It is generally accepted that measurment of the motor nerve conduction velocity is a valuable method in evaluation of peripheral neuropathy including entrapment syndrome and the differential diagnosis between neuropathic diseases that primarily affect the nerve axon, the anterior horn cell and muscular diseases. The femoral nerve is the largest branch of the lumbar plexus and the major motor branches innervate the quadriceps femoris muscle. The femoral nenropathy caused by compression not a common syndrome. The compression was intraabdominal, either in the retroperitoneal region or in the course of the nerve through the psoas major muscle, and extraabdominally by the inflamed lymph nodes. The diagnosis is usually based on clinical symptomes. This study is to establish the normal values of femoral nerve conduction velocity for the objective diagnostic aid. In this study, 140 nerves were measured bilaterally in 70 healthy subjects, 17 males and 23 females, ranging in age from 15 to 59 years old. The femoral nerve was stimulated in the femoral triangle lateral to the femoral artery, below the inguinal ligament by bipolar subcutaneous surface electrode. The recording surface electrode was placed over vastus medialis 14cm as proximal, and 28cm as distal pick up distally from stimulation cathode. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The mean conduction velocity of femoral nerve is 62. 64±7.6 M/sec. 2. The mean value of the latency to the proximal pick up is 2.73±0.39 msec, 5.01±0.52 msec to the distal pick up. 3. The mean amplitude of the actional potential in proximal pick up was 9.02±2.98 mV, 10.51±291 mV in distal pick up. 4. The mean duration of proximal action potential was 24.66±3.90 msec, 24.03±3.33msec on distal action potential. 5. No statistical variation is noticed with advancing age in conduction velocity, latency, amplitude and duration of the evoked action potential. 6. There is no significant differences related to the side of the extremities examined. 7. There is no differences in the conduction velocity, latency and duration of the action potential to the sex.
