a problem which may be considered trivial? The reason for it is that the controversy is not a minor problem related with how to deal with to contraction, but in one sense an important issue related with success or failure of the 'Government-Binding Theory' (GB-theory) in that almost all the mechanisms of the GB-theory are directly or indirectly relevant to to contraciton phenomena. This paper aims at providing a condition on wanna-contracgtion in favor of the GB-theory by examining the ways in which empty categories operate on wanna-contraction phenomena. I wil show that a government condition on wanna-contraction does not merely supplement a 'visibility' account (see Jaeggli (1980), Aoun and Lightfoot (1984) but in fact replace it, since in all constructions where a Case-marked trace is involved, the structure is such that the government condition does not hold. In conclusion, I'll argue that a government relation between want and to can be a sufficient condition to account for all other facts about the distribution of wanna.

        Nonnative EFL Leaners' Motivation for Collaborative Learning in CMC

        This study is designed to help to understand the Korean EFL teachers' experiences of computer-mediated communication(CMC) focused on the topics of collaborative computer-mediated interaction. With respect to one of the major conditions for collaborative learning, we should recognize that it occurs when the communicators actively and willingly cooperate based on strong motivation. Moreover, we should understand how the both sides help each other to achieve collaborative communication in the target language. Therefore, this study explores what the participants' motivation for collaborative experiences is like, how native/nonnative speakers perceive these motivation, what the main factors interfering with nonnative speakers’ collaborative learning are, and how the both sides endeavor to enhance more desirable environment for collaborative interaction.

        "Until"-구문에 대한 해석

        The purpose of this paper is to seek an adequate interpretation of until-construction against the two existing analyses (one is "double-until analysis," the other is "durative analysis"). I attempt to provide an alternative analysis, in which there is only one kind of until. I will show that a unified treatment of until is available, once it is recognized that this item is a kind of ordering operator. Of course it is inevitable that there is a difference of interpretations of until-constructions, depending on whether the until is used with a positive verb or with a negative verb. Until is analyzed as a binary operator which orders its arguments, A and B, but at the same time I refer to the cases in which argument A or not-A may be cancelled. The primary idea in this analysis is that the presence of until refers to the endpoint of an eventuality and implies a reversal of the eventuality at that point. The hypothesis for an adequate analysis of until hinges on the following two-fold claim: the until with a positive verb (usually durative verbs) generally represents the `stopping of argument A` at the switching point, plus the possible implicature of the `duration of argument A,` whereas the until with a negative verb (usually punctual verbs) usually represents `the beginning of argument A` at the switching point, plus the possible implicature of the `duration of not-A.`

        Usage of the discourse particle like in American movie scripts

        The purpose of this research is to provide the data for the clarification of the functions of discourse particle like. 46 instances of utterances were found from 20 movie scripts that have been released for the last 30 years. Revising the previous proposals, we will argue that they can be grouped as "quotative", "approximation", "focus or introduction" and "filler or hedge". The data, however, show the intra/inter-function overlappings, which need an elaborated network to explain the complicated meanings.

        Motivational Change in Learning English as a Foreign Language: A Korean Case Study

        The purpose of this study is to extend the theoretical knowledge of intricate L2 motivation by investigating its tendency to fluctuate with time. This study would contribute to developing a dynamic nature of L2 motivation by exploring how motivation evolves with time in individual learners’ learning processes. In the practical perspective, this study would lead L2 classroom practitioners to a better understanding of the tendency of motivation to shift moment by moment and provide pedagogical insights into ways to stimulate their learners’ motivation and prevent its decline or loss in L2.

        승모판 재건술 후 발생한 용혈빈혈 1예

        Hemolytic anemia is one of the findings representative of prosthesis dysfunction after valve surgery. A 67-year-old man, who underwent mitral annular ring plasty one week ago, was admitted with shortness of breath and fatigue. Hematological studies revealed a Coombs’-negative hemolytic anemia with a hemoglobin 7.9 g/dl, hematocrit of 17.1%, haptoglobin of 1.0 mg/dl, LDH 5148 U/L, total bilirubin of 3.1 mg/dl (direct of 0.71 mg/dl), and a peripheral blood smear demonstrating mechanical hemolysis with red cell fragmentation. Transesophageal echocardiogram revealed a turbulent jet of mitral regurgitation hitting the annuloplasty ring. The patient returned to the operating room for mitral valve replacement, and thereafter which the hemolytic anemia resolved.
