“Reading as Re-Translating”: The Scandals of Translation in Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictée
신나미 한국외국어대학교 영미연구소 2018 영미연구 Vol.44 No.-
Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s experimental text, Dictée, is a text that asks us to engage with problems of translation. Major criticism has particularly focused on how the text introduces sites of translation in the form of dictation and translation exercises. Moments of dictation and translation appearing in Dictée invite critical reflection upon the asymmetries of power relations informing processes of language learning and immigration. This essay examines how Cha’s writing in Dictée enlarges notions of translation by bringing attention to varied forms of interpretation and mediation that emerge in the context of Korea’s colonial and postcolonial condition. Drawing upon the insights of Venuti’s discussion of translation as a cultural practice that is informed by the asymmetries of power, this essay argues that Dictée calls for critical engagement with the Korean colonial and postcolonial condition by pointing to the failures of translation shaped by the legacies of various cultural and political forces. Far from being limiting and thus failing, the gaps and holes of translation in Cha’s writing not only speak to the scandals of translation, but also call for acts of re-translation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN)-led self-management program on cardiovascular health status among Korean women at risk of developing or progressing cardiovascular disease. Methods: This pilot study used one-group pre- and post- test experimental design. At health fairs in a community, 30 women who had one or more risk factors for metabolic syndrome were recruited and agreed to participate in the study. A total of 25 women completed the study. The intervention consisted of weekly follow-up calls and self-monitoring diary after an hour of individual counseling regarding risk factors, fast walking, and healthy diet tailored to the participants’ needs. Physical activity was assessed with the World Health Organization International Physical Activity Questionnaire and a pedometer. Results: Participants showed statistically significant improvements in blood pressure, body mass index, levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein, numbers of metabolic syndrome factors, and the 10-year CV risk estimate after one month of concentrated intervention. In addition, their physical activity behavior significantly improved after the intervention. Conclusion: This APN-led self-management program targeting modifiable risk factors by offering tailored counseling and concentrated support during the transition might be effective in preventing progression to the cardiovascular disease.
Self-portrait of Obese and Overweight Korean Women based on Lifetime Phase
신나미,박은영,최지원,박영주,정선영 한국성인간호학회 2016 성인간호학회지 Vol.28 No.6
Purpose: This study investigated Korean women in between age 30 to 60 who were obese or overweight in orderto explore their self-perception based on lifetime phase. Methods: Focus group interviews were performed fourtimes with six to eight participants in each group (a total of 27). Data were analyzed using inductive thematicanalysis. Results: The data analysis from the interviews revealed recurring common themes: heavy heart, heavybody, resigned acceptance of their own condition, and compromise. The study also found that each age grouphad different concerns: concerning others' gaze on their obese appearances (30s), realizing their aging obeseappearances (40s), recognizing red flags of their health with obesity (50s), and becoming ambivalent about theirobese appearances (60s). Overall, their perceptions of being overweight were negative and stressful. Womenin their 30s and 40s were more interested in their appearances, and thus were more obsessive about weight gain. In contrast, women in their 50s and 60s were more accepting of their physical appearances, and thus were moreconcerned about living healthy than losing weight. Conclusion: These results may be useful to consider when developingtailored weight-control programs for obese and overweight Korean women. Additionally, strategic approachesfor successful and effective programs targeting healthy weight should be based on better understandingabout women’s self-perceptions and motivations.
Effects of diagnostic tests on classroom teaching and learning.
신나미,신상근 한국응용언어학회 2010 응용 언어학 Vol.26 No.3
The claim that diagnostic testing can improve language teaching and learning is not new, but there is very little work on the usefulness of this important instructional tool. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods, this study examined whether classroom diagnostic tests could provide critical information for the teacher and the students that could make classroom teaching and learning more effective. The results showed that the use of diagnostic tests had a beneficial effect on teaching and learning. The teacher’s time allotment in the experimental group was determined by the number of the students who were already familiar with course objectives. The tests also had a positive effect on the students’ achievement. Implications of the findings are discussed. information for the teacher and the students that could make classroom teaching and learning more effective. Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost centers on solving the case of Sailor. Set in the midst of the Sri Lankan war, the novel features Anil Tissera, a Sri Lankan born forensic specialist who works for an international human rights organization based in Geneva, coming across an unidentified skeleton while conducting research in her native place. Suspecting the skeleton to be a victim of government violence, Anil commits herself to the recuperation of the skeleton’s identity. The investigation leads to an unexpected collaboration with two local male figures, Sarath, an archeologist affiliated with the Sri Lankan government, and Ananda, a former artisan who currently works as a gem-pit worker. The process of solving Sailor’s case gives rise to a structure of feeling that radically transforms their relationship. Three strangers who differ in nationality, gender, profession, and even language come to feel deeply drawn to each other. Attending to the novel’s interest in tracing a model of burgeoning friendship connecting three strangers, this essay examines how feelings of intimacy explored in the form of friendship in Anil’s Ghost departing from its common association with the private and familial to gain social and political meaning in the Sri Lankan civil war context. By focusing on intimacy’s communal dimension and transformative powers, this essay argues that the novel’s exploration of friendship as a model of affective community, not only critically responding to the Sri Lankan civil war’s conflict and violence, gives shape to a flexible social imagination that embraces the tensions and risks of difference.
