        N/A Objectives: For the evaluation of cardiopulmonary endurance, treadmill (TM) and bicycle ergometer (EG) are the most commonly used modes of exercise testing, and the results obtained by these two modes are known to be different. However, it is still controversial that which parameters are how much different. The purpose of our study is to compare two modes of testing in healthy subjects. Methods: Sixty-nine healthy subjects consisting of 34 males and 35 females participated in the study. All the subjects underwent symptom-limited maximal exercise tests by both TM and EG modes at an interval of less than seven days. The TM tests were done by Bruce protocol in both genders, and in the EG tests, work load was increased by 25 watts once every minute for males and 15 watts for females. Results: The maximal heart rate, oxygen uptake and oxygen pulse (HR max, VO2 max & O2 pulse max) by the TM mode of testing were significantly greater than those by the EG mode in both genders, particularly in females. The differences in HR max were approximately 7% and 9% in males and females, respectively, whereas those in VO2 max and O2 pulse max were 11-25%. The VO2, max by TM and EG modes showed highly significant correlation. At maximal exercise, the minute ventilation was significantly different between the two modes, and VE by the TM mode was approximately 15% and 22% greater than by the EG mode in males ad females, respectively. Among variables reflecting ventilatory reserves at maximal exercise, the ratio of VE. max to maximal voluntary ventilotion (MVV) in ;he TM mode was approximately 15% and 22% greater in males and females, repectively. The breathing reserve (MVV-VE max) in the EG mode was approximately 79% and 147% greater in males and females, repectively. The results of these two variables, VE max/MVV and MUV-VE max, are explained by the more marked increase in VE max by the TM mode and denote that the ventilatory reserve capacity at maximal exercise is greater in the EG mode. Conclusion: Our study reveals that the TM mode of maximal exercise testing induces more pronounced cardiopulmonary responses than the EG mode, particularly in females. And this is well manifested by the facts that VO2 max, O2. pulse max and VE- max obtained by the TM mode of testings are 10% or more than those by the EG mode. The HR max by the TM mode was also greater than that by the EG mode in both genders, but its difference was less than 10%.

      • 칼슘 통로 봉쇄제가 Pilocarpine에 의한 경련 및 기억장애에 미치는 영향

        목적 : 칼슘 통로 봉쇄제인 nifedipine과 flunarizine이 pilocarpine으로 유발된 경련의 발생과 뇌 조직 손상으로 인한 기억력 저하에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 연구하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : ICR계의 생쥐 수컷을 사용하여 pilocarpone 투여후 6단계로 나누어 경련발작을 관찰하였으며, nifedipine과 flunarizine 전처치후 pilocarpine 투여에 따른 항경련작용을 측정하였다. Working memory를 통하여 기억력검사를 실시하였다. 결과 : nifedipine과 flunarigine 두 약물은 모두 경련 강도를 감소시켰고 flunarizine은 경련 시작 시간도 지연시켜 항경련 작용이 있음을 보였다. 칼슘 통로 봉쇄제는 주로 3일에서 10일 사이에 투여한 경우에 pilocarpine에 의해 기억력이 저하되는 것을 억제하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론 : 이상의 실험 결과에서 칼슘 통로 봉쇄제는 pilocarpine에 의한 경련 억제 작용과 기억력 저하를 억제할 수 있는 작용을 가지고 있음을 확인하였다. The effect of calcium channel blockers, nifedipine and flunarizine, on the pilocarpine-induced seizure and neuronal damage-induced memory deficit in mice was studied. After pretreatment of nifedipine or flunarizine, pilocarpine was administered intraperitoneally. Both drugs attenuated behavioral seizure activity and delayed onset of seizure activity. Memory was tested with working memory version of Morris water mazein 20 days following pilocarpine treatment and showed memory deficit. This deficit in memory was prevented when nifedipine or flunarizine were given during 3 to 6 day or 7 to 10 days after pilocarpine treatment. These results show that calcium channel blockers have anticonvulsant property and depress on pilocarpine-induced memory deficit.

        Extracellular phospholipase A_2(PLA_2) is known to be secreted by the mononucleocytes, granulocytes, platelet, and chondrocytes in the joint, and it is also reported that this enzyme is increased in inflammatory conditions, such as acute panceratitis, sepsis, ARDS and arthritis. It was proposed that the extracellular release of phospholipase A_2 in response to inflammatory stimuli might represent an amplification mechanism for the generation of high levels of lipid mediators such as eicosanoids. To establish the normal value of PLA_2 in the healthy individuals we measured extracellular PLAz of healthy individuals of 84 males and 85 females in their serum and urine. The levels of PLA_2 activity in serum were 170.85±79.92 (U/㎖) in under 29 years old (20 males), 160.68±109.61 in 30 to 39 years old (19 males), 226.58±130.47 in 40 to 49 years old (19 males), 231.10±82.32 in 50 to 59 years old(17 males), 228.21±102.46 in over 60 years old(6 males), 168.21±62.11(U/㎖) in under 29 years old(6 females), 125.85±101.64 in 30 to 39 years old(20 females), 86.70±31.03 in 40 to 49 years old(20 females), 79.00±35.51 in 50 to 59 years old(20 females), 104.74±46.97 in over 60 years old(19 females). The levels of PLA_2 activity in urine were 142.61±141.86(U/㎖) in under 29 years old(18 males), 377.85±273.01 in 30 to 39 years old(20 males), 406.16±318.07 in 40 to 49 years old(19 males), 84.34±56.12(U/㎖) in under 29 years old(6 females), 17.20±9.94 in 30 to 39 years old(15 females), 54.98±86.24 in 40 to 49 years old(15 females), 14.78±11.38 in 50 to 59 years old(18 females), 43.00±40.29 in over 60 years old(19 females).
