This study was undertaken to define the effect of DaeSiHoTang on the norepinephrine-induced arterial contraction and the mechanism of DaeSiHoTang induced relaxation. In order to investigate the effect of DaeSiHoTang on contracted rabbit carotid Arterial strips, transverse strips with intact or damaged endothelium were used for the experiment using organ bath. To analyzed the mechanism of DaeSiHoTang-induced relaxation. DaeSiHoTang extract infused into contracted arterial strips induced by norepinephrine after treatment of indomethacin, N_(ω)-nitro-L-arginine, or tetraethylammonium chloride. DaeSiHoTang relax arterial strip with endothelium contracted by norepinephrine, but in the strips without endothelium, DaeSiHoTang-induced relaxation was significantly inhibited. The endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by DaeSiHoTang was decreased by the pretreatment of N_(ω)-nitro-L-arginine, but it was not observed in the strips pretreated with indomethacin or tetraethylammonium chloride. We suggest that DaeSiHoTang may directly suppress influx of extra-cellular Ca^(++) and indirectly suppress influx of extra-cellular Ca^(++) through the formation of nitric oxide in the vascular endothelial cells.

Sixteen kinds of piercing-sucking mouth type insects were observed at witches`-broom diseased paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa) trees. Among ten insect species tested, a leafhopper, Empoasca sp., transmitted paulownia witches`-broom mycoplasma-like organism(PWB-MLO) to periwinkle(Catharanthus noseus) plant. Adults of this leafhopper were collected from PWB-diseased paulownia trees. The leafhpoppers were allowed to feed on the PWB-infected paulownia trees for three weeks to acquire PWB-MLO. These insects were then transferred to healthy seedlings of paulownia and periwinkle plants for inoculation-feeding. About 30-40days after the inoculation, $quot;little-leaf$quot; symptoms developed on periwinkle plants, but no symptoms developed on paulownia seedlings. MLO infection in the diseased periwinkle tissue was diagnosed by fluorescence microscopy. MLOs were observed in the sieve tubes by electron microscopy, proving the insect transmission of PWB-MLO.

Three isoflavones and one isoflavanone were isolated from the wood of Sophora japonica (Leguminosae) which has been selected due to its high antifungal activity among the tested species. Four compounds were identified as 5,7-dihydroxy-4',6-dimethoxyisoflavone (irisolidone), 5,7-dihydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone (biochanin A), 7-hydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone (formononetin) and 7-hydroxy-4'-methoxy- isoflavanone by Mass and NMR spectroscopic analysis. The antifungal activity of the isoflavonoids was tested by medium dilution method and showed low antifungal activity indicating that the other compounds may contribute to high activity of the wood extractives of S japonica.

The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata (Say), attacking a sycamore tree, Platatanus orientalis L., was first found in Korea, and was widely distributed in the central part of the country. The adult was milky white in color and 3.0-3.2 mm long, and the matured nymph was black. Heavily infested trees appear yellowish white as a result of feeding by the nymphs on the under surface of leaves.
