The feeding habits of Chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were investigated using 329 specimens collected from coastal waters of the South Sea of Korea. S. japonicus is mainly a piscivore, consuming small fish such as Engraulis japonicus (%RI: 81.0 %). The diet of Chub mackerel also includes small quantities of thaliaceans, euphausiids, and amphipods. We calculated the trophic level as 3.92 for S. japonicus. The dietary composition of S. japonicus did not show significant differences with size, but differed with season. As the body size of S. japonicus increased, the mean weight of prey within the stomach (mW/ST) increased (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

Diet composition and trophic level of Trachurus japonicus were studied using 417 specimens collected by trawls, set nets and purse seine fisheries from March 2019 to February 2020 in the South Sea of Korea. The size of T. Japonicus ranged from 7.0 to 49.8 cm in total length. T. japonicus were a carnivore that fed mainly on euphausiids and pisces. In eddition, T. japonicus fed on small quantities of cephalopods, crabs etc. T. japonicus showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. The proportion of euphausiids decreased inversely proportional to body size whereas the consumption of pisces gradually increased. As body size of T. japonicus increased the mean number of prey per stomach and the mean weight of prey per stomach tended to increase, but the mean number of prey per stomach was not significantly different. As a result of the feeding strategy analysis, T. japonicus were specialized feeders with pisces and euphausiids as their dominant prey. The trophic level ranged between 3.57 ± 0.54 and 3.91 ± 0.65, and increased asymptotically with size of specimens. The average trophic level of the T. japonicus was 3.79 ± 0.61.

The diet composition of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius, was investigated using 853 specimens collect-ed using two-boat trawl, stow net, gill net and set net from January to December 2019 from the South Sea of Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 25.2 to 114.8 cm in fork length. S. niphonius fed mostly on fishes. Its diets also included small quantities of shrimps, cephalopods, crabs, stomatopods, etc. Among them, Engraulis japonicus was the dominant species. The dietary composition of S. niphonius exhibited significant differences based on their size. The proportion of Trichiurus japonicus increased as body size of S. niphonius increased, whereas the proportion of E. japonicus decreased gradually. As the body size of S. niphonius increased, the mean weight of prey per the stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase significantly (one-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

The diet composition of skinnycheek lanternfish, Benthosema pterotum were collected by bottom trawl net in the South Sea of Korea during 2021 (February, May, August, and November) and 2022 (February, April, August, and November). The size of the specimens ranged from 16 to 73 mm in total length. B. pterotum were mesopelagic carnivores that mainly consumed euphausiids and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of amphipods, shrimps, mysids, etc. We calculated the trophic level as 3.16 for B. pterotum. The individuals of small size class (<40 mm) fed mainly on copepods. In the next size classes (40~45 mm, 45~50 mm, 50~55 mm), copepods’ proportion decreased and euphausiids increased. In the largest class (55~60 mm and ≥60 mm), the proportion of euphausiids’ decreased, and shrimps increased. As the body size of B. pterotum increased the mean weight of prey per stomach (mW/ST) tended to significantly increase (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05).
